
Bedford Media Announces Michael Quinn as Global Image Director of i-D
The company said he'll 'lead all image and visual aspects across print and digital, which also includes commissioning and talent negotiations; working closely with i-D global editor-in-chief and chief brand officer Thom Bettridge to continue to define i-D across all touch points, including its emerging commercial channels'.
Hailing from Liverpool, Quinn began his career in New York as an agent representing creative talents 'where he played an integral role in launching the Paris-based creative agency ArtList'.
He moved into media 10 years ago and has held positions at Interview Magazine, Document Journal, Essence & Sundial Media Group, SSENSE, and Highsnobiety. He's not new to i-D having worked with the new team recently as image consultant for i-D 374 'The Unknown Issue'. His first full-time edition in his new post will be the i-D 375 issue launching in September.

Merry Hill mall enjoys record-breaking first-half footfall
It's been a good year so far for Merry Hill so far and helping the West Midlands mall maintain its position 'as one of the UK's top 10 super-regional destinations', is record footfall, reporting a 5.6% year-on-year increase for the first half of 2025. The momentum continued in June as the centre also experienced a 3.7% uplift compared to the same month last year, as it continued a 12-month rolling increase of 3.3%. 'This growth across the destination significantly outperforms the super regional benchmark', which up until the end of May was tracking at +2.6%, as measured by Savills, operator Sovereign Centros from CBRE said. What's more, the centre 'is now on track to exceed 15.5 million visitors in 2025, following a year of major investment and proactive asset management', it added. The centre, which features more than 175 brands, has also benefitted from further investment from anchor tenants including H&M, and M&S for its newest store concept, alongside the England debut of Australia-based international retailer Harvey Norman. The operator noted the positive trajectory was also boosted by several high-profile leisure attractions, including Hollywood Bowl and XF Gym. Alistair Winning, asset manager at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, added: "From a leasing and asset management perspective, the first half of this year has been a reflection of the transformation Merry Hill has undergone over the last few years. We're seeing tremendous confidence from both new and existing tenants. This wave of investment, driven by our proactive asset management strategy, is creating a truly compelling destination that keeps visitors coming back time and time again, solidifying our position as one of the UK's top super regional destinations.'

France hands Shein €40 million fine for deceptive commercial practices
France handed fast-fashion giant Shein a €40 million fine on Thursday, following a year-long investigation that found the online retailer guilty of "deceptive commercial practices". France's Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) — the regulator in charge of French consumer law — revealed that Shein had misled its customers on price reductions, as well as on the scope of its "commitments concerning environmental claims". In its statement, the DGCCRF confirmed that Shein — a China-based company owned by Infinite Styles Ecommerce Limited (IELS) — had accepted the fine. The blow comes two months after the European Commission found Shein guilty of engaging in illegal commercial practices under EU law in May, following a coordinated investigation with national consumer protection authorities. Through analysing products listed as on sale on Shein's French website from October 2022 to August 2023, investigators found that 57% of products had no price reduction, 19% had a slight discount, while 11% of products actually had a price increase. "These practices, with their profusion of crossed-out prices and permanent promotions, give consumers the impression that they are getting a very good deal", stated the Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention. Under French regulation, the reference price for discounted goods is a product's lowest price during the 30 days which precede the start of a sale. On top of misleading customers, the French anti-fraud and competition agency found that Shein was "unable to justify the environmental claims made on its website", describing itself as a "responsible company" which limits its environmental impact by "reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25%." French authorities determined that these statements contradict the firm's business model, which is "based on an abundant supply of textiles at low prices." In 2020, fast fashion was estimated to account for 8-10% of global CO2 emissions. Although Shein may have been hit with a heavy fine, in recent years the company has become somewhat accustomed to public scrutiny. In January, British politicians were outraged when the online retailer refused to provide assurances that its products did not include cotton produced in the Xinjiang region of China, which has been linked to forced Uyghur labour. Meanwhile, an investigation published in 2024 by Swiss advocacy group Public Eye found that some workers at Shein factories were still working 75-hour weeks, despite the company's promises to improve conditions for employees.

China hits Europe's brandy exports with duties but adds exemptions
French drink manufacturers are bracing for losses as China said it would place a heavy trade duty on brandy exports from the European Union, potentially taking a gulp out of their sales in the coming years. A tariff rate on EU brandy could go up to 34.9% for five years from 5 July. The duty was announced after China's Ministry of Commerce concluded an investigation into European brandy imports, determining that the products threatened its national brandy industry. Cognac, which is heavily exported from France, was a product of concern, although major cognac makers like Pernod Ricard and Remy Cointreau will now be exempted. China's investigation ruled that the EU had engaged in spirit 'dumping', a practice where foreign goods are sold significantly below their normal price. The corrective tariff will be charged in addition to a normal customs duty. Belgium-based trade group spiritsEUROPE, representing EU producers of spirit drinks, said in a statement that it 'regrets today's decision by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce to impose final anti-dumping duties averaging 32.2% on EU wine-based spirits, marc-based spirits, and brandies as of 5 July,' adding that 'the measures will still pose a significant barrier to legitimate trade'. The trade group also said that the EU spirits sector provided 'substantial evidence over the last 18 months, clearly demonstrating the absence of any dumping practices on the Chinese market'. 'The decision originates from a spat around unfair competition and protectionism and it is bad news for European drinks companies who enjoy big sales to Asia,' said Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell. 'That explains why shares in Rémy Cointreau and Pernod Ricard were weak on the news as drinkers in China might think twice about buying their products if the price is now much higher.' The news pulled down French spirits makers' share prices, with Pernod Ricard slumping 1%, Remy Cointreau down 1.75%, and luxury giant LVMH, the parent company of Hennessy and Rémy Martin, losing 2.1% around 11 CEST in Europe. Closer to midday, share price losses moderated after news broke that China spared major cognac producers from the new duties, provided they sell at a minimum price. Trade group spiritsEUROPE welcomed the partial relief, saying that 'to safeguard their operations and maintain a stable presence in the Chinese market, several affected companies have entered into price undertakings (raising export prices) with MOFCOM (China's Ministry of Commerce)', adding that these will replace anti-dumping duties for these companies. The group urged Beijing to expand this option to all European companies affected. SpiritsEUROPE Director General Hervé Dumesny said 'Beyond its direct impact on our sector, this decision risks fuelling trade tensions at a time when mutual cooperation is more important than ever.' The decision on brandy comes after the EU decided to impose tariffs as high as 45% on Chinese-made electric vehicles last year.
