
Samsung Galaxy Watch owners may have to pay extra for health features soon
If you've got a Samsung smartphone, a Galaxy Watch is the perfect companion. And, like most smartwatches, they're great for fitness tracking, counting plenty of metrics. Or at least that's what they used to do. Samsung has seemingly decided it doesn't quite make enough money off Galaxy Watch owners yet.
Samsung confirmed it is now 'exploring' the idea of locking some of its Galaxy Watch health features behind a paywall, with a new premium subscription tier for the Samsung Health app.
This was confirmed during an interview with CNET, in what may or may not have been a slip up. While Samsung hasn't officially launched anything yet, let's not pretend we don't see where this is going. The idea is that new Galaxy Watches will come with all the advanced coaching tools unlocked – lucky you if you're planning to buy fresh. Everyone else will have to shell out extra.
Garmin did the exact same thing with its Connect+ service, and the backlash was biblical. You'd think companies might learn from that sort of community outrage, but clearly there's something intoxicating about recurring revenue that angers users. What started as a premium feature or two quickly became a pattern where existing users found their once-free features getting gradually sealed behind a subscription. It's the old slow-boil tactic.
While Samsung may decide not to move forwards with this subscription, I sadly don't think that'll be the case. I can see them drip feeding a few enticing metrics dressed up as 'AI coaching' or 'personalised insights' for extra. Even though they're the same graphs you got for free last year with your Galaxy Watch.
There are plenty of fitness trackers with subscriptions, Whoop is a prime example. But there, you're not shelling out for the hardware first. And, crucially, you know this is the case going into it – you're not getting the rug pulled. We'll let you know what Samsung decides to do.

You see, this thing is more like a pocket-sized clinic you strap to your wrist. With the MG, Whoop has taken its signature screenless design and sprinkled in medical-grade ECG and daily blood pressure estimates. These features transform what was once a simple exercise recovery tool into what feels like the most advanced tracker you can buy. Yet all its smarts come at a price – every month. There's a certain thrill in waking up to a fresh batch of numbers that genuinely matter, rather than just another simple sleep-stage chart. Still, between certain strap restrictions, occasional tracking blind spots, and the hefty subscription, it's far from perfect. Design & build: Slim Jim At first glance, the Whoop MG is virtually indistinguishable from its sibling, the Whoop 5.0. The only differences are the slightly chunkier conductive clasp and an LED status light. The most standout design choice here is the lack of a screen. Unlike almost every other fitness tracker available, you can only see your readings in the companion app. Ordinarily, I'd want to see metrics on my wrist. But in Whoop's case, I think the lack of a screen is a worthwhile feature. Weighing a mere 27g, it's light enough that I mostly forgot it was there, even under shirtsleeves. That said, it did take me about a week to get used the wearable on my non-watch wearing wrist. But that's down to my own preferences rather than the Whoop. Its IP68 rating (up to 10m) means it shrugged off showers, hand-washing, and swims in hotel pools. Like with a traditional smartwatch, you can swap out the straps to find something more stylish. Whoop even offers ankle straps, bicep bands, and underwear (that idea makes me squirm) that holds the Whoop sensor in body locations where it can get a reading. That's ideal if you want to conceal the device when you need to dress up smart – something I cannot say about the Apple Watch. Personally I stuck with the wrist, but it's good to know that I have options should I need it. But there's a problem. Only the included SuperKnit Luxe band lets you use ECG and Heart Screener functions. If you swap to a cheaper fabric or bicep band and you're back to basic PPG tracking. This is down to how you take the readings, so it's not exactly Whoop's fault. But it doesn't seem right that if you wear it elsewhere you only get half the functionality. Fit and finish are spot-on. The smooth aluminium shell feels premium against skin, and the adjustable clasp snaps shut with a reassuring click. However, this shell is quite flimsy – I managed to accidentally bend it while taking the strap off. Speaking of, I found myself adjusting the strap tightness a lot in the first few days. Too loose and ECG readings failed, too tight and my wrist ached by afternoon. Once dialled in, comfort was exceptional throughout daily life and any activity. Health & fitness: A lean, mean tracking machine The Whoop MG really can track just about everything under the sun. That includes metrics like exercise strain and recovery to ECG readings, blood-pressure estimates, sleep stages, skin temperature and more. It combines optical PPG sensors, electrical ECG electrodes, and software algorithms to deliver daily health snapshots, on-demand heart screening, and predictive pressure models. You can view all of these readings in the app at any time. Strain tracking remains the bread and butter of the Whoop ecosystem. It's Whoop's proprietary metric for quantifying your total exertion each day, on a scale from 0 to 21. It combines cardiovascular load (time spent in different heart-rate zones) with all your other movement movement. So walking around the shops counts, even though it's not a workout. Recovery is Whoop's measure of how ready your body and mind are to tackle that strain again, calculated each morning as a percentage. It blends four pillars: heart-rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate (RHR), sleep performance, and respiratory rate – then benchmarks them against your personal baseline. I've seen my Recovery scores adjust wildly, being affected by sleep, travel, and alcohol. You can see which specific reading is causing a dip, and use the Whoop Coach to explain more thoroughly. Where Whoop really shines is the dialogue between strain and recovery. Based on yesterday's strain and today's recovery, the app recommends an Optimal Strain target. So if you've done a heavy workout the day before, Whoop might tell you to take it easy the next day, or to do some light activity to boost recovery. I've found these personalised insights remarkably hard to argue with. Working hard on a red day always felt like a mistake, and on green days the extra oomph usually translated into better workouts. Then we come to my biggest complaint about the Whoop MG: auto-detection. Let's start with the easy stuff. It managed to detect long runs or walks I went on pretty reliably, but shorter bursts under fifteen minutes often slipped through the net. But that's about it. Most of my other activity involves strength training, which Whoop really struggled to detect. To avoid manual logging (so my workouts counted), I continued to wear my Apple Watch. The Whoop app syncs with Apple Health, so automatically grabs your workouts. It doesn't grab any of the data, mind, so that's all down to Whoop. For strength training, there's an extra step you can take in the Whoop app to add your sets so it can calculate your muscle strain. It sounds great, in theory, but I seldom found myself using it thanks to the manual inputting required. But just how reliable was the Whoop MG? For the most part, I found that its heart rate readings were almost identical to that of my Apple Watch, confirmed with a chest strap. This means your calorie and strain calculations are going to use some pretty accurate data. But, I got some mixed results in two key areas. My step reading was an area that seemed slightly fishy. Counting to 1000 steps (yes, I really counted), my Apple Watch Ultra almost nailed it with a reading of 1006, but the Whoop struggled to count them all at around 950. I guess that underestimating is better than overestimating, but it's a not insignificant amount. And since I'm hot on step tracking, it was particularly annoying for me. The other area was the VO2 Max estimation. Whoop's reading was wildly higher than my Apple Watch Ultra's – almost a difference of 15ml/kg/min. To try and work out which was more reliable, I used the Cooper Run test. This showed that the Whoop was overestimating my VO2 Max (slightly high) while the Apple Watch was underestimating it – with the true reading somewhere in between. Other fitness features: What can't it do? Whoop's Healthspan feature took about three weeks to settle on a reliable 'Whoop Age.' Mine was a surprisingly encouraging 3 years younger than my actual age, once my routine normalised. If you've used a Garmin watch, this feature is similar to the Fitness Age – though I'd argue Whoop's visualisation of longevity metrics feels more intuitive. It tells you exactly which factors are affecting your Healthspan, and shows you what you can do about it. I found it to be a very motivating way of presenting data and insights. ECG readings are delightfully straightforward. You just touch both electrodes on the SuperKnit clasp, count down 30 seconds, and the app confirms whether your ticker is behaving or if it spotted any irregularities. It's an almost identical process to holding down the crown on my Apple Watch Ultra. It's FDA-cleared and impressively robust, but utterly manual. This is no different to any other fitness tracker, but I found myself rarely using the feature. Regular prompts might be a helpful addition here. The blood-pressure estimates impressed me most of all, as someone that suffers from high blood pressure. Thanks, genetics. After three cuff-based calibrations (I used my Withings BPM Connect), the Whoop MG began tracking (it's more like estimating, really) my blood pressure. It only does this overnight, so you'll have to wait until each morning to check your readings. Consistently, I found that the algorithm tracked my blood pressure within 3 mmHg of my manual readings. It's not a replacement for a proper machine, but as far as wellness features go, having a ballpark figure without an inflatable cuff is ideal. I'm led to believe that every time you upload additional manual readings it improves what the algorithm spits out. Just bear in mind that errant calibration or wildly fluctuating pressure could send your metrics haywire. Interface: Home-page hero The Whoop companion app is one of the best designed and most intuitive apps out of all the fitness trackers I've used. The home screen gives you readings for Sleep, Strain, and Recovery – with access to their dashboards just a tap away. Integration with Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect means runs logged in on your smartwatch or Strava appear in Whoop's strain tally – no manual imports required. Daily Outlook, powered by GPT-4, was a much more useful feature than I first thought. It delivers a morning briefing of yesterday's key takeaways, the weather forecast, and personalised activity suggestions. I found it works particularly well when you combine it with the Journal feature that asks you questions about your day (like your caffeine intake, etc). I've loaded my Journal up with plenty of questions to get some thorough insights. There are over 160 lifestyle inputs to pick from! It's a truly clever feature – spotting that my HRV (and therefore Recovery score) was low after drinking a pint the night before, for example. Advice can feel generic at times ('consider a light session') rather than pinpointed suggestions based on my activity history. But for the most part, I really like this feature. I just wish it automatically sent these outlooks rather than firing up a painfully slow chatbot page. My biggest complaint about Whoop's companion app is the lack of a simple search bar. Finding specific data points can feel like sifting through a haystack at times. For example, all your regular heart metrics are on the home page if you scroll down, but you need to head to the Health page to see the blood pressure readings. It was definitely somewhat confusing at first. Battery life & charging: It just keeps going Credit to Whoop: the MG delivers a rock-solid two weeks of battery life, even with occasional ECG readings and round-the-clock PPG monitoring. In just over a month of testing, I only had to charge the Whoop twice from the 82% it was delivered on. I'm truly impressed by this thing's reluctance to die. Charging remains delightfully painless. The wireless charger clips on without you even noticing, and a full charge takes just under two hours. A single hour on the pad nets you about seven days of use, which is plenty if your routine includes nightly top-ups on your bedside table. You juice up the charger via a USB-C port, and the switch to a braided USB-C cable was appreciated. Whoop MG verdict The Whoop MG is a polished evolution of Whoop's screenless fitness tracker. It's been elevated into quasi-medical territory with ECG and algorithmic blood-pressure tracking, and I love all the metrics it spits out. The hardware is understated yet feels robust; the app remains a triumph of clarity over clutter. But the cost of admission is hard to swallow: $359/£349 per year for Whoop Life. Before the Whoop 5.0 and MG were released earlier in 2025, the previous 4.0 model came out in 2021. So you might end up using this thing for around four years – which is most $1500/£1400 in total. Other manual quirks, like strap restrictions and questionable auto-tracking, also temper the experience. If you live and breathe fitness metrics, crave distraction-free data, and your bank balance can handle a luxury subscription, the MG is as good as it gets. For everyone else, the Whoop 5.0 on the Peak plan likely delivers 90 per cent of the value at a fraction of the cost. The one condition attached to awarding this thing the crown of best fitness tracker I've used? The fact I've still got to wear my Apple Watch for activity tracking. Samsung's Ultra foldable phone has an official release date, and it's really soon
If you've been waiting for Samsung to release its next bendy phones, your wait is almost over. Samsung is going to release its next folding phones in July 2025. This year, we're expecting an Ultra folding model for the first time, alongside regular refreshes in the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip line-up. The next Galaxy Unpacked event is happening on 9 July, which was previously leaked by Evleaks. The event's being held in-person in Brooklyn, New York for attendees. For anyone at home, they can tune into a livestream that goes live at 10am ET/3pm BST. Word is the new foldables will have upgraded cameras and some new AI software features. Samsung has also already confirmed the new devices will launch with One UI 8. Then there's the so-called Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ultra, which Samsung seems to be increasingly hinting at. Recent official announcements promise 'industry-leading hardware, cutting-edge performance and seamless AI integration optimised for the foldable format'. Whatever that means. While we're yet to get official confirmation on the names, I'd put money on them being called the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7. We may also finally get eyes on Samsung's long-rumoured tri-fold foldable, supposedly dubbed the Galaxy G Fold. It's been teased and rumoured for a while now, and this could finally be the year it trots onto the stage. Play And let's not forget the wrists. The Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic are also expected to make an appearance, which will be the perfect companion to the latest Galaxy smartphones. Although, the Watch Ultra 2 might be keeping a low profile until 2026. Based on past launches, pricing is likely to sit in high-end flagship territory – we're talking north of $1700/£1749 for the Fold 7, and closer to $999/£1049 for the Flip 7. Either way, we'll find out when Samsung's Unpacked event takes place on 9 July.

The LG G5 is the best and brightest OLED TV I've ever laid my eyes on – here's why

This 4K TV isn't simply slightly improved over its predecessor – it's a proper generational leap. The big upgrade is a new four-stack OLED panel, which adds an extra blue layer to crank up brightness and colour volume to frankly absurd levels. OLED TVs have always delivered perfect blacks and top-tier contrast. But brightness has historically been the one area where LED-based TVs had it beat. Not anymore. LG's G5 absolutely torches last year's G4 and Samsung's latest QD-OLED efforts. Perhaps that's no surprise, given it sits near the top of LG's 2025 line-up; available in 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, and 97in screen sizes, is it worth the steep price over the already-excellent C5? If you care about HDR performance or if you just want the best picture quality currently available, then yes. Here's how the 65in model fared in around two months of having my eyes glued to it. Design & build: Barely even there The G5's design is pretty familiar. If you've seen the G4 or even the G3, you know what you're getting. It's a minimalist wall of screen framed by the thinnest of bezels and a stylish silver trim. It's not a radical departure, but honestly, it doesn't need to be. LG calls this a 'Gallery' TV (hence the G), and it fits the bill – clean lines, discreet branding, and a build that's as happy wall-mounted as it is on a stand. That stand, by the way, is an optional extra in some regions. LG has designed this TV to go on your wall. But if you do get the stand (as I did), it's a solid pedestal affair with adjustable height. That's particularly useful if you want to squeeze a soundbar underneath without blocking the screen – which is exactly what I did. The wall mount, meanwhile, is a zero-gap type that keeps the TV flush against the wall, giving it that showroom finish. The TV is just 2.4cm thick across the board – no chunky power bulges here – and while it's heavier than the ultra-slim C5, it still feels remarkably svelte. Around the back, all the ports are side-facing and sensibly placed, which helps keep cable management tidy. There are plastic covers to clip over all the wires and keep things tidy once you're hooked up, but I found these a little fiddly. Features & connectivity: What more could you ask for? LG has thrown every bit of tech into the G5 that it possibly could. The star of the show is, of course, the new panel. That four-layer tandem OLED stack delivers serious brightness gains over previous generations – with a peak output of 4000 nits. Whether or not it gets to that max depends on content and mode – but either way, you absolutely notice how bright this TV in real-world use. From vibrant HDR film highlights to well-lit gaming sessions, it just looks better than anything I've seen. There's no other way to put it. Under the hood is the Alpha 11 AI Processor Gen 2. While its name sounds like something fitting of a robot, its job is to handle picture processing. It's very good at it. Features like AI Picture Pro and Dynamic Tone Mapping work together to maintain detail and colour fidelity even as brightness ramps up. If you value what you're watching you'll probably switch the former off, but the processor still powers the incredible colour mapping and upscaling. There's also AI Sound Pro, which – despite good intentions – can't quite rescue the TV's undercooked speaker setup. As per usual, you'll be better off pairing this TV with some home cinema speakers or a soundbar. The 60W 4.2-channel system has Dolby Atmos support, but if you're expecting cinema-style immersion or even just decent midrange punch, you'll be disappointed. Voices sound recessed, and while there's some bass presence, it's more of a polite rumble than a thump. Cinema mode is the only one that gets close to listenable – but even that feels constrained. Round back, you'll find four HDMI 2.1 ports, all full-fat 48Gbps bandwidth, support for 4K at 165Hz (or 120Hz with Dolby Vision), VRR, ALLM, G-Sync and FreeSync Premium. Input lag is supposed to come in under 10ms with Game Optimizer Boost enabled, putting the G5 right at the top of the responsiveness leaderboard. That's great news for gamers. There's also Wi-Fi 6E, three USB ports, optical audio, Ethernet, and all the usual smart home integration. This includes LG's ThinQ platform and Matter compatibility, which plays nice with other gadgets in your home. The new Magic Remote unfortunately now places an AI button front and centre, and moves the input selector into some weird ThinQ submenu that requires holding down the Home button. It's irritating and unnecessary, as if LG decided ease-of-use was optional. You do still get the floating cursor if that's your thing, but the UI is more fiddly than fun these days. Honestly, I used to really like LG's webOS interface – but I can't say the same thing in 2025 (more on this below). Which remote you get depends on where you live in the world, too. The US gets a fancy, slimmed down version with fewer buttons, but some European locations stick with the old design because of laws requiring TV remotes to have number buttons (yes, really). Interface: AI + ads = irritating LG's webOS used to be the gold standard for smart TV operating systems: quick, intuitive, and largely free of clutter. The G5's iteration isn't a massive departure from last year's version, so existing LG TV owners should feel right at home. But as of 2025, it's starting to feel like LG is trying to do too much. The first thing you'll notice is the home screen. It's laid out in customisable rows filled with apps, user profiles, inputs, and suggestions, all punctuated by an intrusive banner ad that refuses to go. This ad real estate has only grown in recent years, and it still feels like a slap in the face on a TV at this price. What you do get is access to virtually every streaming service you'd expect – Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, regional catch-up services, and more – all neatly presented and quick to load. User profiles have seen a meaningful improvement, with voice recognition that automatically switches users based on who's talking. This is ideal for households where everyone has different streaming habits or picture preferences – and it's surprisingly accurate, assuming you're not trying to impersonate your partner. Elsewhere, webOS 25 continues to double down on AI. Sigh. There's a voice-controlled chatbot (yes, really) baked right in, powered by a large language model that can interpret commands like 'make the picture warmer' or 'I can't hear dialogue.' To give LG credit, it actually works quite well most of the time. Sometimes it fumbles commands or defaults to generic suggestions, but when it hits, it's helpful – especially for users who don't want to root around in menus. As I mentioned, the G5's Magic Remote has been redesigned to support this AI-centric approach. The input button is now a long-press function hidden behind the ThinQ hub. If you want to quickly jump from your Blu-ray player to your Xbox, it's now a faff. There's no excuse for this kind of basic UX regression. LG making the TV a smart home hub is nice in theory, but in practice, it's a feature you probably won't use. Performance: Blown away by brightness This is the bit that matters. And here, the G5 absolutely delivers. If you've been waiting for OLED to finally crack the brightness ceiling, this is the TV that does it. Whether it's a 4K Blu-ray of Top Gun: Maverick, a Dolby Vision binging stream of Severance, or a high-end Xbox Series X title like Call of Duty, the G5 renders every frame with jaw-dropping dynamism and clarity. Trust me, I tested them all. Filmmaker Mode is the picture setting you want here – colour accuracy is superb, motion is clean without looking artificial, and dynamic range is in another league. You'll notice just how bright this thing gets during particularly bright scenes or those with lots of white (I'm looking at you, Severance). In particularly bright HDR sequences, like the scramjet blast in Top Gun, the G5 hits retina-roasting peaks while still maintaining colour integrity. Whites are pure, not tinged with green (as they are on other TVs), and black levels remain perfect – the pixel just switches off. Simple, beautiful. The way the G5 handles extremely dark scenes and shadow detail set it apart. There's gradation and subtlety here that other TVs struggle to match. We found similar things on the C5, so this might be partly down to LG's processing as well. Side-by-side with the C5, the G5's advantages are more subtle in SDR or standard HDR streaming content, but crank up a properly mastered 4K disc or high-bit-rate stream and the difference is immediate. Colours pop harder, highlights sparkle more, and overall image depth feels more three-dimensional. Gaming is where the G5 flexes hardest. Motion clarity, HDR consistency, and input responsiveness are all top-tier. The Game Optimizer mode offers granular control, and support for 165Hz makes it a dream pairing for high-end PCs. Frankly, if you're a gamer or film lover with cash to burn, this is the best TV you can buy right now. LG G5 OLED verdict The LG G5 OLED is possibly the best TV I've ever used. It's a genuine leap forward for OLED tech, not just another annual refresh dressed up with buzzwords. If you care about picture quality – and let's be honest, you probably do, or you wouldn't be reading this – then this TV is a no-brainer. It nails HDR, handles motion brilliantly, upscales with precision, and makes games look breathtaking. The downsides? The speakers are fine at best, the new remote and interface is baffling, and the price is undeniably steep. But none of that overshadows the fact that this is a stunning bit of kit. Honestly, I'll (begrudgingly) put up with the software and remote to get these stunning visuals. I use an Apple TV and have a sound system, so they're not unavoidable issues. If you've got the cash and want a TV that makes everything else look dated, the G5 is worth every penny. Stuff Says… Score: 5/5 LG's G5 finally gives an OLED the one thing it's always lacked: a proper punch of brightness.
