Bailey bridge to temporarily replace collapsed Sg Liat Bridge
He said the road leading to the bridge must first be repaired, while the construction of the 46-metre-long bridge will commence tomorrow and is expected to be completed by April 27.
'We hope it can be completed as scheduled, as residents in the vicinity use this route daily,' he said after visiting the collapse site at Felda Sungai Klah. Also present was Behrang assemblyman Salina Samsudin.
On April 20, the Sungai Liat Bridge collapsed, cutting off access to Felda Residence Hot Spring, Kampung Tisong and the Buyong Mas Sanctuary Campsite.
The collapse left 136 individuals stranded, including 81 students from a local polytechnic living in the area.
Yesterday, state executive councillor for Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, announced that the collapsed bridge will be temporarily replaced with a Bailey bridge.
Meanwhile, Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan said the permanent bridge at the site is estimated to cost around RM3 million.
Salina hoped the bridge could be completed as scheduled, as residents in the affected areas currently have to use an alternative route to reach Sungkai town.
'The 1.7-kilometre detour passes through an oil palm plantation and can only be used by those with four-wheel drive vehicles,' she said.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia has secured RM8.13 billion in potential investments following an economic roundtable and meetings during his three-day official visit to Italy which concluded today. Bernama reported that the potential investments span the petrochemical, machinery and equipment, electrical and electronics, and oil and gas services sectors. Anwar met representatives from 23 companies in manufacturing, nine in services, five government agencies, two industry groups, and two trade organisations during his trip. The engagements are expected to generate RM425 million in potential exports involving oleochemical products, renewable energy, biofuel feedstock, animal feed additives, and food products. During a bilateral meeting with Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy, solar power, geothermal, and hydrogen sectors. Notable collaborations include a Petronas–Eni SpA joint venture in Johor on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a partnership between Perodua and Magna Steyr on electric vehicle batteries, and investment in modernising Malaysia's electricity grid, including links to the Asean Power Grid. Anwar also urged Italy to recognise the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, requested Italian support for a fairer implementation of the EU Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR), and expressed Malaysia's aim to be classified as 'low risk' in the EU's deforestation benchmark by 2026. He also sought Italy's support to conclude the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. Malaysia–Italy trade rose 2% to US$3.18 billion (RM14.61 billion) last year. Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia intends to purchase maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters and naval vessels from Italy to bolster its national security capabilities. Bernama reported that the acquisition would include two maritime patrol aircraft, as well as 28 Leonardo AW149 helicopters, while Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri is expected to supply multi-role support ships and littoral mission ships. Anwar said these defence assets would help strengthen Malaysia's long-standing bilateral ties with Italy, which is renowned for its advanced military industry. Anwar arrived in Rome on Tuesday for a maiden official visit at Meloni's invitation. Anwar is also visiting France and Brazil, as part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level. Among others, Anwar is scheduled to meet with French president Emmanuel Macron.

Saberkas plans own HQ with multi-purpose hall to strengthen youth outreach

Its president Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposal will be tabled at the organisation's upcoming meeting, and may be brought to the attention of the state government for consideration. 'I think it is time for Saberkas to have its own headquarters with a hall to rent for various purposes such as weddings and sports in the hall. 'We see how Wisma SABATI is being fully utilised, and we want the same for Saberkas,' he told a press conference after chairing the Sarawak Saberkas Supreme Exco Meeting at a hotel here today. He noted that the current Saberkas office is located on the 20th floor of Wisma Saberkas, while the 19th floor is leased to the Public Works Department (JKR). Only two floors of the building are owned by the organisation, while the remainder is under private ownership. On upcoming initiatives, Abdul Karim, who is also State Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development; and State Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts announced two major youth programmes for this year – the Saberkas President's Cup Futsal Championship and the Youth Glamping Programme. The futsal tournament is scheduled for November in Samarahan, featuring attractive prizes to be finalised by the organising committee. Open exclusively to Saberkas members, it will involve participation from all 82 branches across Sarawak. 'This futsal will be a big event, and I believe the attractive prizes will attract many participants. The main condition is that participants must be Saberkas members. 'This will be a good platform to strengthen ties among youth from all over Sarawak,' he said. Meanwhile, the Youth Glamping Programme is planned for August in Layar, Betong, to offer participants a nature-based, yet impactful experience. Touching on Saberkas' overall performance, Abdul Karim said the organisation has shown strong momentum in 2025, with 55,992 registered members, 494 units, and 82 branches throughout the state. 'During the period from November 2024 to June 2025 alone, a total of 244 programs have been carried out covering social, welfare, sports, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and education activities. 'I would not be surprised if by the end of this year, the number of programs reaches 500. 'The Women's Bureau and the Saberkas Caring Unit in helping the community, especially during disasters such as floods and fires are also active in programmes,' he said. On finances, Abdul Karim said Saberkas is in a healthy position, with RM3 million placed in fixed deposits and regular income generated from its owned commercial spaces. 'We have assets that generate returns, and every month we have good collections. Strategic approach needed for sustainable fiscal savings
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is currently focusing on identifying tax mechanisms that can be implemented and are compatible with the country's existing economic framework. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said any move to introduce new taxes must ensure that the revenue collected is sufficient, justified, and beneficial to the people. "The government is only considering tax options that can be implemented and are suited to our economic system. "If we look at measures such as the luxury tax and capital gains tax, these represent major policy shifts," he said on the Keluar Sekejap podcast hosted by Shahril Hamdan and Khairy Jamaluddin. "What we need to assess is whether the revenue collected from such taxes is adequate to meet our needs and whether it's worth the effort. That's the balancing act we are managing. "The key is that when we move forward, we do so prudently, minimise the impact, and evaluate the outcomes," he added. On RON95 fuel subsidies, Amir confirmed that a targeted subsidy mechanism is scheduled to be implemented before the end of the year, with the Cabinet still finalising the income threshold for eligibility. He said the government is working to determine a fair cut-off point to ensure that subsidies reach those who genuinely need them. "If we are going to define who qualifies, the challenge lies in deciding where to draw that line. "Any new mechanism must not be more burdensome than the current system and should be designed to minimise leakages. "Otherwise, people will find ways to bypass it. We believe using the MyKad is currently the most viable option. I believe most Malaysians are honest and will do the right thing," he said. As for the government's fiscal goals related to subsidies, Amir stressed that decisions should not be based solely on arbitrary savings targets. "We can't just say we want to save RM5 billion or RM3 billion and then make cuts arbitrarily. That's not a compassionate approach," he said. Instead, he said the government needs a sustainable model, similar to the targeted diesel subsidy, to ensure aid reaches the intended groups while protecting them from future price shocks.
