Maha price hike: Liquor smuggling from MP on a high

Time of India2 days ago
Nagpur: The recent hike in liquor prices in Maharashtra has triggered a considerable rise in liquor smuggling from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, where alcohol is significantly cheaper.
Sources said Maharashtra-based smugglers have become active in the backdrop of the price hike.
The Nagpur crime branch has intensified its crackdown on interstate liquor smuggling, intercepting a consignment smuggled in from other states. In a significant operation on June 28, the crime branch's Unit No. 2, under senior inspector Mahesh Sagade, Assistant PI Gajanan Chambhare, Mahendra Sadmake, and others under DCP Crime Rahul Maknikar, intercepted branded liquor based on a tip-off about a smuggling operation.
The consignment was supposed to be delivered at Jaripatka and some locations in north Nagpur.
The action took place near LIC Chowk, under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station. At approximately 9.30pm, the crime branch apprehended Sahil Turkar after his car was intercepted. Another suspect, identified only as Pandit from Gopalganj, Shivni, Madhya Pradesh, remains at large. Sources said Pandit supplied the liquor to Turkar for taking it to Jaripatka.

During the raid, the police seized a substantial haul of illicit liquor, including eight 750ml bottles of Black Dog, ten 750ml bottles of Signature, and twenty-two 750ml bottles of Blender's Pride. Additionally, a silver Skoda four-wheeler, a black Redmi mobile phone, a blue Tecno Spark mobile phone, and a black Nokia keypad phone were confiscated. The total value of the seized items is estimated at Rs6,91,694.
Turkar failed to produce any valid permit for the liquor, leading to his arrest and the seizure of the contraband, vehicle, and phones in the presence of witnesses. The seized items and the accused were handed over to Sadar police station for further investigation under sections 65(a), 65(e), and 83 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. The police are now pursuing the absconding suspect, Pandit, and intensifying efforts to dismantle the smuggling network.
According to police sources, the high demand for affordable liquor in Nagpur has emboldened notorious smugglers like Chelani and others, who are actively exploiting the price disparity to fuel the illegal trade.

Fraudsters pose as Mumbai Police officers, dupe 57-year-old man of 14 lakh; two held

New Delhi: A 57-year-old retired telecom employee from Kishan Ganj, north Delhi, lost Rs 14 lakh in a "digital arrest" scam after cyber fraudsters, posing as Mumbai Police, threatened him with arrest over alleged bank fraud. Two suspects, Banshi Lal and Prem Kumar, both 20-year-old graduates from Barmer, Rajasthan, have been arrested. According to police, the case came to light when the victim filed a complaint via the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), stating he received a video call from scammers who claimed his bank account was linked to illegal activities and that Mumbai Police were on their way to arrest him. 'Not because I have broken any law': Zohran Mamdani reacts to Trump's 'arrest threat', says voters will reply

Mamdani issued a statement after Trump threatened to arrest him. NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani issued a statement Tuesday after President Donald Trump said his administration would have to arrest Mamdani if he stops ICE from doing its work as NYC mayor. Mamdani has won the democratic primary and will face the general election in November. Trump who denounced Mamdani profusely and called him a lunatic and a communist was responding to a question on Mamdani's election promise that he would not allow ICE to arrest and deport New Yorkers. "Well then we'll have just to arrest him. Look, we don't need a communist in this country but if we have one, I'm going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation. We send him money, we send him all the things that he needs to run a government and by the way, they get already about three times what you get. If you look at per capita, Florida gets one-third of what New York gets," Trump said as he hosted an immigration roundtable at New Florida Detention Facility. "A lot of people are saying he (Mamdani) is here illegally. You know we are going to look over everything. And ideally, he's going to turn out to be much less than a communist but right now he's a communist. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo That's not a socialist," Trump said. 'We will not accept this intimidation' "The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported. Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city," Mamdani said in his statement. "His statements don't just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadow: if you speak up, they will come for you." Row over Mamdani's citizenship Several Republicans pushed for cancelling Mamdani's citizenship as he became a US citizen only in 2018. But Mamdani is a legal citizen who came to the US in 1998 when he was seven years old. Earlier, Trump threatened that he would cut federal funds to New York if Mamdani becomes the mayor and does not cooperate with his administration.
