Iran's Khamenei makes first public appearance since Israel war

New Straits Times13 hours ago
TEHRAN: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday made his first public appearance since the outbreak of his country's recent 12-day war with Israel, taking part in a religious ceremony here, state media reported.
The octogenarian leader was shown in a video broadcast by state television greeting people and being cheered at a mosque as worshippers marked the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, an important date for Syiah Muslims.
Khamenei, 86, can be seen on stage dressed in black as the crowd before him, fists in the air, chants "The blood in our veins for our leader!"
State TV said the clip was filmed at central Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosque, named for the founder of the Islamic republic.
Khamenei, in power since 1989, spoke last week in a pre-recorded video, but had not been seen in public since before Israel initiated the conflict with a wave of surprise air strikes on June 13.
His last public appearance was two days before that, when he met with members of parliament.
Israel's bombing campaign followed a decades-long shadow war with Iran, and was aimed at preventing it from developing a nuclear weapon -- an ambition Tehran has consistently denied.
The strikes killed more than 900 people in Iran, its judiciary has said, while retaliatory Iranian missile barrages aimed at Israeli cities killed at least 28 people there, according to official figures. - AFP

Two Iran Guards killed clearing explosives after Israel war

TEHRAN: Two members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards were killed Sunday while attempting to defuse explosives in an area of the country's west hit by Israeli strikes last month, Iranian media reported. Israel and Iran fought a 12-day war sparked by an Israeli bombing campaign on June 13. The strikes, according to Israel, were aimed at preventing the Islamic republic from developing a nuclear weapon – an ambition Tehran has consistently denied. Tasnim news agency, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said that "two members of the Guards were killed Sunday in Khorramabad while clearing the area of explosives left by the Zionist regime's aggression." The Israeli strikes during the war killed key commanders of Iran's armed forces, including Guards, as well as top nuclear scientists. Separately on Sunday, the Fars news agency reported the death of an Iranian soldier in Yazd, central Iran, from injuries sustained during one of Israel's attacks. The strikes during the war killed more than 900 people across Iran, its judiciary has said, while retaliatory Iranian missile barrages killed at least 28 people in Israel, according to official figures. A ceasefire between the two arch-foes took effect on June 24. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday made his first public appearance since the war broke out, state media reported, taking part in a religious ceremony in Tehran. Iran announced the reopening of its airspace on Thursday, including over Tehran, which had been closed since the first day of the war.--AFP

Armed gang attacks Kenya Human Rights Commission

NAIROBI: An armed gang attacked the headquarters of the Kenyan Human Rights Commission on Sunday as it hosted a press conference calling for an end to state violence, an AFP journalist saw. The press conference was being held ahead of Monday's 'Saba Saba Day', an annual commemoration of pro-democracy protests in the 1990s. 'The gate was locked but they forced themselves in. They were attacking and robbing guys, saying: 'You are planning protests here',' the journalist said. The Women's Collective Kenya, a grassroots rights movement, had helped organise the press conference to call for 'an immediate end to arbritrary arrests, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings of their children for taking to the streets'. But the meeting had yet to start when the gang of around 20 people attacked, some armed with sticks, forcing many to flee for safety. 'Armed goons have attacked offices of the Kenya Human Rights Commission,' the Women's Collective posted on X. Armed 'goons', as they are widely known in Kenya, have been deployed to attack protesters in recent weeks. Protesters marching against police violence on June 17 were attacked by hundreds of men on motorbikes armed with whips and clubs. AFP journalists at the scene saw them working with the apparent protection of police, and some openly said they had been paid by local government leaders. At least 19 people died on June 25 as another day of protests turned violent, with thousands of businesses looted and destroyed. There is deep resentment against President William Ruto over economic stagnation and corruption, and anger has been fuelled by police killings and dozens of illegal detentions since large-scale protests first broke out in June 2024. – AFP

Palestinian National Council Urges Global Action To Stop Israeli Crimes

RAMALLAH, July 6 (Bernama-QNA) -- The Palestinian National Council (PNC) called on the international community to take immediate action to stop the crimes of the Israeli occupation and to provide urgent international protection for the Palestinian people, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported. It demanded that the occupation be held accountable before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the atrocities committed against civilians in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank. PNC Chairman Rawhi Fattouh stated on Sunday that the forced displacement of dozens of Palestinian families from the Arab Al Malihat area northwest of Jericho is a new crime added to the occupation's long record of violations of international law.
