and in my experience, people are right.
But the other day, a colleague showed me a post on the site from a man named Chris who said he had started joining online meetings 30 seconds early, all the better to be discreetly recorded by the AI note-taking assistants now used to transcribe virtual meetings.
He then starts screaming that he is on the Titanic, which has just hit an iceberg, and needs help pronto, before carrying on normally for the rest of the meeting.
'When the meeting ends,' he wrote, 'everyone gets an emailed transcript where the AI summary is: 'Chris hit an iceberg, is trapped on a sinking ship, and general Q2 pricing updates.''

I enjoyed this story and hope it travels far because finally, someone may have found a good use for AI in the office.
Obviously I hear constantly about the latest 'use case' in the 'AI space' that is going to make working life more productive, efficient and streamlined.
I also realise that scientists at Google DeepMind were joint winners of last year's Nobel chemistry prize for an AI model that is already helping to speed up work on intractable problems such as antibiotic resistance and plastic pollution.
In the right hands, artificial intelligence can be a force for great good. It's just that I keep coming across people like Sarah Harrop, who know how dire it can be in the wrong hands.
Harrop is an employment partner at the Addleshaw Goddard law firm in London, which means she deals with claims of unfair dismissal, discrimination and other forms of mistreatment.

, she says there has been a distinct rise in the number of vastly more detailed, lengthy and outwardly credible correspondence to HR departments and employment tribunals.
The documents often contain references to legal precedents and other references to the law that don't always turn out to be accurate, but take hours to sort through.
'We have seen examples where there are dozens and dozens of pieces of correspondence sent to the employment tribunal,' she told me. The length of the documents and the speed at which they are generated suggests they are almost certainly produced by robots rather than humans, she said, adding this causes 'significant pressure' for employers and tribunals.
I can well imagine what a tedious and costly burden this can be for employers, and I am sure they are not alone.
I mentioned Harrop's observations to a few people last week and quickly learnt that employees are by no means the only ones using AI to turbocharge complaints.
A man who has been a school governor for many years said the volume and intensity of what were almost certainly AI-assisted complaints from parents had skyrocketed in the past 18 months.
The complaints were often well crafted and included convincing references to legal precedents that made them hard to ignore, he said, even though the longest ones invariably turned out to be specious.
I do not see this situation easing any time soon. The internet is now awash with sites offering to harness the power of AI to generate powerful, well-written complaints.
I tested one designed for employees by telling it I wanted a letter about the extent to which male lavatories outnumbered female ones in a large office I recently visited.
Within seconds, it spat back a brisk, grammatically correct and unnervingly persuasive indictment of what it called an unfair and discriminatory arrangement that 'presents a negative and potentially unprofessional impression' to female guests.
I'm not going to deny that this induced a surge of gratitude, and the realisation that there must be many times when an AI-aided complaint is fully justified. Shoddy products, unfair parking tickets and malevolent employers are doubtless all grounds for a souped-up grievance letter.
But a world in which those charged with handling complaints are buried beneath an avalanche of AI-generated verbiage of questionable legitimacy is not a good one.
How tempting it must feel to stop diligently wading through the crud and go over to the dark side by simply using AI to respond.
I don't suppose we will ever reach the point where we leave it to the bots to fight it out and get back to us once they are done. But then again, can we say for sure that we won't? – Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2025

Divisions emerge between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil over college fees
Sharp divisions have emerged between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael over the future of third-level fees, after recent suggestions from the Minister for Higher Education James Lawless that the end of cost-of-living packages would mean that the fees payable by students would increase. Last night Tánaiste and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris sent a voice note to his party's TDs reassuring them that, contrary to the suggestions of the Fianna Fáil Minister, the budget would seek to reduce the costs of going to college. 'The budget will be agreed by Government with key input from the party leaders. But it does need to help families with the cost of putting a young person through college,' said Mr Harris. 'That's the programme for government that I've signed up for, it's the programme for government that Fine Gael has signed up for – one that commits to reducing fees.' The annual student contribution of €3,000 has been reduced by a €1,000 grant from the Government as part of its cost-of-living measures in recent budgets. Mr Lawless said at the weekend that with no cost-of-living package due for this year, he will not have the funding to reduce the fees again, meaning that students could face a €1,000 increase next year. On Monday a spokesman for the Minister said that he intended to reduce the cost of going to college as committed to in the programme for government. 'It is important to move on from temporary measures and into a more sustainable permanent system, but this may take a few budgets,' he said. Sources said Mr Lawless intends to maximise assistance to those in need at the expense of universal benefits that all college students, including those from a wealthy background, receive. But senior Fine Gael sources scoffed at the idea that Mr Lawless would reduce the cost of college by effectively increasing fees and warned that the party would insist that programme for government commitments were kept. Fine Gael TD Maeve O'Connell said: 'Reducing the cost of education and helping hard-pressed families is important to Fine Gael and our party. 'Now is not the time to row back on commitments made by the party during the last election and by this Government,' she said, in an unusual criticism of a Minister by a Coalition TD. Ms O'Connell contrasted the cost of cutting the college fees with the cost of social welfare increases. 'To put this in context, for every €1 increase in social welfare rates, the cost is approximately €75 to €80 million. A €1,000 reduction in the student contribution fee costs €99 million. These are the choices that the Government will need to make as part of the Budget,' she said. Opposition TDs were quick to leap on the issue. 'It is incredibly unfair to leave students in limbo,' said Labour Senator Laura Harmon. 'College should not be a luxury. We need long-term thinking when it comes to education, not short-term accounting. This type of chaotic policymaking only adds to the stress already facing young people.' Sinn Féin's Donna McGettigan said the 'Government's decision to hike up student fees by €1,000 is absolutely outrageous'. Social Democrats spokeswoman Jen Cummins said: 'Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael need to get their act together and keep their commitments to students and families to reduce third-level fees'. Six ministerial advisers sought shorter cooling-off periods for private-sector jobs after political roles
Six former special advisers to government ministers sought exemptions last year from the 'cooling-off' period during which they cannot lobby, the Register of Lobbying annual report for 2024 has disclosed. It is the highest number of waivers sought since 2020, when eight applications were received to waive the prohibition on lobbying after stepping down from employment with government. The identities of the six special advisers were not disclosed by the Standards in Public Office Commission (Sipo), the public ethics watchdog, in the report. Special advisers to ministers are restricted from engaging in lobbying in certain circumstances for a year after they leave office. READ MORE A large number of special advisers left their roles in 2020 after that year's general election and at the end of last January following the 2024 general election. It is expected a significant number of waivers will be sought this year. Advisers, ministers, and senior public officials who leave employment to take up roles in the private or non-government sectors are subject to a cooling-off period. During that time they cannot engage in lobbying activities connected to their former employment or roles in the public service. [ Former taoisigh among steady stream of politicians turning to lucrative career in PR-lobbying firms ] The watchdog's report refers to a case study involving an unnamed special adviser who took up a position with a charity and applied to waive the final four months of the cooling-off period. The applicant confirmed they would not be involved in any lobbying activity for the last four months of the period, so a waiver was granted. There were three applications for waivers in 2023, none in 2022, five in 2021 and eight in 2020. No minister has sought to have the cooling-off period waived since 2016. Three former public servants were granted exemptions from the cooling-off period, all in 2016 and 2017. The annual report also reveals the total number of people registered as lobbyists increased to 2,710 last year, an increase of 172 on 2023. More than 12,300 returns of lobbying activities had been submitted in respect of the three reporting periods in 2024. The top policy matter subject to lobbying in 2024 was health, followed by economic development and industry, agriculture, justice and equality, and housing. Three investigations into possible unreported lobbying were carried over from 2023 to 2024, and one further investigation was launched during the year. The complaints and investigations unit closed one of these cases, leaving three ongoing at the end of 2024. A total of 414 fixed-payment notices for late returns were issued in 2024. Of these, 169 were for late returns in periods before 2024. A total of 27 notices of potential prosecution were issued in 2024 for non-payment of fixed payment notices.

European stocks retreat as markets await tariff deadline
European stocks ended lower in broad-based declines on Monday, closing out June with monthly losses as investors monitored for signs of any progress on US trade talks as the July US tariff deadline looms large. Dublin The Irish index of shares ended the day slightly higher, gaining 0.2 per cent by the close of the session. The gains were led by banking shares, with AIB up 1.2 per cent to €6.98, while Bank of Ireland was 0.46 per cent higher, and Permanent TSB added 2.26 per cent. Insurer FBD was also up on the session, gaining 0.72 per cent. Travel and leisure stocks also got a bump, with Ryanair shares advancing to €24.02, a rise of 1.26 per cent. Dalata Hotel Group, meanwhile, gained 1.4 per cent to close the day at €6.45.
