Bodies of six family members found in rear seat, believed to have tried escaping
All the victims were taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Setar for post-mortem examination.
JITRA – Six family members, including a baby, who were found dead, are believed to have attempted to escape from their car after it plunged into Sungai Korok here, but were unsuccessful.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Zone 1 Chief, Senior Fire Superintendent I Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said all the victims were found huddled together in the rear seat of a Proton Saga, which was submerged at the bottom of the river.
According to him, the rescue team found all victims on the left rear side of the car. Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Zone 1 Chief, Senior Fire Superintendent I Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said all the victims were found huddled together in the rear seat of a Proton Saga, which was submerged at the bottom of the river.
"During the rescue operation, we found all the victims in the back seat. It's possible they tried to escape but failed," he said at a press conference at the scene on Monday.
The victims have been identified as Muhammad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, his wife, Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31 and their four children – Putra Rayyan Nur Izat, 9, Hawa Adriana, 8, Anayla Huma'ira, 7 and Tuah Haidar, six months.
Aminuddin said the fire department had to break the car windows and cut through the vehicle's body to retrieve the victims.
"When bodies have been submerged for a certain period, they swell and make extraction through regular doors difficult.
"So, we had to break the rear window and cut the car structure to retrieve the victims," he said.
He added that the distance between the car and the riverbank was only about one metre, while the river was estimated to be six metres deep and approximately 7.6 metres wide.
"The operation was not too difficult because the car was already floating and could be pulled to the bank," he added.
It was reported that a couple and their four children, including a six-month-old baby, were reported missing after spending the night at a relative's house in Taman Aman since Saturday morning.
Their disappearance was noticed when they failed to return to their home in Jerlun and could not be contacted.
Azim's younger sister, Nur Adliah Shuhada said her brother and his family had come to stay at her house on Friday night as they usually did.

Sungai Korok has claimed 10 lives since 2012
KOTA BARU: The Fire and Rescue Department has recorded 13 incidents of vehicles plunging into Sungai Korok, Jitra in Kedah since 2012. Its director-general Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said the 13 incidents resulting in 10 deaths, including five children. He said the most recent case which occurred on July 7, involving the couple and their four children who tragically lost their lives was the 10th fatality since 2012. "These tools should be mounted within easy reach, such as on the driver's door or sun visor. "If stored in the glove box or boot, they may be unreachable in an emergency," he added. Woman killed after being hit by Hilux in Keningau

'Most tragic I've ever seen': Rescuer on family of 6 found in sunken car
JITRA: A rescuer described recovering the bodies of six family members — including a six-month-old baby — from a submerged car in Sungai Korok as the most heartbreaking operation of his career. "Throughout my time with the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, this is the most tragic and heartbreaking case I've ever attended. "The saddest moment was when my team and I carried the bodies of the baby and the three small children," said Mohammad Hasri Haslan, 31, a Water Rescue Team member from the Jitra Fire and Rescue station. Hasri said he was seated on top of the Proton Iswara as it was being lifted from the riverbank, overwhelmed with sorrow as the bodies were removed one by one. "The first was a young girl, followed by a six-month-old baby boy, then a young boy. The fourth was another girl, the fifth was their mother, and finally, the driver of the car — the children's father. "I have children of my own... seeing that was truly heartbreaking. The baby especially — it was devastating," he said. Hasri, who has years of experience recovering bodies from water, said nothing compared to the sorrow he felt during yesterday's operation. Still, he said, he had to remain focused on his duty despite the emotional toll. "Sungai Korok is deep — about six metres," he added. The bodies of the six — who had been reported missing early Saturday after visiting a relative in Taman Seri Aman — were found inside a Proton Iswara submerged in the river. They were identified as Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32; his wife, Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31; and their children, Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9; Hawa Adriana Nur Izzat, 8; Annayla Humaira Nur Izzat, 7; and six-month-old Tuah Haydar.
