Norwegian Olympic Ski Cross Medalist Audun Groenvold Dies After Being Struck by Lightning
Groenvold won bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games. 'It is with great sadness that we have received the news of Audun Groenvold's untimely passing,' the federation said. The former national Alpine skier and ski cross athlete was recently struck by lightning during a cabin trip.
The federation said Groenvold was quickly taken to hospital and received treatment for the injuries he sustained in the lightning strike and then died Tuesday night.
Groenvold was a member of Norway's Alpine skiing team before he moved into freestyle and ski cross. He had one podium finish as a World Cup Alpine skier, finishing third in a downhill in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999. He also won a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships and the overall ski cross cup in 2007.
After his career ended, he became a national team coach and a TV commentator. 'Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure who has meant so much to both the Alpine and freestyle communities,' federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug said, adding that his passing creates a huge void.

Hornets center James Banks III was ejected with 3:47 left in the third quarter after picking up a flagrant-two foul for an elbow to Sacramento center Dylan Cardwell's face. Cardwell went down hard and remained on the floor during most of the video review.

LAS VEGAS: Mario Barrios held off a battling Manny Pacquiao to retain his WBC world welterweight crown with a fight ruled a majority draw on Saturday. Barrios, 30, held onto his belt despite being dominated for several rounds by 46-year-old Filipino icon Pacquiao, returning to the ring for the first time after a four-year retirement. Barrios was awarded the fight 115-113 by one judge, with the other two cards scoring it 114-114. The result drew a subdued reaction from the MGM Grand Garden Arena crowd, who had roared on Pacquiao as he attempted to make a spectacular return to boxing. At times, it seemed as if Pacquiao was poised to write another improbable chapter in his 30-year professional career as he used all of his guile and experience to frustrate Barrios. But Barrios rallied furiously over the final three rounds – he was deemed the winner of those rounds on all three cards – to do just enough to force a result that sees him retain his title. 'I thought I won the fight,' Pacquiao said afterwards. 'I mean, it was a close fight. My opponent was very tough. But it was a wonderful fight. 'I was trying to find a way to finish the fight but my opponent was so tough. He threw punches in combination and with defense, so it was hard.' Barrios, meanwhile, felt he had done enough to deserve the draw. 'I thought I pulled it out,' Barrios said. 'But I still tip my hat to Manny. It was an honor to share the ring with him, somebody with so much experience who has accomplished so much in this sport. We left everything in the ring, nothing but love and respect.' Barrios admitted he had been awed by Pacquiao's remarkable reserves of energy and stamina. 'That's crazy – his stamina, he can still crack and he's still strong as hell. His timing, his rhythm, everything. He was still a very awkward fighter to figure out.'

Raiders place dt christian wilkins on pup list as he still recovers from broken foot
The Las Vegas Raiders placed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who experienced a significant setback earlier this year in his recovery from a broken foot, on the physically unable to perform list Friday. That means Wilkins will miss at least the beginning of training camp, which opens Wednesday. Because he was placed on the PUP list before practices began, the Raiders can activate Wilkins at any time during camp once medically cleared. Wilkins suffered the season-ending injury in Week 5 last season. He then experienced some sort of setback in his recovery, which caused him to miss all of organized team activities and minicamp. 'It's been a difficult recovery, and he's done everything he needs to do,' coach Pete Carroll said in May. 'He's been here every day. He's here early working hard. He's not ready to get back out. We're in the midst of a long challenging process.' Wilkins, 29, was the Raiders marquee free-agent signing last year, agreeing to a four-year, 110 million contract with 82.75 million guaranteed. He was expected to bolster a defensive line led by pass rushers Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce after making a career-high nine sacks in 2023 with Miami to go with his elite run-stopping ability. All three linemen, however, suffered season-ending injuries. Wilkins had two sacks and 17 tackles in five games before injuring his foot, which required surgery. He suffered a Jones fracture – a break of the bone that connects the pinkie toe to the base of the foot.
