Steve Smith and Starc dragged into ugly scenes as West Indies bowler faces sanction

Yahoo4 days ago
West Indies quick Jayden Seales could be set for a fresh sanction after handing both Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc an over the top send-off after their dismissals. The Aussies were left reeling on day one of the third Test having been bowled out for 225 in the pink ball clash.
While Smith and Cameron Green offered up some resistance, the West Indies bowlers dominated under lights with no player reaching a half-century. And Seales wasn't going to let his previous fine from the ICC deter him from getting in the faces of the Aussies and stirring up the emotions.
Smith was closing in on his half-century when he edged a Shamar Joseph delivery to second-slip. And Seales opted to get in Smith's face and celebrate as he walked off the pitch. Reporter Bharat Sundaresan claimed the umpires then pulled Seales aside after yet another elaborate send-off from the quick this series.
But Seales wasn't finished there and saved his biggest for last. The West Indies quick bowled Starc for his second-wicket of the evening. The delivery cut back and when straight through bat and pad to clean up the stumps.
And Seales celebrated directly in Starc's face as he pointed at the bowler. Starc couldn't help but smile as walked off the pitch. While Starc may have seen the amusing side of the aggressive send-off, the ICC may not when it comes time to look at the two moments.
Seales has already been fined by the ICC after he gave Pat Cummins a send-off on the opening day of the first cricket Test against Australia. Send-offs are a thing of the past and strictly forbidden under the ICC's current laws.
Article 2.5 of the ICC's code of conduct forbids "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal." Seales may have once again crossed the line

Proper send-off for Steve Smith from Jayden Seales. Was jumping up & down yelling at Smith's face and the umpires pulled Seales aside for a chat immediately. They did have an exchange in the previous over too #WIvAus

In the first match, Cummins took it to Seales before he became the West Indies bowler's fourth scalp when he hit one straight to Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-off. Seales was clearly frustrated after leaking runs and pointed Cummins in the direction of the dressing rooms.
This saw him fined 15 per cent of his match fee and earn one demerit point. "In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Seales, for whom it was the second offence in a 24-month period, taking his tally of demerit points in a 24-month period to two," the governing body said in a statement after the first test match.
If a player accrues four demerit points in a 24-month period they receive a ban. Seales could be close to this four demerit point limit after his two clashes with Smith and Starc this time round.

Smith was the star of the Aussie batting line-up once again having reached 48 before his wicket. Green was able to add 46, but was Seales' first wicket of the day after a beautiful delivery took out his stumps. And while Australia only managed to scramble 225 on the board, Green was full of compliments of Smith.
"It was almost like he was batting on a different wicket," Green said of his veteran partner. Despite struggling against teh pink ball, Green was impressed with his teammates having left the West Indies 1-16 to start the day's play tomorrow. "We just wanted to give them a tricky last 45 minutes at the end and to get them one down is really crucial," he added.

Bangladesh beats Sri Lanka by 8 wickets as Tamim's 73 not out helps clinch T20 series

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Tanzid Hasan Tamim's career-best half-century backed Bangladesh's eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka to clinch their three-match T20 series 2-1 on Wednesday. Sri Lanka won the first game by seven wickets and Bangladesh came back with a massive 83-run win to level the series. Sri Lanka scored a mediocre 132-7 in their 20 overs after captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Bangladesh replied with 133-2 with 21 deliveries to spare. Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the first ball of their innings when Sri Lankan fast bowler Nuwan Thushara trapped Parvez Hossain Emon lbw. Tamim and captain Litton Das held the Bangladesh innings together sharing a 74-run partnership for the second wicket in just 50 deliveries. Das made 32 before being caught by Kusal Perera off spin bowler Kamindu Mendis. Tamim and Towhid Hridoy joined in an unbroken 59-run stand and saw their team through to victory. Tamim finished with 73 not out to beat his previous best Twenty20 international score of 67 made against Zimbabwe last year. He hit six sixes and a boundary during his 47-ball innings. Hridoy remained unbeaten on 27. Earlier, Bangladesh off spin bowler Mehedi Hasan took a career best 4-11. Sri Lanka started its innings aggressively scoring 14 runs in the first over. However, Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam dismissed in-form batter Kusal Mendis (6) in the last ball of the over having him caught at deep-square-leg by Hridoy. Kusal Perera was out in the first ball edging Mehedi Hasan to Tamim at slip. Dinesh Chandimal also failed, being dismissed for 4 runs trying an aggressive shot against Mehedi to be caught by Jaker Ali. Asalanka (3) was stuck on the crease and played the wrong line against Mehedi and was bowled. Mehedi caught Pathum Nissanka, the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 46 runs, off his own bowling. He bettered his previous best bowling figures of 4-13 against the West Indies. Kamindu Mendis attempted to increase Sri Lanka's scoring rate with 21 runs in 15 deliveries while Dasun Shanaka remained not out on 35 off 25 deliveries. He hit 21 runs out of 22 scored by Sri Lanka in their last over. ___ AP cricket:

Billy McFarland sells Fyre Festival brand on eBay for $245K. See what the buyer will get.

Fyre Festival will soon be in different hands as the infamous music festival sold for $245,300 on eBay this week. Billy McFarland, the festival's founder and owner, launched a live eBay auction for the "iconic" brand, trademarks, intellectual property and social media assets on July 8. After 175 bids from 42 bidders, the festival sold for $245,300 on Tuesday, July 15. The winning bidder has not been announced. "Fyre Festival is just one chapter of my story, and I'm excited to move onto my next one," McFarland wrote in a social media statement on Tuesday. Who bought Fyre Festival? It is unclear who placed the winning bid for Fyre Festival, as eBay presents anonymous names during auctions for buyer safety. Fyre Festival has also not shared the name of the winning bidder. A Fyre Festival spokesperson did not provide additional information outside of McFarland's statement when contacted by USA TODAY on Wednesday, July 16. What did the auction include? According to the eBay listing, the sale included: Brand name Registered trademarks and intellectual property Official social media accounts (including verified Instagram) Comprehensive marketing assets (photos, videos, graphic templates and advertisement archives) Domains (websites) Caribbean festival location option (with full support from elected island leadership) Behind-the-scenes content and documentary footage Emails and text lists Artist and talent relationships Extensive media coverage archive Access to core team (optional) What are people saying? Social media users didn't hesitate to share their thoughts on the eBay sale. "Is the next move where you get a job?" one Instagram user commented on McFarland's statement. "I'm confused by what he's even selling. Just the logo? They never did anything," another user wrote. Though some commenters were more positive. "Can't wait to see the new Fyre owner's vision for the brand!" a user wrote. What is Fyre Festival? Fyre Festival first gained traction in 2017. The two-week music and arts festival in the Bahamas, was promoted by influencers like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber and ticketholders were promised performances from acts like Blink-182 and Migos. However, upon arrival, festival-goers learned that the artists had canceled. Due to poor Caribbean weather, the festival was essentially washed out, with the promised luxury accommodations and gourmet food nowhere to be found. In the end, attendees only stayed one night before they were evacuated. In 2018, McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison for engaging in several fraudulent schemes related to the festival, including defrauding investors out of $26 million and more than $100,000 in fraudulent ticket-selling schemes. The festival inspired two documentaries, Netflix's "Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened" and Hulu's "Fyre Fraud." As part of his sentencing, McFarland agreed to pay $26 million in restitution to those who attended the first Fyre Festival in the Bahamas in 2017. The eBay listing states that a "portion of the proceeds" from the sale will be used for this. Upon his release, McFarland began to promote Fyre Festival 2, a second attempt at the festival. But problems quickly arose, as tickets starting at $1,400 promised luxury accommodations off the coast of Mexico, despite Mexican government officials claiming they weren't working with the festival at all. After a venue change – to an entirely different island – just weeks before the festival was to begin, McFarland called it off. "For Fyre Festival 2 to succeed, it's clear that I need to step back and allow a new team to move forward independently, bringing the vision to life on this incredible island," McFarland said in an April statement. As of July 16, McFarland claims Fyre Festival is working with "several Caribbean destinations" interested in hosting the festival. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. The creator of Fyre Festival revealed that he sold his brand on eBay, months after announcing its eventual sale. The highest bid of the 175 that came in was a cool $245,300 on Tuesday, July 15. Per NBC, the businessman livestreamed the auction and said, "Damn. This sucks, it's so low," to the bid that came in just under $250K. The unknown buyer now owns the "FYRE Festival – Iconic Brand, Trademarks, IP, Social Media Assets, and More," per the listing. McFarland, 33, shared an update on the sale on Instagram via what appears to be a Notes app screenshot. "I would like to congratulate the winning bidder in the FYRE Festival IP auction on eBay. I look forward to working with them to begin the process to finalize the sale." The disgraced businessman called the festival "one chapter of my story" and said he's "excited to move on to my next one." The social media post claimed that the auction was the "most-watched non-charity listing on eBay" while it was live. McFarland said that this proves "attention is currency, and views are the root of attention." McFarland told followers that his next project is "coming soon." For those who missed out on bidding on the infamous brand, you can still buy Fyre Fest merch. McFarland launched the Fyre Festival experience in 2017, promising attendees who paid upwards of $1,500 per ticket luxurious accommodations and celebrity guests, including influencers and musicians. However, those who traveled to the Bahamas were met with underwhelming stays and a lack of talent. The festival and its subsequent fallout were the subject of the Netflix documentary FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened and Hulu's documentary Fyre Fraud. McFarland was found guilty of two counts of wire fraud and served four years in prison from 2018 to 2022 for his involvement in the festival. In 2024, McFarland announced that Fyre Fest 2 was in the works. "We have a private island off the coast of Mexico in the Caribbean, and we have an incredible production company who's handling everything from soup to nuts," he said during a September appearance on Today. Though final details such as talent and location were in the works, McFarland claimed he had already sold 100 $500 tickets and had packages lined up costing up to $1 million. McFarland said the festival's second iteration was slated to take place in late May on Isla Mujeres. However, the Isla Mujeres tourism board stated in February that there were no permits requested by McFarland or his company for the event. "We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist," they said at the time. In April, he updated fans that the event would take place in Playa del Carmen, which also denied any involvement in the festival. Read the original article on People
