Breeding seahorses delay Weymouth harbour wall repairs

BBC News10-06-2025
A colony of breeding seahorses is delaying work to repair a crumbling harbour wall.Work to replace the walls around Weymouth Peninsula, Dorset, was due to begin in the winter but was halted due to "factors beyond the council's control".Now contractors must wait until the protected seahorses, which breed and raise their young in the nearby seagrass, move back into deeper water.Construction is expected to take 10 to 12 months, with completion expected in "mid-2026".
Inspections found the walls on the north east and north west side of the peninsula, which were built in 1977, were in "critical condition" and "at risk of failure".Dorset Council place services councillor Jon Andrews said: "Balancing economic progress with protecting what makes Dorset special isn't always easy, but it's a challenge we are determined to meet."Seahorses are special creatures and it's right that we do what we can to avoid disturbing them during their breeding season."

Post Office systems go down across Britain

By Published: | Updated: A major outage earlier hit customers at Post Office branches across Britain. People over the UK attempting to send out parcels this afternoon ran into trouble as systems crashed while they were in store. Outage reports for the Post Office shot up shortly before 3pm, according to DownDetector's tracker. Most of the problems were about a 'total blackout,' while others indicated there was a problem with the internet connection. It is not yet known what caused the outage, but the Post Office told Metro that it is 'not cyber related'. Post Office posted on X to warn people of the crash when it happened: 'We're aware of an outage impacting our branches. The issue is being worked on and things should be back to normal later this afternoon. Thanks for your patience.' The company said their systems were back up and running just before 4pm. Shortly after, a Post Office spokesperson said: 'There was a major outage across the Post Office estate this afternoon. 'We are pleased to announce that service has now been restored to branches. 'We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers and the operators of our branches.' But some customers were left furious with the outage and took to social media to share their disappointment. One woman said: 'Bro I walked 25mins to the post office in flip flops for them to tell me the system is down & come back tomorrow, bro can u just HAND IT TO ME.' Another added: 'No they are not back to normal! On the strength of your post I travelled again into Macclesfield only to find the post office at WH Smith still offline - system down. So - no- your services are not back to normal - unless you consider zero service normal?' A third wrote: 'The post office servers are down all over the UK. look at their twitter. I am unable to drop off parcels as they are CLOSED as unable to function.' One more chimed in: 'Hello, please can I arrange for my parcel that is stuck inside the post office to be delivered to my home? Been twice to collect it now and told both times 'system down' unhelpful employees and rude as always.' It comes after a spate of high-profile cyber incidents affecting the M&S and Co-op. M&S online orders were back in action six weeks after the cyber attack in April, which cost the company £300 million. Co-op admitted yesterday that all 6.5million people on its membership scheme had details stolen in the hack, which left some branch shelves empty.

Emergency services work to free pupils from coach after crash

Emergency services are working to free pupils from a school coach after it crashed on the way back from a day trip near Minehead, Somerset, police said. The 70-seater bus was involved in a collision on the A396 Cutcombe Hill, between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe, on Thursday. It was taking pupils back to Minehead Middle School when the incident happened, the PA news agency understands. It is unclear how many people have been injured and how seriously. Peter Prior-Sankey, director of local coach operator Ridlers, said: 'We were made aware of an incident involving one of our 70-seater vehicles at about 3.15pm this afternoon, understood to have taken place as a group of school pupils were returning from a day trip. 'We have since been liaising with both the school and the emergency services while we try to understand the extent of the incident. 'Everyone within the Ridlers team is of course deeply concerned and anxious to find out more detail – particularly concerning the welfare of the driver and passengers. 'While we wait for further information from police and other emergency teams, our hearts of course go out to the school pupils and to our driver. 'We will be doing everything possible to understand what has happened.' An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: 'Calls came in at about 3pm reporting a bus had left the road near the junction with Ashwell Lane and Steart Lane. 'Most of the passengers have been taken off the bus. ' Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are working to free the remaining occupants and South Western Ambulance Service are also on the scene. 'We have no confirmed information on the number of casualties or the level of injuries.' The police spokesperson said the emergency services have well-rehearsed plans for responding to such incidents and asked people to avoid the area. In a post on X, Rachel Gilmour, the MP for Tiverton and Minehead, said: 'I have heard news about a distressing road traffic incident around Wheddon Cross this afternoon. 'Emergency services are present, so please give them space to work. 'My thoughts are with all involved in the incident.' The Transport Secretary said she is being kept updated on the crash. In a post on X, Heidi Alexander said: 'I'm aware of the serious incident involving a bus near Minehead, Somerset. 'My thoughts are with all those involved. 'The emergency services are on scene, and I am receiving regular updates on the situation.'
