Current and former Lions on the CFL negotiation list include two former Detroit draftees
CFL clubs are permitted to acquire the exclusive Canadian rights to active NFL players. The negotiation list only comes into effect if the player decides to pursue the CFL instead of the NFL. Oftentimes, being listed on the CFL negotiating list means absolutely nothing other than a secondary option for an NFL player, but it can produce some interesting choices for players who are on the fringes of NFL rosters like Detroit's. The nine CFL franchises can place up to 45 players each on their negotiation list.
The only current Lions player whose CFL rights are claimed (as of July 5th) is running back Anthony Tyus. The undrafted rookie from Ohio University is likely poised to battle for a practice squad spot in Detroit behind the foursome of RBs that return from a year ago (Gibbs, Montgomery, Reynolds, Vaki). Tyus is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers claimed Tyus's CFL rights.
Wideout Antoine Green is the most notable other name. Green was a seventh-round pick by the Lions in 2023 and had a good chance to carve out a bigger role for himself in 2024 before suffering a serious brain injury in a preseason game last summer. The Lions waived Green with a "failed physical" designation after the 2025 NFL Draft, following a year where the big receiver from North Carolina was on the Lions' injured reserve.
Green is one of two former Lions whose CFL rights are claimed by the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. The other is a blast from the past: Defensive end Austin Bryant. A fourth-round pick by the Lions in 2019, Bryant played 33 games in four seasons with Detroit, bagging 4.5 sacks--all in 2021. He was last with the 49ers in 2023.
Linebacker Abraham Beauplan, who played 45 snaps on Detroit's special teams in 2024, and safety Brady Breeze are former Lions whose rights are claimed by the Calgary Stampeders. Quarterback Adrian Martinez, a training camp aspirant in 2023 who is currently on the New York Jets' 90-man roster, is claimed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Martinez won the 2024 UFL Most Valuable Player award as a member of the Birmingham Stallions.
The CFL list is a fluid one, so changes could come frequently between now and NFL roster cutdowns in late August.

The Most Important Packers: No. 17 — Devonte Wyatt
Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt is hoping for a big season. The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 last season, sweeping the NFC West and the AFC South along the way. Overall, though, no one in the building was happy. The Packers failed to build on their terrific finish to the 2023 campaign, settled for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, and lost a Wild Card game to eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia. Afterwards, general manager Brian Gutekunst turned up the heat on everybody in the building. 'We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,' Gutekunst said. 'I think it's time we started competing for championships.' Those are fair expectations. The Packers return 20 of 22 starters, and appear to have upgraded the roster via free agency and the draft. With several third and fourth year players trending upward, Green Bay should be poised to make a move. 'I think they're ready,' Gutekunst said. Now, it's time for the Packers to prove their G.M. right. Green Bay's first training camp practice is July 23. Between now and then I will count down the '30 Most Important Packers' heading into the 2025 campaign. At No. 17 is defensive tackle Devonte 17 Devonte Wyatt, DT Last season Wyatt was second on the team in sacks (5.0), quarterback hits (9.0) and tackles for loss (9.0) last season, despite missing three games with an ankle injury. He also had two fumble recoveries. Wyatt had three sacks, five quarterback hits and a fumble recovery in the first four games. Then he missed Weeks 5-7 and never had the same impact after returning on Oct. to date Wyatt was a first round draft pick in 2022 who spent the first three months of his rookie season primarily watching. In fact, after 13 games in 2022, Wyatt had just three pressures, no sacks and no quarterback hits. Wyatt's final four games — in which he had five pressures, 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hits — gave the Packers hope that his potential could eventually lead to production. So Green Bay let starters Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed walk in free agency and increased Wyatt's role. In 2023, Wyatt began proving why he was a first round draft pick, posting 36 tackles (18 solo), 5.5 sacks, six tackles for a loss, 11 quarterback hits and a fumble recovery. Wyatt played 49.7% of the defensive snaps that season, tied for fourth on the team in tackles for loss and ranked fourth on the team in sacks and quarterback hits. The 6-foot-3, 304-pound Wyatt had just one elite season at Georgia. That came in 2021 when Wyatt had 39 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 14 starts on a Bulldogs team that won the national championship. Wyatt, who began his career at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Georgia, then went to the 2022 NFL Combine and ran the 40-yard dash in a blistering 4.77 seconds — one of the fastest times by a defensive lineman. Physical gifts have never been an issue for Wyatt, though. It's the mental side. He scored an 8 on the 50-question Wonderlic test before the 2022 draft, less than half the NFL average of 19. 'That's a big deal. Don't kid yourself,' one NFL scout told me about low Wonderlic scores. 'Now some guys can overcome those scores. But a lot of times when guys bust, you go back and look and sure enough, that Wonderlic score was low.' Wyatt was also arrested in 2020 for three misdemeanor charges — family violence, criminal trespass, and damage to property. While the charges were later dropped, there were several questions about his character before the draft. 'Obviously he had a couple hiccups there at Georgia,' Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said after drafting Wyatt played 33.24% of the defensive snaps last year due to injury and a log jam up front. With T.J. Slaton's departure in free agency, Wyatt's role should increase dramatically. The Packers picked up Wyatt's fifth-year option in May, and his salary for 2026 will be $12.938 million. Both sides would like to get a long term deal done, though, making this a critical year for Said It … 'He's a quick twitch-up, twitchy defensive lineman and a guy that can really explode off the football. So, that is a benefit of this style of system where you're trying to, we're more of a penetrating front as opposed to like a read-and-react playing technique. Pete Carroll discusses reception from USC fans after first being hired by Trojans
As we all know, Pete Carroll is a USC legend. During his nine seasons as the head coach of the program, the Trojans won two national championships and four Rose Bowls, produced three Heisman Trophy winners, and recorded countless other accomplishments. Few saw that coming when Carroll was first hired, however. At the time, he was seen as a failed NFL coach, and his hiring by the Trojans was met with much skepticism. On Wednesday, The Athletic ran a profile of Carroll and how he continues to thrive despite his age. The story included a quote from Carroll on his reception upon his arrival at USC nearly 25 years ago. "They were yelling at me for coming in there. They didn't want me,' Carroll said. 'I was getting a terrible response, but I took it on as, 'I couldn't care less,' because I knew where we were going and what we wanted to do. And because I figured out how I wanted to do it.' Of course it did not take too long for USC fans to change their tone about Carroll. Less than three years later, the Trojans were national champions. Carroll would go on to lead the program to a historic seven-year run between 2002 and 2008. Every season during that stretch, the Trojans won double-digit games and either played for a national championship or recorded a major bowl victory. While it has now been more than 15 years since he left USC, Carroll will forever hold a special place in program lore.

2025 Jacksonville Jaguars' roster preview: CB Montaric Brown
With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Jacksonville Jaguars' 91-man roster. Going alphabetically, up is cornerback Montaric Brown. While he allowed a completion rate of 70%, Brown did hold opponents to just 11.3 yards per catch, limiting YAC with his steady tackling abilities. He also had one interception and five pass breakups. Looking ahead to the 2025 season Brown is competing with Jarrian Jones and Travis Hunter for the starting outside cornerback role opposite of Tyson Campbell. From the sounds of it, Brown has the early advantage in this battle, with ESPN's Michael DiRocco reporting that he was working with the first team defense throughout OTAs and minicamp. Advertisement In Anthony Campanile's vision-based and zone-heavy defensive scheme, there were a number of practices where we heard about Brown getting his hands on the ball while in coverage. By all accounts, Brown has acclimated himself well so far to this new system. "That's who he's been every day that I've been here," Anthony Campanile said of Brown's ball production. "And I can only go by what I see every day that I'm out here, he competes. He loves to compete. "Same thing like Tyson, whether it's on the line of scrimmage, he's not afraid to challenge people. To challenge people at the top of the route and play with technique, but whatever he's gotta do to strain and make the play, he's been doing that, which is awesome.
