James Cameron taking a break from Avatar as he tackles 'new challenge'
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third instalment, is 'winding down' production with a trailer expected soon as the film is due out later this year.
Instead of starting on the fourth film – due out in 2029 – Cameron has revealed he's going to be adapting a new novel called The Devils.
In a statement on social media, the 70-year-old filmmaker has confirmed his production company Lightstorm Entertainment acquired the rights to author Joe Abercrombie's book.
Cameron and Abercrombie will be co-writing the script together for the fantasy story which was released just last month and became an instant bestseller.

He continued: 'But the freshness of the world and the characters in 'The Devils' finally got me off my butt to buy one of his books and partner with him to bring it to the screen.
'I can't wait to dig into this as I wind down on Avatar: Fire and Ash. It will be a joyful new challenge for me to bring these indelible characters to life.'
The Devils focuses on a special force of monsters tasked to save Europe from flesh-eating elves – with a plot like that, we're not surprised the esteemed director rushed to get involved.
Praising the filmmaker, Abercrombie said: 'I can't think of anyone better to bring this weird and wonderful monster of a book to the screen.'
With only four years to go before the as-yet-untitled Avatar 4, it's unclear if Cameron is planning to be hands-on for The Devils' entire production.
If he wasn't busy enough, he's also directing another novel adaptation; The Last Train From Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino.
There's also the illusive adaptation of Taylor Stevens' novel The Informationist that Lightstorm Entertainment purchased the rights to in 2012.
Dedicated film fans will remember that at the time Cameron said he'd direct it once Avatar was completed – we won't hold our breath on that one.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is slated for a December 2025 release with the sequels following in 2029 and 2031 respectively.
The previous instalment, Way of the Water, clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes but Cameron is promising that the follow-up will be even longer.
He told Empire magazine: 'In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2. The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character.
'So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.' Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.'
Script co-writer Amanda Silver seconded this feeling saying 'the characters needed to breathe.' More Trending
She said: 'These movies are a lot more than just propulsive plot and gorgeous spectacle. I mean, these are real characters.'
Cameron is feeling 'pretty good' about this next Avatar, having allowed a handful of people to screen the film already.
He previously told Stuff: 'I've shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been … it's definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far.
'We'll find out, you know, but I feel pretty good about it.'

James Cameron labels Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning triumph 'a moral cop out'
James Cameron has criticised Sir Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning blockbuster Oppenheimer after signing up to direct a film on the fallout at Hiroshima. Titanic and Avatar director Cameron, 70, is helming a screen adaptation of upcoming book Ghosts of Hiroshima. The book by Charles Pellegrino is based on 'years of forensic archaeology' alongside over 200 interviews with survivors of the atomic bomb dropping in August 1945 and their families. Discussing his approach for the upcoming film, Cameron shared his vision and how it differed quite drastically from that of Sir Christopher and his 2023 hit movie. Known for being outspoken, Cameron gave his frank opinion on what the film did – and didn't – cover and speculated as to why. 'It's interesting what he stayed away from. Look, I love the filmmaking, but I did feel that it was a bit of a moral cop out,' he told Deadline, adding that 'it's not like Oppenheimer didn't know the effects'. 'But I felt that it dodged the subject.' The scene shows Cillian Murphy as titular physicist J Robert Oppenheimer having a nightmare after seeing slides depicting casualties and the impact of his work, leading to him to imagine the face melting off a young woman who was played by Sir Christopher's daughter, Flora, in a cameo. However, despite its box office and awards success – grossing over $975million (£708m) and winning seven Oscars – Cameron is not the first to question the film's apparent reluctance to engage with the horrific outcome of its protagonist's work. The two bombs dropped on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki are thought to have killed between 150,000 and 246,000 people. Cameron added: 'I don't know whether the studio or Chris felt that that was a third rail that they didn't want to touch, but I want to go straight at the third rail. I'm just stupid that way.' Sir Christopher previously shared his reasons for choosing not to depict the bombings in detail, explaining: 'I think really, as a filmmaker, you can't be overly conscious about why you choose to do things. You have to run on instinct to a degree. 'But the feeling for me as a filmmaker was very strongly that to depart from Oppenheimer's experience would betray the terms of the storytelling.' He shared (via NBC) that Oppenheimer learned about the bombings taking place on the radio, 'the same as the rest of the world', which he found 'a shock' when realising that was the case while reading the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus. 'Everything is his experience, or my interpretation of his experience,' the Memento director continued. 'Because as I keep reminding everyone, it's not a documentary. It is an interpretation. That's my job.' More Trending Cameron, who has said his film will be 'apolitical', has also revealed he expects Ghosts of Hiroshima to be the lowest-grossing film of his career, given the topic. While that might sound a surprising statement, given his status as king of the Hollywood blockbusters it makes a little more sense. He currently boasts three films in the top five list of highest-grossing movies ever, with Avatar in the top spot on $2.92billion (£2.12bn), its 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way of Life at third and previous long-running number one Titanic at four. 'I'm a shopping writer and Abercrombie's Wimbledon-ready set is my payday pick'
If you're in the mood to treat yourself now that payday has finally arrived, this Wimbledon-ready Abercrombie & Fitch buy is what I'd recommend adding to your basket this month Payday has finally arrived after what seems like an eternity, and if you're anything like me, you've mentally spent half your wage already. However, this year I'm committed to shopping more mindfully and avoiding the over-purchase of items I'll only wear or use once. So, I'm restricting myself to just one treat (perhaps two) per month. Part of my role involves browsing through new-in sections, so I have a good idea of what's available this month. One co-ord, in particular, caught my eye for June's payday treat. And it's come just in time for the start of Wimbledon. The matching set in question is Abercrombie's strawberry print waistcoat and skort. Skorts are often very relaxed and informal looking, however, thanks to the shorts on this mini being hidden, the skirt looks far more refined and polished than others on the market. On top of this, the waistcoat features a tie detail at the back so you can cinch it in as much or little as you like, and help create a figure-flattering silhouette. My favourite part, however, is the adordable micro strawberry print that fits perfectly into the 'strawberries and cream' theme around Wimbledon. And don't worry, if the print isn't really your style, you can also shop the set in an on-trend black and white polka dot print or plain white linen. Happy payday shopping!
