Malaysia, Japan to deepen strategic ties in energy transition and sustainability

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is seeking to strengthen strategic cooperation with Japan, particularly in the areas of energy transition and sustainability, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said his meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida today marked a significant step in enhancing bilateral cooperation to address global challenges, especially in advancing clean energy and environmental sustainability.
He added that as the Asean 2025 chair, Malaysia is committed to leading regional efforts toward a low-carbon future.
"In that spirit, we welcome Japan's technical support and advanced research, including through initiatives such as the Asia Zero Emission Community, particularly to fast-track the implementation of Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap on a large scale," he said in a Facebook post today.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said Japan's expertise in renewable energy, bioenergy, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies positions it as a valuable partner in Malaysia's efforts to become a regional hub for sustainable and innovative energy solutions.
"To that end, Malaysia has proposed the establishment of a new centre of cooperation in the country to enhance cross-sector collaboration in technology, sustainability, and Asean energy integration.
"With expanded linkages between industry, policy and research communities in both nations, we are confident that Malaysia can accelerate its energy transition agenda, pioneer innovative solutions, and strengthen regional economic resilience.
"This is the time to act — to empower our economy and secure a sustainable legacy for future generations," he added.
Malaysia's ties with Japan have continued to deepen since both nations elevated their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in December 2023.
Japan remains a key economic partner, with nearly 3,000 manufacturing projects involving Japanese participation implemented in Malaysia as of June last year.
These projects represent a total investment of RM105.2 billion (US$30.4 billion) and have created nearly 344,000 jobs.
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Japan was Malaysia's fourth-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the fourth quarter of 2024, with investments valued at RM102.02 billion — an increase from RM94.18 billion recorded in the same period in 2023.

Ringgit extends gains vs US$ amid rate cut talks

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit extended its gains to open higher against the US dollar today, as investor sentiment on risk assets rebounded amid talk of a possible United States (US) interest rate cut, an economist said. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2260/2395 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2350/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that the US dollar slipped further as market participants continued to digest last Friday's weak labour market data, which bolstered the odds of a rate cut. "It appears that emerging market currencies against the US dollar are in a sweet spot, as the Federal Reserve seems poised to cut its policy rate, perhaps at an accelerated pace, to demonstrate to markets that it is on top of the situation. "The September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is likely to see a 25-basis-point rate cut,' he said. Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit is expected to linger within a range of RM4.22 to RM4.23 against the US dollar, supported by the prevailing positive sentiment. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly higher against other major currencies in early trade. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8795/8889 from 2.8652/8677 on Monday, but strengthened against the British pound to 5.6197/6377 from 5.6296/6342, and edged higher against the euro at 4.8954/9110 from 4.8978/9018. The local unit was also mostly higher versus regional currencies. The ringgit rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.2841/2949 from Monday's close of 3.2878/2908, but slipped against the Thai baht to 13.0747/1229 from 13.0452/0616. It appreciated against the Philippine peso at 7.36/7.39 from 7.38/7.39 yesterday, and firmed against the Indonesian rupiah to 257.6/258.5 from 258.2/258.5. - Bernama

MyKom arrives in Sarawak, out to support mainstream media, not against it

KUCHING (Aug 5): Media Komunikasi Nasional (MyKom) has officially expanded its operations here, positioning itself as an alternative media platform that supports and complements mainstream media, rather than competing with it. According to the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin, MyKom remains a credible and authoritative source within Malaysia's media and public communication landscape. 'I am confident that although it is alternative, MyKom will be recognised, authoritative, and become a key reference in the realm of news and public communication in the country,' he said at the launch here yesterday. He pointed out that in an era saturated with information and growing demands for timely and accurate communication, the need for impactful messaging at the state and community levels had become more critical than ever. 'The launch of MyKom today is a clear signal that Sarawak is also taking this need seriously. I urge MyKom to move forward with courage and integrity, always anchored by the interests of the people. 'Do not be afraid to be a voice of principle. Do not hesitate to highlight stories from rural communities, stories of everyday people, and those that often go unheard in the mainstream media,' he said. Apart from that, Azman also stressed that the media's influence should be used to unite the people rather than divide, and to educate rather than to provoke. 'Media content should aim to strengthen social values, rather than merely chasing viewership or popularity.' Meanwhile, MyKom Sarawak managing director Zulrusdi Mohd Hol said the platform would utilise various social media channels including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X to disseminate news content. 'As a responsible new media outlet, we uphold Article 10 of the Federal Constitution which guarantees the right to speak, express, assemble, and associate. 'We also operate in compliance with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Sedition Act,' he said. Zulrusdi said MyKom's mission could be best summarised through a quote by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof during the closing of the Sarawak Journalists Conference last month: 'Truth must be spoken, dignity defended, and hope never extinguished.' Among those present at the event yesterday were MyKom Sarawak advisor Dato Sri Hafsah Harun and MyKom Sarawak chairman Nazib Johari.
