Phillies Urged to Replace Zack Wheeler in Key Role After Big Game Turns Heads
The Philadelphia Phillies are enjoying the benefits of one of the best pitching rotations in the sport, but the emergence of a young starter could create a bit of a problem down the line.
In his fifth career season with the Phillies, Cristopher Sanchez has dominated to the tune of a 2.40 ERA and 145 strikeouts across 22 starts. The performance has placed him firmly in the conversation for the National League Cy Young Award, though he might have some competition from veteran teammate Zack Wheeler.
Now in his sixth season for the Phillies, Wheeler has a 2.64 ERA with 182 strikeouts across his own 22 starts so far.
As a result, it's difficult to say which starter in Philadelphia is having a better season. But after a big performance in a marquee matchup against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, former general manager Steve Phillips is giving the edge to Sanchez and said the young southpaw should replace Wheeler as the Phillies' first playoff starter.

"Their best pitcher right now is a young left-hander who went out and dominated yesterday the Detroit Tigers, who might be a World Series matchup," Phillips said in an MLB Network segment on Monday. "Cristopher Sanchez is the best starting pitcher right now for the Philadelphia Phillies and so, for me, he gets Game 1. And then, Joe Torre used to talk about how Game 2, how important that was, throw Zack Wheeler in that one. But give me Sanchez Game 1 to get off to a good start."
Anointing Sanchez as the Game 1 starter in a likely Phillies playoff run would mark a harsh replacement for Wheeler, despite the fact that he's enjoying a comparable season. Wheeler started the Phillies' first game in last year's National League Division Series against the New York Mets and he has a 2.18 ERA in 12 postseason appearances.
Given Wheeler's experience and production in the playoffs to date, it seems unlikely that Sanchez would really supplant him as the team's Game 1 starter. Ultimately, the Phillies should be happy to have two strong options in a likely postseason series. But depending on how the rest of the season shakes out, there's suddenly at least a possibility that Sanchez has emerged as the team's strongest ace option.

Detroit Tigers at Philadelphia Phillies odds, picks and predictions
The Detroit Tigers (64-47) and Philadelphia Phillies (62-47) play the second game of their 3-game series Saturday. First pitch from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia is set for 4:05 p.m ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Tigers vs. Phillies odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: Phillies lead 1-0 The Phillies edged the Tigers 5-4 Friday night, rallying with 2 runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead for good. LF Otto Kemp delivered an RBI double, followed by a 2B Bryson Stott RBI infield single. Philadelphia cashed as a -146 home favorite with the Over (7.5) hitting. The win keeps the Phillies holding a narrow half-game lead in the NL East. The Tigers saw their 4-game win streak end Friday despite a strong outing from SP Jack Flaherty (6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 7 K). Detroit's offense was highlighted by a 3-run homer from 2B Gleyber Torres and a solo shot by RF Wenceel Perez, but it wasn't enough to avoid the loss. Tigers at Phillies projected starters LHP Tarik Skubal vs. RHP Zack Wheeler Skubal (10-3, 2.09 ERA) is making his 22nd start. He has a 0.84 WHIP, 1.3 BB/9 and 11.5 K/9 through 133 2/3 innings. Wheeler (9-4, 2.56 ERA) is making his 22nd start. He has a 0.89 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9 and 11.6 K/9 through 133 2/3 innings. Tigers at Phillies picks and predictions Tigers 3, Phillies 2 Moneyline BET TIGERS (-110). It's tough to bet against Skubal right now. Despite Detroit's post-All-Star break struggles, the Tigers' ace continues to deliver, allowing just 5 earned runs over his last 5 starts. He's consistently given them a chance to win every fifth day. Offensively, Detroit has started to find its groove, hitting .277 with 10 home runs over the past 7 days. The Tigers have also been strong on the road, posting a 28-26 record away from Comerica Park -- one of just 7 MLB teams above .500 on the road this season. Meanwhile, Wheeler has been less consistent of late, going 0-1 and giving up 10 earned runs over his last 3 outings. With Skubal's dominance and the Tigers' improving lineup, Detroit presents strong value on the moneyline in this matchup, especially with favorable odds backing a team that's quietly dangerous on the road. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I'll take the better odds with the Tigers on the moneyline, rather than play with the run line. Over/Under With 2 strong starters on the mound, it's no surprise to see a low total for this matchup. While a pitcher's duel is expected, and the Under would be the lean, it's not a confident play. The trends don't offer much clarity; Skubal is 3-2-1 to the Over in his last 6 starts, the head-to-head Over/Under sits at 4-6 over the last 10 meetings, and both teams are 5-3-2 against the total in their last 10 games. With no strong edge on the total, the smarter move is to AVOID it altogether and keep your focus on the moneyline instead. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now!
