Here's what you need to know about the foreign transaction fees going up on UAE cards

Travelling abroad? Your next holiday might cost more than just flights and hotel bookings – especially if you're swiping a UAE-issued card.
Starting September 22, UAE banks will raise the foreign transaction fee to 3.14 percent on all international purchases and ATM withdrawals made using credit or debit cards.
Whether you're shopping on a U.S.-based website or booking a boutique hotel in Rome, the fee applies – and it's a noticeable jump from the current 2.09 percent.
What's actually changing?
Customers across the UAE have begun receiving notices from their banks confirming the change. The new fee structure typically includes:
1 percent currency conversion fee (charged by Visa, Mastercard, or Amex)
2.14 percent bank processing fee
That adds up to a total 3.14 percent surcharge – so if you're spending Dhs5,000 abroad, expect to pay an extra Dhs157 in fees alone.
The hidden fee trap: DCC
One sneaky charge to avoid? Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). It might seem helpful when a foreign merchant offers to convert your purchase into dirhams on the spot, but it's rarely a good deal.
DCC often comes with inflated exchange rates – sometimes adding 5-7 percent extra – and you may still be charged the full foreign transaction fee.
Tip: Always choose to pay in the local currency, not AED, when using your card overseas.
How to dodge the worst of the fees
The 3.14 percent fee may be unavoidable for many travellers, but there are ways to cut the cost:
Use a travel-friendly or 'no foreign fee' credit card: Some UAE banks offer cards that waive these fees entirely.
Withdraw cash strategically: Pull out larger amounts at once rather than frequent ATM visits, which can each trigger fees.
Say no to DCC: Stick with local currency whenever you're asked at a store, restaurant, or ATM.
Try multicurrency prepaid travel cards: Some UAE fintechs offer these with fixed exchange rates and no added foreign transaction charges.
Know your fees: Check your bank's app or fee schedule before you travel so you're not caught off guard.
A homegrown alternative may be coming
Later this year, the UAE is expected to roll out its Jaywan card internationally – a new payment system that could offer lower foreign transaction fees and better rates. It's not available globally just yet, but watch this space.
The upcoming fee hike means UAE travellers will need to be more strategic with how they spend overseas. From choosing the right credit card to dodging costly conversions, a little prep could save you hundreds of dirhams on your next trip.

Space42 Partners with Microsoft, Esri on Africa Maps

Home » Tech Value Chain » Global Brands » Space42 Partners with Microsoft, Esri on Africa Maps UAE-based SpaceTech company Space42 (ADX: SPACE42), part of the G42 Group, has announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft and Esri. The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during Esri's 2025 User Conference. The initiative, called the 'Map Africa Initiative,' aims to deliver high-resolution, scalable base maps for all 54 African countries. It will serve over 1.4 billion people, creating the most comprehensive base map of the continent to date. The five-year project is expected to address gaps in infrastructure, investment, and data availability across Africa. The updated mapping system will help drive economic development by improving access to intelligent geospatial solutions. These solutions will support governments, businesses, and communities in both Africa and the UAE. Space42 will lead fundraising and project management, leveraging its satellite data and AI-powered Digital Twin models to create dynamic, use-specific maps. Esri will provide its remote sensing and GeoAI capabilities, while Microsoft will supply secure cloud infrastructure and an AI framework via Azure. • The initiative supports national mapping agencies with accurate, updatable data. • It also aims to create a new commercial ecosystem for African startups. The project is expected to enhance strategic sectors such as logistics, renewable energy, disaster response, and smart city planning. Data will be stored in Microsoft and G42-managed centers across Africa. Space42 CEO Hasan Al Hosani emphasized that the partnership aligns with the UAE's collaborative and innovation-driven approach. He noted that accurate mapping is essential for growth and inclusive innovation. Esri President Jack Dangermond said the initiative builds on proven geospatial workflows and will enable sustainable development across the continent. The MoU deepens Space42's partnerships with Microsoft and Esri, while expanding its presence and commercial opportunities in Africa. It also reflects Space42's role as a trusted provider of large-scale geospatial solutions for governments. G42 CEO Peng Xiao stated that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to using AI as a force for good. He said the project will help transform data into development and intelligence into impact. The initiative also aligns with the UAE's broader global investment and innovation agenda. The UAE was Africa's largest foreign investor in 2024, deploying $44 billion. Space42 plays a key role in advancing this agenda through SpaceTech and AI. The mapping initiative supports long-term goals of smart land use, modern infrastructure, and digital economies across the continent. It also strengthens diplomatic and commercial ties between the UAE and Africa.

UAE rents have risen by almost a quarter over the last 10 years

Rental rates across the UAE have risen by an average of 23.6 per cent over the past ten years, recent data shows. According to research by Property Finder, a real estate portal, between November 2023 and November 2024, the average rental price increased by 23.6 per cent across the country. The average rental price increased by 33.0 per cent over five years (November 2019 to November 2024), driven by an influx of expatriates and an increase in rental contracts. Rental properties continue to be popular across the UAE. For many residents, especially expats, renting offers flexibility without the long-term commitment of ownership. While property prices have risen in some areas, renting often remains the more affordable option, especially for those prioritising location or lifestyle amenities. Many people also value the convenience of renting, with maintenance typically handled by landlords or property managers. This makes it easier to manage day-to-day life. However, rental demand tends to vary across the UAE, with certain communities offering these benefits and more. UAE's top rental hotspots As of June 2025, Dubai garnered the most searches for apartments for rent on Property Finder. Sharjah and Abu Dhabi ranked second and third, respectively, in terms of page views, according to internal data on Property Finder. Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC) has the highest number of page views for apartments for rent among the Dubai communities, with 214,607 page views. Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) stands out with 4,910 listings marked as favorites on Property Finder, more than any other area in the city. Dubai dominates the market in terms of both rental activity and property availability, showcasing the high demand for apartments for rent in Dubai. The communities with the most rental properties in Dubai are: JVC (9,092), Business Bay (5,631), Downtown Dubai (5,541) and Dubai Marina (4,933). Of these popular rental communities, apartments make up an average of 96 per cent of the available units on Property Finder, highlighting the demand for apartments in Dubai. The average yearly rent across all communities is approximately Dh86,222. Palm Jumeirah stands out as the most expensive community, with an average annual rent of Dh170,000. Al Nahda, a community in Sharjah, has the lowest average yearly rent at Dh43,000. Dubai recorded its highest listing at Dh1,500,000 per year and its lowest at Dh28,000. The average rent is Dh90,000. Abu Dhabi's highest listing is recorded at Dh350,000 per year, and the lowest is Dh27,000. The average rent is Dh82,999. Rental prices in the UAE have seen strong growth over the short and long term. 'Rental activity across the UAE reflects broader trends that include growing expat populations, economic opportunities, and shifting preferences in housing. Dubai leads in volume and variety, while Sharjah and Abu Dhabi offer competitive alternatives. As 2025 unfolds, renters will continue to look for communities offering the best price, location, and lifestyle,' a statement said.
