- 13 May And Youth Today: Reflecting On Unity And National Values
Opinions on topical issues from thought leaders, columnists and editors.

The date 13 May is observed not with celebration, but with thoughtful reflection. It marks a significant moment in Malaysia's journey, one that underscores the ongoing importance of fostering understanding and unity within our diverse society.
Rather than dwelling on past divisions, 13 May should remind us all of the need to renew our commitment to the values that sustain national cohesion: mutual respect, inclusivity, and the shared principles that bind us as Malaysians.
The introduction of the Rukun Negara in 1970 remains a lasting and significant legacy. This national philosophy, based on Belief in God, Loyalty to King and Country, Upholding the Constitution, Rule of Law, and Good Behaviour and Morality, is more than just symbolism. It continues to provide a vital framework for fostering unity and a shared sense of civic responsibility. More than five decades on, these principles are as important as ever in guiding us towards a harmonious society.
A crucial question we must ask is how effectively we are helping the younger generation to internalise and uphold the ideals of the Rukun Negara. As Malaysia grows more diverse and interconnected, these guiding principles remain as relevant as ever. They provide a moral and ethical foundation that can inspire young Malaysians to work together in building a stronger, more cohesive society.
Cultivating a meaningful sense of identity and belonging
In a world where differing opinions can easily spark misunderstanding, education must go beyond mere facts. It should foster critical thinking, empathy and respect for diverse viewpoints. By encouraging young Malaysians to engage thoughtfully with national values, we help them cultivate a meaningful sense of identity and belonging.
This awareness is best nurtured through inclusive and interactive experiences. Initiatives such as intercultural dialogues, creative arts, community projects, volunteering and sports provide young people with valuable opportunities to connect across cultural lines, develop teamwork and build mutual understanding.
One shining example is the Mini Golf Charity Event organised by students at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia under the EmPOWER Programme. This initiative united participants from various backgrounds in support of EPIC Homes Malaysia, which builds homes for underserved Orang Asli communities. Through shared effort, teamwork and friendly competition, genuine bonds were forged, demonstrating unity in action far beyond words.
While national bodies such as the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of National Unity play vital roles in shaping policy, true unity is often realised in everyday settings such as classrooms, universities and community spaces where Malaysians come together, support one another and affirm their shared identity.
As we reflect on 13 May, let it renew our commitment to unity and understanding. The Rukun Negara remains a vital guide, particularly for the youth, in shaping a more harmonious Malaysia. Through inclusive education, respectful dialogue and active community engagement, we can inspire the next generation to build a future grounded in shared values and national pride.

Backbenchers Club: PM's 'extraordinary tribute' shows Madani govt's commitment to people
KUALA LUMPUR: The "extraordinary tribute" to Malaysians announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reflects the unwavering commitment of the Madani government to prioritising the welfare of the people, said the Backbenchers Club (BBC). Its chairman, Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah, said the initiatives unveiled would bring tangible benefits to Malaysians by helping to reduce the burden of living costs while simultaneously driving the nation's economic growth towards greater sustainability. "This also demonstrates the government's sensitivity to the current realities faced by the people," he said at a press conference held at the Parliament building today. Among the key initiatives announced by the Prime Minister today were a one-off RM100 cash aid for all adult citizens via their MyKad under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, which will be implemented for the first time; maintaining current toll rates; expanding Jualan Rahmah Madani; and RON95 petrol price to be lowered to RM1.99 per litre. "These proactive and swift steps prove that the government consistently listens to the people's concerns and works to find comprehensive solutions for shared well-being," Shahar said. He said the efforts are in line with the Madani Economic Framework, which aims to raise both the ceiling and floor of economic standards, as well as the government's hard work in attracting investment which is now translating into real benefits for the people. "As such, we call on all Malaysians to continue giving strong support to the Madani government to ensure Malaysia continues to progress and prosper," he said. Earlier today, Anwar also announced that Monday, Sept 15 this year, will be declared an additional public holiday in conjunction with the 2025 Malaysia Day celebration. The move, Anwar said, is aimed at recognising the spirit of unity and the significance of Malaysia's formation as a nation.

PM Anwar's welfare initiatives boost public support for Madani govt
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's latest welfare measures underscore the Madani government's commitment to easing living costs and supporting economic recovery, said Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The initiatives include a one-off RM100 cash aid for Malaysians aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, maintained RON95 petrol subsidies at RM1.99 per litre, and deferred toll rate hikes for 10 major highways. Ramanan noted the RM100 assistance, with a RM2 billion allocation, will be distributed digitally without complex eligibility checks. He added that declaring Sept 15 as an additional public holiday aims to boost domestic tourism, particularly benefiting rural economies reliant on visitor spending. The expanded Rahmah Sales Programme, backed by RM600 million, will now cover 600 state constituencies to improve access to affordable essentials. Ramanan, who is Sungai Buloh MP, emphasised the government's data-driven approach in balancing public needs with fiscal responsibility. 'Policy decisions are shaped by transparency and focused on meeting rakyat's needs,' he said. He urged public backing for Madani policies promoting unity and inclusivity amid global economic pressures. – Bernama
