Tornado warnings issued for parts of south-central Manitoba on Monday night

CBC2 days ago
Some parts of south-central Manitoba are under a tornado warning on Monday night.
The rural municipality of Macdonald, including the communities of Brunkild, Starbuck and La Salle, and the rural municipality of Morris, including Rosenort and Aubigny, are under a tornado warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada shortly before 7 p.m. Monday.
Damaging wings, large hail and intense spots of rainfall are also possible during the storm, the warnings say.
People in those areas are advised to take cover immediately if threatening weather nears. Anyone who observes threatening weather — such as a roaring sound, a funnel cloud, and/or swirling or flying debris — should take shelter as soon as possible.
Once inside, ECCC advises going into a room on the lowest floor that's outside from walls or windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.
The weather agency also says people in the impacted regions should leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing structures, and move to a strong building if possible.
The cities of Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, as well as the Interlake region, are also under a severe thunderstorm watch issued shortly before 7 p.m., according to ECCC.

Montreal weather: Pleasant summer day makes way for another loathsome heat warning

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Thursday into Friday for greater Montreal and the Montérégie and Lanaudière regions. Wednesday's forecast calls for sunny skies, a high of 27 Celsius, a humidex value of 29, a UV index of 9, or very high, and a low of 19. Thursday's forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 33, a humidex of 40, a UV index of 9 and winds out of the southwest at 20 km/h gusting to 40 in the morning. Thursday night will see a low of low 22 and a 70 per cent chance of showers. On Thursday, 'the combination of high temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity levels will give humidex values near 40 during the day,' Environment Canada said. 'The overnight period will be uncomfortable with lows exceeding 20 degrees Celsius.' The federal weather agency recommends checking in on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people multiple times a day. Montrealers should also be on the lookout for early signs of heat exhaustion, including headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, intense fatigue and dark urine. During intense heat, it's recommended to drink water often, close blinds and shades, turn on air conditioning or use a fan, and move to the coolest space in your home.

Only 3 wildfires now burning across N.L., as rain helps quell blazes

New Wes Morgan says rainfall is helping fight against Chance Harbour, Musgrave Harbour fires Rainfall continues to help crews fighting fires in Newfoundland and Labrador as the number of active wildfires drops from five to three, says the provincial fire duty officer. The active wildfires are the Winokapu fire in Labrador and the Chance Harbour fire in Newfoundland. The Ragged Harbour fire, which forced nearby Musgrave Harbour residents to evacuate over the weekend, also continues to burn. Wes Morgan said Wednesday morning that firefighters hit the ground on Tuesday to fight the Chance Harbour fire, located on the Bonavista Peninsula. "The precipitation that was forecasted did come true and we did see significant amounts of rain — that was a real advantage to us," he told CBC. Morgan said they haven't seen any additional fire growth, but it remains steady at 1,820 hectares. "Overall, it was a really great day and spirits are good and crews were back out in that way again this morning," he said. "What we're seeing now on the ground is a slow-moving ground fire, not a fast-moving fire." It is still considered to be burning out of control and Morgan said crews are working daily to suppress it but he couldn't give a timeline for when it could be under control. Morgan also couldn't give an update on any property damage. In central Newfoundland, the Musgrave Harbour fire has also stagnated and remains 1,660 hectares in size. "The focus of [fighting] that fire will be on the northern and eastern edge, which is the closest portion of that fire to the community," Morgan said, adding crews will get aerial support "as needed." There is currently a province-wide fire ban in effect, but Morgan couldn't say when it could be lifted. "The fire ban is based on multiple factors, including fire activity in the province," he said.
