It took seven rounds of a tense penalty shootout to decide the outcome, but CF Montreal secured a dramatic 7-6 victory over LIGA MX side Club Leon in Tuesday's first match of the 2025 Leagues Cup at Stade Saputo.
Rogelio Funes Mori opened the scoring for Club Leon in the 11th minute, but Montreal's Prince Owusu scored in the 62nd minute to tie the match.
'I think today is probably one of our best games this season. We're taking a lot of risks with our play and that means that players are comfortable to try this kind of stuff,' said interim head coach Marco Donadel.
'There's no frustration (with missed chances), especially when the guys give everything on the field. We wanted to keep the pace very high.'
In the shootout, Joel Waterman, Brendan Craig, Bryce Duke, Olger Escobar, Luca Petrasso, Tom Pearce and Owusu scored for Montreal.
This year's Leagues Cup features 36 teams — 18 from Major League Soccer, and 18 from LIGA MX, where the top four from each table advance, rather than a conventional group stage qualification format.
The tournament runs until the end of August.
In the event of a draw after 90 minutes, both teams earn a single point, and the winner of the shootout will be awarded an extra point.
'Some stuff didn't go our way, and it was tricky, but we got the result and we got the job done,' said Montreal's Samuel Piette. 'It's a win that's worth two points. It's a new tournament and a new format, so we'll take what we can get.'
James Rodriguez, Adonis Frias, Emiliano Rigoni, Ettson Ayon, Rodrigo Echeverria, Valentin Gauthier all scored for Club Leon, with Sebastian Santos hitting the bar and ending the game.
Montreal looked to set the tone physically from the opening kickoff, pressing a Leon side that has only played three competitive matches this season.
This helped keep the danger in front of the Leon goal, but the Mexican side would be the first to score, against the run of play.
Rodriguez was able to carve out enough room on the right flank to send in a perfect ball that was met by Funes Mori's header.
The shot was then mishandled by Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois, giving the visitors an early lead.
Montreal replied with an immediate increase in pressure, spending the rest of the first half firmly planted in the attacking third, but Leon's low defensive block held up.
That same pressure continued in the second half as Montreal created two more golden scoring opportunities, but missed the target on both, leading to a change in formation at the hour-mark that immediately paid off.
'We talked about it with the guys and just how much fun it was, different kind of game and different kind of atmosphere,' said Waterman. 'You always want to have fun while playing football. It's bittersweet too, because I think we should've had all three points.'
After breaking away from his defender, Dante Sealy was able to pick out a ball into space for Owusu, who was in flight behind the defensive line and finished into the bottom right corner.
With momentum now on their side, Montreal nearly took the lead on several occasions in the 10 minutes following the goal but were frustrated repeatedly by Leon goalkeeper Oscar Jiminez.
With nothing to separate both teams after 90 minutes, penalties were needed to settle the match.

Injury sidelines Andre De Grasse from Canadian championship, Audrey Leduc wins women's 100 metres

Andre De Grasse is skipping the Canadian championship in Ottawa due to tightness in his hamstring. De Grasse, a seven-time Olympic medallist and the anchor of Canada's 4x100-metre gold-medal team at the 2024 Paris Summer Games, said the injury will keep him from competing this weekend. "Unfortunately, I won't be competing this weekend," De Grasse told CTV News. "I picked up a little bit of tightness a couple of weeks ago with my hamstring so I'm going to play it safe and not do any extra damage I need to do. I'll just be here this weekend signing autographs, doing meet-and-greets, taking pictures and just hanging out with my fans and making sure everyone has a chance to see me." However, the 200m Olympic champion from 2021 said he'll be good to for the World Athletics Championship when the event takes play in Tokyo from Sept. 13-21. "I have about five-six weeks, so I should be good. It's just a little bit of tightness in my hamstring so I don't want to risk it and make it worse," De Grasse said. "I've been getting a lot of treatment from the team doctors here, making sure I'm ready to go when it matters." On the track, sprinter Audrey Leduc of Gatineau, Que., won the senior women's 100-metres championship on Friday night, clocking 11.06 to top the eight-runner final at the Canadian track and field championships. The 26-year-old Leduc, who holds the Canadian records in the 100-metres (10.95) and 200 metres (22.36) — both set in 2024 — finished just ahead of Olympian Sade McCreath (11.09) of Ajax, Ont., and Jacqueline Madogo (11.21) of Ottawa, who became the 200-metres national champion in 2023. Olympian sprinter Duan Asemota of Montreal won the men's 100-metre championship in a 10.12 photo finish, just edging out Aaron Brown (10.13) of Toronto, who was part of Canada's 4x100-metre relay team that won gold in 2024. Eliezer Adjibi (10.21) of Ottawa finished third.

Canadian hopes dashed as Gabriel Diallo falls to Taylor Fritz in third round at NBO Toronto

TORONTO — Canada's singles hopes were dashed at the National Bank Open on Friday night when Montreal's Gabriel Diallo dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Taylor Fritz. Article content The second-seeded American secured early service breaks in each set and closed out the victory in one hour 15 minutes. Article content Article content Diallo, the No. 27 seed, was the last Canadian left in the 96-man singles draw. The other seeded Canadians — Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime (No. 21) and Denis Shapovalov (No. 22) of Richmond Hill, Ont. — lost their opening matches earlier in the week. Article content Fritz was more consistent and played a steadier game than the 23-year-old Diallo, who recently won his first ATP Tour event in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. Article content Diallo couldn't find his rhythm on a cool, comfortable evening at Sobeys Stadium. He sprayed shots at inopportune times, his net play seemed off and the unforced errors caught up to him. Article content Fritz, who won a five-set battle when they played at Wimbledon a month ago, seemed content to let Diallo keep making mistakes rather than outpower him. Article content The Centre Court crowd did its best to support Diallo, but he was unable to generate much energy in the venue. Another service break came in the seventh game of the second set and Fritz served it out for the victory. Article content The American will face Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round. The Czech posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Arthur Fils of France earlier in the day. Article content Article content Other third-round winners included 20th-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, 13th-seeded Italian Flavio Cobolli, seventh-seeded American Frances Tiafoe and sixth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev. Article content Fourth-ranked Ben Shelton was scheduled to play fellow American Brandon Nakashima in the feature night match. Article content In doubles play, Sander Arends of the Netherlands and Argentina's Guido Andreozzi needed just 52 minutes to post a 6-0, 6-3 win over the wild-card duo of Nicolas Arsenault of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Vancouver's Justin Boulais.
