Black national anthem divides fans before NFL Draft

Fox News25-04-2025
Before the Tennessee Titans officially selected Cam Ward with the No. 1 pick of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, the Black national anthem was performed on stage in Green Bay.
The James Weldon Johnson Foundation's "National Hymn Choir" sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing." NFL fans waiting for the draft to begin took it all in before NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Green Bay Packers greats and Lil' Wayne came out on stage.
Social media were left bewildered by the rendition.
The Black national anthem has been a mainstay for NFL events since the 2020 season, following a summer of racial tensions across the U.S. The song has been performed at Super Bowls and draft events.
Ledisi, a Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, performed the song before Super Bowl LIX before the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NAACP began to promote "Lift Every Voice and Sing" as the Black national anthem in 1917.
Ward was the No. 1 pick in the draft after a solid performance with the Miami Hurricanes in his final season in college. The Jacksonville Jaguars then traded up with the Cleveland Browns to select Travis Hunter.
The New York Giants selected Abdul Carter, and the New England Patriots took Will Campbell. The Browns decided to take Mason Graham to round out the top five.

Packers Blockbuster Trade Proposal Lands $31 Million Pass Rusher

Packers Blockbuster Trade Proposal Lands $31 Million Pass Rusher originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With less than three weeks until training camp begins, General Manager Brian Gutekunst still has time to make a few final additions before the Green Bay Packers resume team activities. Still, that should not stop him from seeking upgrades during the preseason if the right opportunity comes along. Advertisement If the Packers were to make any additional acquisitions, they would most likely come on the defensive side of the ball. The team did a solid job this offseason of surrounding quarterback Jordan Love with more talent—both in the receiving corps and along the offensive line. However, on defense, there is still a noticeable void: the Packers lack a true No. 1 cornerback and are missing a superstar-caliber pass rusher to anchor the defensive line. Green Bay is betting on internal growth, trusting that Jeff Hafley and DeMarcus Covington can elevate the defense through development. Still, it would not hurt to explore a few additional options—whether on the free-agent market or via potential trades with other NFL teams. With that in mind, AtoZ Sports writer Wendell Ferreira, along with Colts beat writer Destin Adams and Saints beat reporter Adam Holt, proposed a blockbuster three-team trade involving the Packers, Giants, and Raiders. "The Packers didn't invest much in the edge defender position this offseason, despite underwhelming production from the group in 2024. Even though general manager Brian Gutekunst is not exactly aggressive in the trade market, Kayvon Thibodeaux is the type of player he would consider," Wendell wrote. "The edge rusher is young, plays at a premium position, is a former top-5 pick, and has a track record of solid production in the NFL. The Packers would absorb $4.978 million in 2025 and $14.751 million in 2026, which is an excellent value." Wendell also pointed out Romeo Doubs' contract situation, noting that it could influence Green Bay's decision to include him in a trade package. "Parting ways with Romeo Doubs might not be an easy decision, but he's entering the final year of his rookie deal, the Packers haven't wanted to give him an early extension, and his ceiling is limited," he wrote. "To make things fair, Green Bay would also send the Giants a fourth-round pick, but that's still a great net value to the roster." Advertisement Kayvon Thibodeaux recorded 21 sacks and 121 pressures in his first three seasons with the Giants. In 2024, New York traded for Brian Burns and then selected Abdul Carter third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. While Thibodeaux should still see some playing time in New York, the significant investments in Burns and Carter—both projected starters—could create a scenario where Thibodeaux becomes available for trade. Dolphins React to Major Tua Tagovailoa Announcement

Dolphins React to Major Tua Tagovailoa Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Dolphins' fanbase is buzzing with excitement on Fourth of July weekend following a major announcement that has cemented quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's status as a rising star in the NFL. Advertisement The Dolphins took to X to reveal that Tagovailoa has been ranked #91 on the exclusive NFL Top 100 Players of 2025 list, a testament to his growing impact despite a 2024-25 season hampered by injuries. The graphic shared by the team showcases Tagovailoa in a vibrant aqua jersey, holding a football with confidence, as the #91 ranking looms large. Tagovailoa, 27, is coming off a season in which he threw for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions to go along with a stellar 72.9% completion rate. His ability to lead the NFL in completion percentage last season despite missing six games due to injury underscores the world-class skill he possesses when healthy. Advertisement Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Vinlove-Imagn Images After a disastrous 2024-25 campaign in which the Dolphins went 8-9 and missed the playoffs, the team is desperate to reestablish themselves as contenders in the AFC. Under the witty leadership of head coach Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins have flashed signs of brilliance, including an 11-6 record in 2023 in a year where Tagovailoa threw for a career-high 4,624 yards. Fans reactions on X have been a mix of celebration and debate, with some hailing the ranking while others point to his injury history as a cause for concern. As the 2025 season approaches, this coveted ranking is just the beginning of what could be a stellar year for the young quarterback. A CFL team owns Shedeur Sanders' negotiation rights. Here's what that means

Shedeur Sanders is preparing for his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns after being selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders joined a crowded Browns quarterback room that was already comprised of 40-year-old veteran Joe Flacco, 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel. The four men are expected to battle both to be Cleveland's starting quarterback while also jockeying for position on the depth chart as whole. While much of the focus surrounding Sanders is about his first season in Cleveland, the Browns aren't the only professional football team that owns his rights. The Toronto Argonauts – a long-time member of the CFL – have Sanders on their negotiation list, meaning they are the only team that can sign the former Colorado quarterback should he ever want to play in the league. Here's what to know about the CFL's negotiation list and why Sanders is one of many young, NFL quarterbacks on it. Which CFL team owns rights to Shedeur Sanders? The Toronto Argonauts currently own the exclusive CFL negotiation rights to Sanders. Should the current Browns quarterback ever want to play in Canada, he would have to negotiate a contract with Toronto to make that happen. It isn't clear how long the Argonauts have owned Sanders' rights, as CFL teams are allowed to add college players to their negotiation lists. The league made the full negotiation lists public for the first time on Wednesday, July 2. EXCLUSIVE: Why did Shedeur Sanders slide in draft? NFL team execs give blunt views What is the CFL's negotiation list? Each of the CFL's nine teams maintains a negotiation list of "up to 45 players who are currently either unsigned or are playing in the NFL, in another professional league, or in college," according to the CFL's official website. Teams hold the exclusive CFL negotiating rights to the players included on their lists. Players can be added or removed from the list at any time, and teams are also allowed to trade the rights to players on their negotiation lists to other clubs within the league. Is Shedeur Sanders going to the CFL? Just because Sanders is included on one of the CFL's negotiation lists does not mean he is going to play in the league. It simply means the Argonauts will retain his CFL rights if he ever does decide to play north of the border. But if Sanders accomplishes his goal and carves out a long-term NFL career, he will not join the Canadian league. NFL ROOKIES TO WATCH: Ashton Jeanty headlines most explosive players in 2025 Other QBs on CFL's negotiation list Sanders is far from the only NFL quarterback on a CFL team's negotiation list. Many of the league's clubs stockpile the rights to high-end college quarterbacks and back-end NFL roster candidates in the hopes one will eventually decide to join their teams. Sanders is among the most notable, with Saskatchewan Roughriders stash Trey Lance – the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft – also being among the best-know candidates on the combined lists. Below is a look at the quarterbacks on the CFL's negotiation list for all nine teams, along with their alma maters or the most recent college program for which they played.
