Philip Zinckernagel kick-starts first-half onslaught and Chicago goes on to defeat Charlotte 3-2
CHICAGO (AP) — Philip Zinckernagel scored to open a three-goal surge in the first half and the Chicago Fire held on to defeat Charlotte 3-2 on Saturday night.
Chicago scored three times in an 11-minute span of the first half and took a commanding 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
Zinckernagel opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, followed by Brian Gutiérrez (25th minute) and Hugo Cuypers (33rd minute). Zinckernagel's goal came at the end of a long run in which he outraced the defense then delivered a right-footed shot from the right side of the box to the lower right central zone.
After trailing 3-0 at halftime, Charlotte rallied in the second half.
In the 56th minute, Pep Biel scored with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner.
In the 59th minute, Idan Toklomati scored with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the top left corner. Biel assisted on the play. Charlotte did not play another shot on goal the rest of the match.
Seven yellow cards were shown in the second half. Chicago drew five and Charlotte two.
Charlotte's Kristijan Kahlina had two saves. Charlotte scored on both of their shots on goal against Chicago's Jeffrey Gal.
Charlotte has lost three straight on the road.
Chicago won 4-1 at Charlotte on May 17.

L.A. County firefighters to receive Pat Tillman Award at ESPYs
This year's Pat Tillman Award for Service will be presented to two Los Angeles County firefighters during the ESPY awards. (Mark J. County firefighters David Walters and Erin Regan, former athletes who were among the 7,500 emergency personnel who responded to the January wildfires in Southern California, earned them this year's Pat Tillman Award for Service that will be presented at the ESPY Awards. The award — named after Tillman, the former Arizona Cardinals safety who left the NFL to enlist in the Army following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was killed in action — celebrates those with deep ties to sports who have served others, embodying Tillman's legacy. Saquon Barkley: I "never heard a word" from Commanders, Cowboys
The Giants get plenty of criticism for allowing running back Saquon Barkley to become a free agent in 2024. They weren't alone in their decision not to make him part of the team moving forward. Two of their top rivals never even called Barkley. Advertisement "Never heard a word from the Commanders or Dallas," Barkley told someone who is apparently known as Janky Rondo (lay off me, I'm old) at a recent celebrity softball game. "That's why it's BTA when I see them." The Commanders weren't in position to make a run at an elite running back. The Cowboys were, especially with Tony Pollard leaving in free agency for the Titans. Dallas rightfully was criticized at the time for not showing interest in former Titans running back Derrick Henry, who was interested in playing for the Cowboys. Dallas didn't catch much flak for not pursuing Saquon. There's no guarantee it would have worked nearly as well for Saquon in Dallas as it has in Philadelphia. And he definitely wouldn't have had the kind of individual and team success with the Giants that he had with the Eagles. Advertisement The Eagles were the perfect team to pursue him. They had everything else. His arrival provided a potent layer of icing on an award-winning cake. So he should be glad that it wasn't a difficult decision, with perhaps a lesser team than the Eagles offering him something significantly more financially. He also should be glad that the Giants let him get away, allowing him to "BTA" when playing the other teams in the NFC East. And pretty much everyone else.
