
Food safety stalwart given recognition
Four decades of food safety work have earned a local scientist national recognition.
University of Otago food science Professor Phil Bremer (pictured) has been named winner of the Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award at the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology's Industry Awards.
In a statement, New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said they were delighted to present Prof Bremer with the award.
"With more than 40 years of contributions to the food safety sector, Prof Bremer has made a significant contribution to food safety science ... His work has helped build effective food safety culture, industry best practice, equipment and processing technology, product and packaging development, and science and research."
A key achievement of his was leading the development of a guide to prevent contamination of infant formula with Cronobacter, a lethal bacterium for infants under six months old.
Prof Bremer serves as chief scientist at the New Zealand Food Safety and Scientific Research Centre and sits on several industry steering groups. — APL

Critically endangered fish found in two new sites, returns to another after years
A tiny native fish with a big conservation story has resurfaced in the streams of Central Otago. The Clutha flathead galaxias, a critically endangered species found nowhere else in the world, has been discovered in three separate locations in the Cardrona Valley, two new sites and one where the species had not been seen in more than 20 years. The discovery was made during an extensive field survey led by University of Otago postgraduate researcher Isaac Davies, supported by the inaugural Donald Scott Memorial Scholarship in Freshwater Ecology. Mr Davies and his research team surveyed 30 streams across the Cardrona Valley, ultimately detecting the elusive galaxias in small, trout-free headwaters protected by natural barriers. These findings underscore the importance of such barriers in shielding vulnerable native species from introduced predators such as brown and rainbow trout. Mr Davies said the Cardrona remained a valued sports fishery, "but this project demonstrates there's also room to recognise and protect the special native species that are still holding on in some of the valley's more remote corners". The Clutha flathead galaxias may be small, seldom exceeding 10cm, but its presence is a critical indicator of freshwater ecosystem health. With trout known to prey on or outcompete native species, the galaxias' survival often depends on remaining in isolated habitats above natural fish barriers. The project was made possible through a generous donation by Patricia Scott, who established the scholarship in memory of her late husband, Donald Scott, a long-serving Fish & Game councillor and passionate advocate for freshwater conservation. "The outstanding work in the discovery of these new populations of rare galaxiids by the first scholar of the Donald Scott Memorial Scholarship proves the worth of Fish & Game's ongoing commitment to scientific research and to being kaitiaki of the taiao," Mrs Scott said. Otago Fish & Game chief executive Ian Hadland welcomed the findings, noting they aligned with the organisation's approach to balancing the needs of both native species and the region's popular trout fisheries. "We're committed to supporting resilient ecosystems that support both native fish and a world-class sports fishery. "This work, guided by our Regional Species Management and Interaction Policy, shows the value of partnerships in getting there." In addition to mapping galaxias populations, Mr Davies' research is shedding new light on the species' life history — including spawning age, egg size and the downstream drift of larvae — which will help guide future conservation efforts and fishery management strategies. University of Otago' department of zoology professor Gerry Closs said the support from the scholarship and partner organisations made a tangible difference. "Supporting students enables these critical discoveries to be made." The research also identified priority sites for future environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling, which will help provide a clearer picture of where native fish populations persist and how best to protect them. ‘Obsession' leads to Wikipedian placement

PHOTO: GERARD O'BRIEN What started out as a hobby quickly became "an obsession". Now it has gone one step further and become a profession for Dr Tamsin Braisher. The University of Otago researcher and editor of science papers has been named a Wikipedian in residence, making the university the first tertiary institution in New Zealand to have its own Wikipedian. Universities are home to experts on a variety of topics, ranging from the life cycle of a freshwater parasite or the inspirations behind a historic author, to the geological processes that shaped a specific mountain. They are places for people to discover and share the intricacies of their favourite subjects. Hosted by institutions such as universities, museums or libraries, the role of a Wikipedian in residence is to help their institution's engagement with Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. They may assist with Wikipedia entries related to the institution's mission, releasing material under open licences and developing the relationship between the institution and the wider Wikipedia community. The role is funded by a grant from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand, the New Zealand affiliate of the international Wikimedia Foundation, which aims to provide free open access to knowledge via projects such as Wikipedia. Dr Braisher was delighted with her new role. She first began editing Wikipedia pages in her spare time in 2018, and in 2022 she ran the New Zealand Thesis Project, which made dissertations from all New Zealand universities more visible and accessible, leading to them to being cited in more than 2000 Wikipedia articles, in 34 languages. Then in 2024, still in her own time, she achieved a remarkable feat by creating 367 new Wikipedia profiles on notable New Zealand women — more than one a day. Dr Braisher said she took on the mammoth task in response to the significant gender imbalance on the online encyclopedia website. "It started as a hobby, and then because I was only working part-time, it grew into, you know, rather more. "You could probably call it an obsession." Now that she was a Wikipedian in residence, her role had a different focus, she said. "I'll be spending my time helping staff and students understand how Wikipedia works, and how they can engage with it. "Some of the work will be about helping students to understand how to read Wikipedia critically, looking at the reliability of the sources that have been used on a page, the history of the writing of a page, thinking of what might be missing — what we call digital literacy skills." Graduate students might be extended into improving articles as a way of learning research communication skills, she said. "I've already worked with some anatomy students to examine how some Wikipedia articles on particular muscles could be improved. "And then there's looking at how information the university holds could be used to improve Wikipedia. "For instance, the Hocken Collections are a treasure trove of images and information about New Zealand, and I'm looking forward to working with the experts there to identify what could be released openly," she said.

Survey set to shed light on wedge
Coastal residents may spot a regular visitor to Clutha waters this month. The Otago Regional Council is set to conduct a bathymetric coastal survey in Molyneux Bay using the University of Otago's RV Tūhura. The vessel will observe seafloor elevations of a 6500-year-old sand wedge, made up of sediment from the Clutha Mata-Au River. Council natural hazards analyst Julion Wright said the survey would determine the latest dimensions of the coastal Clutha sand wedge deposit, which spilled river sediment into the Southern Ocean. Mr Wright said the sand wedge deposits were an important part of the South Otago sediment system, containing a large volume of sediment that might possibly contribute to the stability of the coast. "The modern sediment of the wedge is formed by deposits of material from the Clutha River over the last 6500 years. "This survey will be compared to a similar ORC survey, from 2013, to map any changes in the sand wedge deposit. "The results of this will have future implications for coastal and river management in South Otago." One such implication could be a better understanding of sediment accumulation and movement, as well as river mouth and coastal erosion effects, he said. Molyneux Bay lies to the south of Balclutha and encompasses the mouth of the Clutha Mata-Au River, down to the Nugget Point lighthouse, south of Kākā Point township. The offshore survey would be conducted by Geomatics NZ and use a single-beam echo sounder mounted on the research vessel. The Tuhura, a 6.5 m aluminium powerboat for up to six people, can support restricted oceanographic work, limited bottom sampling, trawling and diving, as well as operate around coastal Otago and inland South Island waterways. The vessel would not be streaming any devices astern, Mr Wright said. Over a week, it was expected to travel about 180km within the bay. The survey was scheduled to run this month, but the timing was otherwise weather-dependent. He said the shallower part of the sand wedge was influenced by discharges from the Clutha as well as coastal processes. The offshore surveying would also be extended onshore, using land-surveying techniques to cover the coastal shape and structure. The gap between the onshore and offshore surveys had already been covered by an earlier, 2025 airborne bathymetric LiDAR survey (Light Detection and Ranging), he said. Once the survey was complete, it would take up to three weeks to process data to form 2D imagery, which would then be analysed to interpret what changes may, or may not, have occurred since the previous survey in 2013. The results will then be made publicly available.
