
Lindt's price hikes hit volumes even as European sales boost outlook
Despite this, CEO Adalbert Lechner said the maker of Lindor chocolate balls planned to raise prices again next year, albeit not as much as in 2025.
Shoppers continued to bear the brunt of high cocoa prices in the first half of the year as Lindt raised prices of its products by 15.8%. Its organic sales grew 11.2% in the period.
"Organic growth was exceptionally strong in Europe but relatively weak in North America. Assuming similar ... cocoa-price driven pricing in all regions, one wonders on the volume development in North America," analysts from Baader Helvea said in a note.
While Europe recorded organic growth of 17.7% in the first half, a weak consumer sentiment in North America weighed on sales there, resulting in just 3.6% growth.
The premium chocolate maker's shares fell around 7% by midday local time, on track for their biggest single-day drop since March 2020.
Lindt expects market growth in North America to accelerate in the second half of 2025, boosted by stronger orders, some of which it has already booked, Lechner told analysts in a conference call.
However, sales growth in Europe will likely normalize compared to the past six months, he added.
The company now expects organic growth of 9-11% this year, after previously guiding for 7-9%.
Lower volumes and high cocoa costs also weighed on its earnings, with half-year operating profit falling 11% to 259.2 million Swiss francs ($325.2 million), below market expectations based on LSEG data.
London cocoa futures (.LCCc2), opens new tab have nearly halved after reaching record highs in 2024, but remain clearly above the historical average.
Lindt continues to evaluate its global sourcing strategy ahead of the expected imposition of new U.S. tariffs on August 1, a company spokesperson told Reuters.
It had said in March it would supply chocolate made in Europe to Canada to avoid reciprocal tariffs on U.S. goods, but later said it had not adapted the strategy yet.
Lindt produces 95% of the chocolates it sells in the U.S. at its five factories in the country, which also supply less than half of the products sold in Canada.

India's Nayara exports first gasoline since sanctions, sources say
NEW DELHI/SINGAPORE, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Russia-backed Indian refiner Nayara Energy has exported its first gasoline cargo since the privately-owned company was sanctioned by the European Union on July 18, according to four shipping sources and LSEG data. The tanker Tempest Dream, carrying about 43,000 metric tons (363,350 barrels) of gasoline, sailed on Monday, according to the sources and LSEG shipping data. The vessel, sanctioned by Britain in June, is headed to Sohar, Oman, shipping data showed, although buyer details could not be verified. Mumbai-based Nayara Energy did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. A second vessel, the Sard, is currently at the western Indian port of Vadinar used by Nayara, set to lift about 43,000 tons of diesel, according to two sources and LSEG shipping data. Nayara has been forced to reduce crude runs at its 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Vadinar due to difficulties in obtaining ships and selling fuel from the port in the wake of the sanctions, Reuters has reported. Nayara, which runs 6,600 fuel stations in India, has approached state fuel retailers for domestic sale of products, industry sources have said. It recently used tanker Leruo to move about 43,000 tons of diesel to Mundra port in western India, data from traders and Kpler shiptracking showed. The Leruo and Sard have been sanctioned by the EU since July and May respectively.

BP to review assets and costs as profit beats expectations
LONDON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - BP (BP.L), opens new tab will review its portfolio of assets and consider further cost cuts as part of a drive to do better for shareholders, the oil major said on Tuesday, as it reported a second-quarter profit that easily beat expectations. Under pressure to improve profitability, not least from activist investor Elliott, CEO Murray Auchincloss earlier this year announced plans to sell $20 billion of assets through to 2027, reduce spending and share buybacks, and cut costs. On Tuesday, he signalled further action might follow, without giving details. "We will conduct a thorough review of our portfolio of businesses to ensure we are maximizing shareholder value moving forward – allocating capital effectively. We are also initiating a further cost review," Auchincloss said. "BP can and will do better for its investors.' BP has a target to cut costs by $4-$5 billion from 2023 levels by the end of 2027, of which it has achieved $1.7 billion, it said. The company posted a second-quarter underlying replacement cost profit, or adjusted net income, of $2.4 billion, down 14% from last year's $2.8 billion, but easily beating the average $1.8 billion in a company-provided poll of analysts. Its quarterly dividend will rise to 8.32 cents from 8 cents in the first quarter and it will keep the pace of its share buyback programme, making a further $750 million of purchases by the time of its third-quarter results, it said. BP's shares have markedly lagged peers since its 2020 foray into renewables under previous CEO Bernard Looney. Since Auchincloss's strategy revamp in February, BP's shares have lost around 3.5%, compared with rises of around 2.4% for rivals Shell (SHEL.L), opens new tab and Exxon (XOM.N), opens new tab, as of Monday.

Hugo Boss reports Q2 operating profit beat to expectations
