Competitive golf built on scorecards and birdies is fun, but fans go even more wild when all their favorite athletes swap their regular arsenal with golf clubs.
That spirit was front and center at the American Century Championship, where retired NHL star Joe Pavelski pulled off a bold win on Sunday.
It was not an easy job. The 41-year-old outpaced golf lover Stephen Curry, John Smoltz, and Taylor Twellman, piling up 73 points in total, including 29 on Sunday alone.
His showdown included five birdies and a roaring eagle on the 18th hole.

Meanwhile, baseball Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz put up a strong fight with 28 points on Sunday. He finished second with 64 total points.
Jake Owen followed in third with 62, and Taylor Twellman landed fourth at 61.
Steph Curry, who won the event in 2023, was in contention until a costly double bogey on the final hole dropped him to fifth with 58 points.
"It feels so good to finally get one," Pavelski said, holding the trophy. "Selfishly, I get to play a bunch of golf. It's a very competitive group out here and just an awesome setting."

The win came on his 41st birthday weekend, which also marked his 17th wedding anniversary, a double celebration for the former San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars forward.
The 4-time NHL All-Star additionally took home a $150,000 paycheck from the tournament's $750,000 purse.
He becomes the third NHL player to win the event, joining Dan Quinn and Mario Lemieux.
"I got the text last night from Quinny, little pep talk. Pretty awesome to go get one for the hockey guys," Pavelski said. "We're a tight-knit group. I know they were cheering for me. It's special to get it done."
The fans were out in full force, many waving Sharks and Stars jerseys, and Pavelski noticed.
"It doesn't go unnoticed when I hear you guys shouting, cheering from behind the rope," he said. "The hockey side is special, and the connections I had with the fans in San Jose and Dallas mean the world to me."

VICIS, Schutt Helmets Top Updated Virginia Tech Football Safety Ratings

PLAINVIEW, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This week, the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab recalibrated its helmet testing protocols to better reflect how well helmets manage impacts tied to concussion risk, and both VICIS and Schutt helmets continue to meet and exceed these more rigorous safety standards while other popular models drop in rating. "We are proud that VICIS and Schutt helmets continue to set the gold standard as we protect the future of the game." - Jeremy Erspamer, CEO of Certor Sports, parent company of Schutt and VICIS. Share This shift aims to ensure that 5-star ratings reflect only the most advanced protection available. As a result, the number of youth football helmets earning a 5-star rating decreased by more than 75%, with only six helmets earning a top rating. The VICIS ZERO2 Youth helmet now remains among one of only two 5-star-rated youth helmets readily available for purchase. 'These updated ratings are monumental for football safety at every level,' said Jeremy Erspamer, CEO of Certor Sports, parent company of Schutt and VICIS. 'They re-establish what it means to be a top-performing helmet and provide a clearer roadmap for parents and coaches to choose the best protection for their athletes. We are proud that VICIS and Schutt helmets continue to set the gold standard as we protect the future of the game.' Virginia Tech's STAR (Summation of Tests for the Assessment of Risk) system evaluates helmets based on how well they reduce head acceleration in sports-specific impact scenarios tied to concussion risk. With stricter thresholds, only helmets with exceptional performance now earn the highest 5-star designation. Virginia Tech Helmet Lab only recommends players wear helmets that receive a 5-star or 4-star rating. In the Youth Football Helmet category, the VICIS ZERO2 Youth earned a 5-star rating, placing it in the top tier for impact protection. Multiple Schutt helmets received a 4-star rating, reaffirming the brand's reputation among parents, coaches, and programs seeking elite-level head protection. In the Varsity Football Helmet category, only 11 varsity helmets received 5 stars, including four from Certor Sports, the most of any other brand. The VICIS ZERO2 and VICIS ZERO2 TRENCH remain standout performers, both earning a 5-star rating under the tightened benchmarks. The Schutt F7 2.0 was recognized for its superior impact severity reduction, also receiving a 5-star rating. 'These new ratings should be a wake-up call with Virginia Tech no longer recommending some of the most commonly used helmets in youth and varsity football,' Erspamer said. 'Just because a helmet is widely used doesn't mean it's the safest. This should be a moment of reckoning for the entire football ecosystem, from manufacturers to coaches and parents. We owe it to young athletes to go beyond familiarity and focus on verified protection.' Certor Sports' continued innovation and leadership in protective design ensures that its helmets consistently rank among the safest in the game, an achievement made more meaningful by the raised bar. NHL schedule release: What to watch for next season, from Matthew Schaefer to more Alex Ovechkin

The NHL released its 2025-26 schedule on Wednesday, 1,312 games set to be played from Oct. 7-April 16 before the chase for the Stanley Cup. Soon, there will be 1,344, with each of the league's 32 teams playing 84 games starting in 2026-27. But until that happens, here's a look at some of the best hockey has to offer next season: Schaefer's debut? No. 1 draft pick Matthew Schaefer is no sure bet to make the New York Islanders out of training camp. If he does, Schaefer would be in line to make his NHL debut on Oct. 9 in Pittsburgh against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. Crosby, 38, is entering his 21st season. Schaefer turns 18 just a little over a month before opening night. Schaefer would be the second top pick in three years to start his pro career against Crosby on the road. Chicago's Connor Bedard also did so in 2023 on the way to winning the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Full slates The back-to-back defending champion Florida Panthers are set to raise their second consecutive Stanley Cup banner as part of an opening night tripleheader on Oct. 7, and it will not take long for fans to see way more games on the same day. There are 16, with every team in action, for the first time this season on Saturday, Oct. 11. That happens again on Tuesday, Oct. 28 with game times staggered from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. EDT. Each of the three final Saturdays of the season features 15 games. Special events The Penguins and Nashville Predators face off in a pair of games in Stockholm on Nov. 14 and 16. The New York Rangers visit the Boston Bruins in the 'Thanksgiving Showdown' on Black Friday, Nov. 28. The first Winter Classic in Florida takes place Jan. 2 when the Panthers host the Rangers at the Miami Marlins' ballpark with a retractable roof. A surefire open-air game across the Sunshine State comes roughly a month later when the Tampa Bay Lightning play Boston in the Stadium Series at the home of the NFL's Buccaneers. The Islanders' UBS Arena is expected to hold a pre-Olympic sendoff event when the season pauses Feb. 6 for players to participate in the Milan Games. The event is in lieu of All-Star festivities, which are being rethought for future years after the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament in February. Milestones in reach Alex Ovechkin is three goals away from 900 after breaking Wayne Gretzky's NHL career record in April. Whatever number Ovechkin finishes at — he turns 40 in September and this is the final year of his contract with the Washington Capitals — will become the new 894 that seemed unapproachable until the successful 'GR8 Chase.' Ovechkin has not closed the door on playing beyond his 21st season, but if this is it, game 81 is against Crosby in Washington. The finale is at Columbus against the Blue Jackets, against whom Ovechkin debuted in 2005. Crosby is 13 points away from becoming the ninth player in league history with 1,700. Ovechkin would be the 10th if he records 77. Three-time MVP Connor McDavid, coming off another Edmonton loss in the final to Florida, is far and away the leading scorer since entering the league in 2015. He's 18 points away from 1,100, while longtime Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl needs 53 to get to 1,000.

NFL insider pumps up Patriots and WR Terry McLaurin trade talk

NFL insider Albert Breer doesn't expect the Washington Commanders to botch their pending contract extension with All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin. However, if the situation remains unresolved and McLaurin is available, Breer believes the New England Patriots would be "very interested" in pursuing him. McLaurin is currently in the final year of his contract in Washington, and he has voiced his frustrations over the failing contract negotiations publicly. He has 77-plus receptions for over 1,000 yards in the last five straight seasons with the Commanders. Last year, he proved to be quarterback Jayden Daniels' top receiving target with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. "This is a guy who has been a team captain for a long time, exemplary character, all of that, so my anticipation is that the Commanders are going to take a swing at getting something done with him over the course of the next week just because it makes too much sense for both sides," Breer said on Arbella Early Edition. "I think the Patriots would be very interested in this. "Now, there's a price point for all of it, and what would that mean? Obviously, he's not going to come here with an unresolved contract situation, so you better be talking about a draft pick, plus a contract. He's a little older than people realize because he was a five-year college guy. He's over 30 now. Certainly, as far as what they're looking for, from a person, from a player—helping Drake Maye—this guy checks every box." McLaurin is exactly the kind of veteran playmaker the Patriots were initially looking for in free agency before signing four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. There is still some uncertainty about what they'll get out of Diggs, who is still recovering from the torn ACL injury he suffered last season. Diggs is one of the hardest-working players in the league, and he looks well ahead of schedule in his recovery. With that said, it would be a huge bonus for the team to add McLaurin, an elite player coming off a highly productive season with a young quarterback. A duo of Diggs and McLaurin would be a dramatic facelift for a Patriots offense that has ranked among the worst for the last three seasons. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
