Thousands of dead tilapia found floating in Melaka River, pollution probe launched
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — More than two tonnes of dead freshwater tilapia have been found floating in the Melaka River near Taman Rumpun Bahagia Bachang since Thursday, according to authorities.
The Melaka Water Regulatory Body (BKSA), in a statement yesterday, said investigations are under way to determine the cause of the mass fish deaths.
The probe includes allegations that the incident may have been triggered by an oil spill or chemical odour, based on complaints received on Thursday night.
'Investigations to trace the source of the pollution are actively being carried out from the Batu Hampar area through nearby industrial zones upstream along the Melaka River.
'Emergency clean-up operations have also been activated, in collaboration with the Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM),' BKSA said.
BKSA said it views the incident seriously and urged the public to report any suspected discharge of pollutants by individuals or companies.
'If we are able to identify those responsible, legal action will be taken under the Melaka State Water Resources Enactment.
'Stern action, including compounds, fines or prosecution, may be taken for offences involving pollution of the state's water sources,' it said.
PPSPM, in a separate statement, said 30 personnel were deployed to the site to remove the fish carcasses.
As of midnight yesterday, about 2,000kg of dead fish had been collected, with clean-up work still ongoing.
'The clean-up is being prioritised as the Melaka River is home to the Melaka River Cruise tourism service,' it added.
Similar incidents have reportedly occurred almost annually, believed to be due to the mixing of saltwater and freshwater near sluice gates, which can lead to fish deaths.

'Another officer riding behind the victim also lost control of his motorcycle and sustained minor injuries. He is receiving outpatient treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital,' Bernama reported him as saying. Zamzuri said the officers were conducting surveillance to prevent illegal street racing activities in Kuala Lumpur. He said Amirul had been serving with the department since completing his training and had been attached to the intelligence/operations division for over a year.

Police to probe scuffle between cop, protester at anti-graft rally

PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a scuffle which broke out between a cop on duty and a protester at an anti-corruption rally attended by about 100 people in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said one of the rally-goers had lit a flare at about 4.30pm, producing thick smoke which could have endangered participants, security personnel on duty and members of the public nearby. Because of this, policemen on duty took preventive action, he said. 'As this preventive action was being taken, a scuffle broke out between the rally-goer and a policeman, leaving the latter with minor injuries. The scuffle was broken up by other policemen. Three reports were later lodged over the incident,' he said in a statement. Sulizmie said the investigation was into the use of criminal force against a public servant, the letting off of fireworks, and insulting behaviour. Around 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm today before moving to Dataran Merdeka through Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They urged Putrajaya to strengthen the legal system and reinforce the independence of anti-corruption institutions.

Federal CID chief to be transferred to border control agency
Shuhaily Zain will be replaced by M Kumar as CID director at Bukit Aman. PETALING JAYA : Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain will be transferred to the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency on July 1. Shuhaily, who was appointed federal CID chief in August 2023, confirmed the transfer with Berita Harian but declined to comment further. He will reportedly take over as the director-general of the border agency until June 30, 2027 and replaces Hazani Ghazali who retired in February. Johor police chief M Kumar will take over from Shuhaily as Bukit Aman CID director. Kumar's replacement has yet to be announced. In August last year, Malaysiakini reported that Shuhaily and deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay would be involved in a major shake-up of Bukit Aman's leadership. The news portal quoted a source as saying Ayob might be transferred to lead either the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency or the border agency, while Shuhaily was speculated to take over as director-general of the national anti-drugs agency. The then IGP Razarudin Husain rejected the report, which led to a police investigation into Malaysiakini over its article, with three of its journalists summoned to give their statements last year.
