CHICAGO (AP) — Philip Zinckernagel scored to open a three-goal surge in the first half and the Chicago Fire held on to defeat Charlotte 3-2 on Saturday night. Chicago scored three times in an 11-minute span of the first half and took a commanding 3-0 lead into the halftime break. Advertisement Zinckernagel opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, followed by Brian Gutiérrez (25th minute) and Hugo Cuypers (33rd minute). Zinckernagel's goal came at the end of a long run in which he outraced the defense then delivered a right-footed shot from the right side of the box to the lower right central zone. After trailing 3-0 at halftime, Charlotte rallied in the second half. In the 56th minute, Pep Biel scored with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner. In the 59th minute, Idan Toklomati scored with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the top left corner. Biel assisted on the play. Bakrar, Wolf score goals to help NYCFC beat short-handed Fire 3-1
NEW YORK (AP) — Mounsef Bakrar and Hannes Wolf each scored a second-half goal to help New York City FC beat the short-handed Chicago Fire 3-1 on Sunday. After a failed clearance by the Fire, Wolf ran onto a loose ball in the left side of the area, cut back to the middle and bent a shot inside the back post to give NYCFC (7-5-3) a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute. Advertisement New York City has won back-to-back games and is unbeaten in three straight. On the counter-attack, Jonathan Dean dropped a passed backward to Philip Zinckernagel for a first-touch finish from the top of the penalty arc to open the scoring in the 19th minute. Brian Gutiérrez was shown a straight red card (violent conduct) in the 31st minute and the Fire (5-5-4) played a man down until Dje D'Avilla — who replaced the injured Mauricio Pineda in the 41st — was shown his second yellow card in the 84th minute. Bakrar started the second half in place of 18-year-old Jonathan Shore and scored in the 58th minute to make it 1-1. Wolf chipped a pass over a defender to Justin Haak, who played a low cross to Bakrar for a one-touch finish from point-blank range. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Brian Gutiérrez had two goals and an assist, and the Chicago Fire defeated Charlotte 4-1 on Saturday night to run their unbeaten streak to three. Slumping Charlotte has lost five in a row. Jonathan Bamba opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with a right-footed shot from the left half-space outside the box to the lower-left-central zone. Gutiérrez assisted. Gutiérrez and Philip Zinckernagel added back-to-back goals in a four-minute stretch of the second half, giving the Fire (5-4-4, 19 points) a commanding 3-0 lead. In the 60th minute, Gutiérrez scored with a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner. In the 64th, Zinckernagel followed with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the central-bottom zone. Andrew Gutman assisted.
