‘Pokémon' Studio's Next Game Is ‘Beast of Reincarnation', An Action RPG Set For 2026

Geek Culture09-06-2025
Game Freak, the studio behind the Pokémon franchise, has unveiled its newest game, Beast of Reincarnation, a third-person fantasy action RPG due for launch in 2026.
Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic Japan ruined by corruption, and follows protagonist Emma, 'an outcast cursed as a Blighted One', and her canine companion Koo as they 'journey across an ominous, ever-changing world where dangerous forests can erupt in the wasteland', with the game's trailer featuring slick third-person exploration and combat using nature-based abilities like summoning giant vines for traversal, and combat against both towering beasts and mechanical monstrosities alike.

According to the game's description, the core gameplay experience will be built around 'demanding, technical combat', which alludes to it featuring systems and difficulty akin to the souls-like genre, where studying an opponent's attack patterns and reacting accordingly is crucial, as opposed to hacking and slashing, with the trailer featuring what seems to be a timing-based parry system with Emma able to deflect yellow-tinted attacks.
Previously under the working title Project Bloom, Beast of Reincarnation's gameplay evokes the same feel as Koei Tecmo's 2023 monster-hunting game Wild Hearts, featuring intense boss encounters with massive beasts plagued by some form of fungal corruption, although it remains to be seen if boss fights will be the focus of the title, or if it will feature a more traditional RPG format.
Beast of Reincarnation will launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC sometime in 2026.

'Frieren: Beyond Journey's End' Season 2 Debuts Trailer, 'The Apothecary Diaries' Lands Sequel

It's still a while before the next chapter of Frieren's journey kicks off, but Crunchyroll has treated fans to a sneak peek of what's to come. The streamer showcased the first trailer for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 at Anime Expo 2025 on 4 July, confirming its previously announced January 2026 release, alongside the reveal of a new director. Tomoya Kitagawa, who previously contributed storyboards and directed multiple episodes of the first season, is directing the sophomore outing, taking over the reins from Keiichiro Saito. The latter, best known for his work on Bocchi the Rock! , will oversee production as the supervising director, joining producer Yuichiro Fukushi ( One-Punch Man ), assistant director Daiki Harashina ( takt op. Destiny ), series composer Tomohiro Suzuki ( One-Punch Man ), and character designers Takasemaru ( Violet Evergarden ), Keisuke Kojima ( 100 Metres ), and Yuri Fujinaka ( SPY x FAMILY CODE: White ) on the creative team. Seiko Yoshioka, who worked on background art for Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo , is handling the concept art. As previously reported, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 will be helmed by returning animation studio Madhouse. The anime is based on the original manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe and premiered with a two-hour special on 29 September 2023. It became a critical darling over 28 episodes, earning nominations for Anime of the Year and scoring wins for Best Drama, Best Director, Best Background Art, and Best Supporting Character at this year's Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The epic fantasy isn't the only popular series to receive a follow-up. Following its season two finale in Japan, a sequel to The Apothecary Diaries was also announced during the annual event. No release date was shared for the forthcoming Season 3, but the anime's official account teased that the story will move to 'a new land'. Based on the original light novels by Natsu Hyuuga and illustrator Touko Shino, the historical drama series is described as follows: ' Maomao lived a peaceful life with her apothecary father. Until one day, she's sold as a lowly servant to the emperor's palace. But she wasn't meant for a compliant life among royalty. So when imperial heirs fall ill, she decides to step in and find a cure! This catches the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official who promotes her. Now, she's making a name for herself solving medical mysteries! 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2' Will Return To Night City As A Standalone Sequel

David's story may have come to an end, but the world of Night City lives on. After teasing a potential animated series last year, Netflix and CD Projekt Red have announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 , a standalone sequel to the 2022 darling. Announced at Anime Expo 2025, the forthcoming spin-off will feature 'an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.' The video game developer is reuniting with Studio Trigger for the project, with Kai Ikarashi ( ) and Kanno Ichigo ( Promare ) serving as director and lead character designer, respectively. Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka, who worked on the original, are back onboard. 'Night City has a lot of stories to tell. I have a dream that it won't end with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners . There's more stories, more characters. I wasn't satisfied with the sadness I received from the audience, so I want you to be even more sad now,' Sztybor said, adding that the 10-episode season is set to be 'of course, sadder, but it will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge,' reads a summary of the follow-up instalment. 'In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?' No release date has been announced for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 , but here's a first look at its official logo and poster art: Night City is due to return on the gaming front as well, though not anytime soon. Cyberpunk 2 , the sequel to 2020's Cyberpunk 2077 , has entered the pre-production phase of development, placing the game's release date somewhere between late 2030 and early 2031. 'Resident Evil Survival Unit' Is An RTS Mobile Spin-Off

There's a new Resident Evil game in the works, just probably not what most are expecting. Korean mobile gaming developer Joycity Corporation has announced Resident Evil Survival Unit , a real-time strategy (RTS) mobile spin-off based on the iconic survival horror franchise. Resident Evil 2 (2019) Joycity, which previously made other licensed RTS mobile spin-offs such as 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War , will co-develop the upcoming title with Japanese entertainment company Aniplex, with the game being made in 'close collaboration with Capcom to ensure authenticity and quality', according to its press release. ' Resident Evil: Survival Unit offers a fresh take on the beloved franchise, reimagining the survival horror universe as a real-time strategy experience optimised for mobile platforms, iOS and Android,' read the release, 'The game is designed to appeal to both longtime fans and new players.' A full reveal of the mobile game will take place this week, but for now, fans have their first clue of the game's setting via an artwork accompanying the game's logo. The image depicts what seems to be a road leading into town during a heavy thunderstorm, with a billboard on the roadside for the notorious Umbrella Corporation, featuring a happy couple with the words 'Our Business is life itself…' With the presence of Umbrella, this could hint at the game being set in Raccoon City, as the evil corporation had a significant presence in the city before its eventual downfall. In this vein, it won't be surprising if the title featured familiar faces such as a young Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, or even Hunk. As to how the mobile game will adapt the survival horror shooting format into an RTS remains to be seen, with more details being revealed during an online showcase set to broadcast on YouTube on 10 July 2025. Resident Evil Survival Unit will launch for iOS and Android across North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Asia.
