Teenager Antonelli paying price for 'wrong steps' by Mercedes
LONDON - Mercedes have made mistakes in developing their Formula One car and teenage Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli's struggles are a consequence of that, according to technical director James Allison.
Antonelli, 18, finished third in Canada in June for his first F1 podium but has since failed to score.
He has had two retirements since Montreal as well as 17th in a sprint race in Belgium last Saturday and then 16th in Sunday's main grand prix.
The Italian, who took a sprint pole in Miami and is the sport's youngest ever race leader, has retired four times in the last seven rounds and admitted in Belgium he was lacking confidence in the car and not driving as he would like.
"I think he's, like the rest of us, massively fed up with a string of results that are well below what we were collectively achieving earlier in the year," Allison said in a Belgian race debrief on Tuesday.
"I hope he takes some solace from the fact that we tell him, and it's demonstrably a fact, that we have taken the wrong steps with the car, making our team less competitive, and that he is paying the price for that, as is George (Russell).
"If the car isn't where it needs to be, then it will be a struggle getting through the qualifying stages in your rookie season in F1."

Allison said it was "utterly clear" to everyone that the car needed to be better and Antonelli's fortunes would improve when it was.
"Hopefully he's listening to us as we say those reassuring words because we absolutely know that he is putting in the effort on his side of that bargain," he added.
Mercedes are third overall, 28 points behind second-placed Ferrari, with one win by Russell in Canada. Russell has been on the podium five times and is fourth overall with 157 points to Antonelli's 63.
Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, whose seat Antonelli took when the Briton moved to Ferrari, showed his support for the Italian after Saturday qualifying at Spa.
"He was telling me to keep my head up, and that it's normal to have bad weekends, and to just keep believing," the Italian told reporters.
Hamilton told Sky Sports television he could not imagine what the rookie was going through.
"He's been doing fantastic. But to be thrown in at the deep end at 18... he hadn't even had his driving licence when he first started racing," he said. REUTERS

Franklin Township police responded to a home in Pittstown at around 12:20 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a report about an unresponsive woman, according to a statement released Monday by the Hunterdon County prosecutors. Inside the home, officers found Lauren Semanchik, 33, and Tyler Webb, 29, both dead in what prosecutors described as a "targeted attack." Crime of Passion Lauren Semanchik X Investigators quickly identified Ricardo Santos, 45, a lieutenant with the New Jersey State Police and Semanchik's former boyfriend, as a potential suspect and launched a search to trace him. Shortly after the search was underway, Santos was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his 2008 white Mercedes in Piscataway, roughly 50 miles from the crime scene, according to prosecutors. A semiautomatic pistol, suspected to be the weapon used in the killings, was found next to him. Investigators later learned that the night before the incident, Franklin Township police had responded to a 911 call reporting "audible gunshots and screaming" near Semanchik's home. However, officers were unable to determine the exact location of the sounds. Authorities also found out that Semanchik, a veterinarian, had installed surveillance cameras in her car after reporting that Santos had been stalking her. Video footage showed her car leaving her veterinary clinic in Long Valley at 5:25 p.m. on Friday. Footage from the rear camera captured Santos' Mercedes tailing Semanchik closely from her workplace to her home. She arrived at her home just before 6 p.m., and around ten minutes later, someone was seen coming out of the wooded area near her driveway. Roughly thirty minutes after that, Webb's car pulled up and parked beside Semanchik's vehicle, according to prosecutors. They said it looked as though "she was trying to run away" at the time she was killed. "She was shot in the back," said Semanchik's sister, Deanna. "She gave so much of her life to other people and she deserved so much better." The family described the disturbing chain of events that unfolded after Semanchik broke off her relationship with Santos in September 2024. Their relationship had lasted just three months before she ended it, but not long after, the state trooper began stalking and "harassing" her, according to the family. "She tried to block him many times and he continued to call her from restricted numbers. He showed up at her work, that's where the car was keyed," Deanna Semanchik told the outlet. "He put recording devices in her home, water in her gas tank. He harassed her left and right." Jeannine Semanchik, the victim's mother, said her daughter tried to alert authorities about her unstable ex-boyfriend, but no action was taken to ensure her safety. "A lot of agencies failed her. She tried to get restraining orders. Nobody called her back," Jeannine Semanchik said. Santos had earlier worked as a supervisor on Governor Phil Murphy's security team, according to CBS News. Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Brown
LONDON :Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American chief executive Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. "I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine," he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. "For sponsors, I think they'll bring more new to the table than take." Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although they faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. "Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport," he added. "I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that." Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The first new team since U.S.-owned Haas debuted in 2016 said in July they were already two thirds of the way towards a targeted headcount of 600 by next season and no longer even the smallest outfit.
