EA's next Battlefield game may be in trouble and over budget

EA's next Battlefield game is supposedly arriving sometime in spring 2026, but its development is reportedly fraught with issues, leading some of its developers to worry that certain parts of the game won't be well-received. According to a lengthy Ars Technica piece about the game's development troubles and problems facing AAA titles' development as a whole, EA had lofty goals for the next Battlefield (codenamed Glacier) to the point that team members working on the project think they're near unrealistic. The publisher's executives apparently believed that Glacier could match the popularity of Call of Duty and Fortnite and set a 100 million player target over a certain period of time. An employee told Ars that the franchise has never achieved those numbers before, with Battlefield 2042 getting only up to 22 million players within that same period. The first Battlefield , which was the most successful in the franchise so far, only got to "maybe 30 million plus" within that timeframe. One of the reasons why Fortnite has over 100 million active users is because it's free-to-play. In CoD's case, well, aside from having free-to-play titles, it's also the biggest gaming franchise and has a lengthy history, so it's no surprise that it already has a solid fanbase who would play its latest releases. Players had to pay for previous Battlefield games up front, but executives thought that if EA made Glacier free-to-play like its competitors, it could achieve the same numbers. And that is why the publisher promised a free-to-play Battle Royale mode with a six-hour single player campaign for the upcoming game. Ridgeline, the external studio working on the single player mode, however, shuttered in 2024 after working on the project for two years. The studio reportedly found EA's objectives unachievable, since it was expected to reach milestones in the same rate as more established studios when it didn't have the same resources. Now, three other EA studios (Criterion, DICE and Motive) are working on the single-player mode. But since they had to start from scratch, single player is the only Glacier game mode remaining that has yet to reach alpha status. Due to the wider scope of the next title in the franchise and the issues it has faced, it has become the most expensive Battlefield to date. It had a budget of $400 million back in 2023, but the current projections are now apparently "well north" of that. Whether the next Battlefield launches on time remains to be seen. Ars ' sources said that if it does ship as intended, they expect some features and content to be cut from the final product.

No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Cooper Flagg signs rookie contract with Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have signed No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg to his four-year rookie contract, the team announced Wednesday. The team didn't disclose details in announcing Flagg's deal, but the total value of the contract for the top pick on the 2025-26 rookie wage scale is in the range of $62.7 million, with a first-year salary of about $13.8 million, according to Spotrac. Those numbers can fluctuate slightly. Flagg said during his introductory news conference last week that he intends to play in the Summer League in Las Vegas later this month. The Mavericks' Summer League opener against the Los Angeles Lakers and Bronny James is set to be nationally televised on July 10. "I'm excited to give him the ball against the [Los Angeles] Lakers and see what happens," Mavs head coach Jason Kidd said. The 18-year-old from Duke became the fourth freshman to win The Associated Press national player of the year honors in the 64-year history of the award. Flagg led the Blue Devils to the Final Four in his only season. A new era for the Dallas Mavericks The addition of Flagg should help Mavericks fans turn the page on the Luka Doncic era. Less than five months before the NBA Draft, the Mavericks stunned the basketball world by sending Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a package that included Davis, guard Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick. There was a sense of pessimism around the team, but that all changed on May 12. The Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, despite having just a 1.8% chance, and with it the opportunity to select Flagg.

Horror Icons Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley Team Up for Supernatural Slasher COVET — GeekTyrant

Two of horror's most recognizable faces are finally colliding in a new blood-soaked nightmare. Kane Hodder, the stuntman and actor who famously played Jason Voorhees in four Friday the 13th films, and Bill Moseley, the twisted face of The Devil's Rejects and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 , are joining forces for a new horror-thriller titled Covet . The film comes from writer-director Brian McQuery, whose debut feature Plea starred horror royalty Heather Langenkamp. Covet is described as a supernatural whodunnit with a sinister twist: 'When a sleazy car salesman is framed for the murder of his mistress, he must prove his innocence — only to learn the forces responsible may not be human.' McQuery seems ready to tap deep into genre roots while playing to his stars' strengths. The director said: 'I'm thrilled to work with Kane in a role crafted to take advantage of both his intimidating presence and sense of humor. And I can not wait to see what Bill Moseley will do with his portrayal of Sheriff Troy.' Covet is being produced by Spyder Dobrofsky under his Worlds Apart banner. Dobrofsky has been steadily carving out a space in indie horror, having recently produced The Weeping , featuring Doug Jones and Reggie Lee, and directed Down Below , starring Eric Roberts and Bai Ling. Dobrofsky is clearly banking on horror fan fervor with this cast: 'Icons Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley sharing the screen together, with Brian's wildly original script, is exactly the type of horror we've been looking for at Worlds Apart. 'We couldn't be more excited to bring Brian's vision to life, and give the horror audience the chills, scares, and nostalgia they love so much.' Both Hodder and Moseley come with serious slasher legacy credentials. Beyond his Friday the 13th legacy, Hodder terrified audiences as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet franchise. Moseley, meanwhile, remains a fan-favorite for his absolutely unhinged turns as Chop Top in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Otis Driftwood in Rob Zombie's film universe. They most recently starred together in the horror film Hayride To Hell . Source: Variety
