The Mikado - In Concert: celebrating 140 years of Gilbert and Sullivan
Cape Town G&S, in collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, is set to light up the Artscape Opera House with a jubilant concert staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's most iconic comic opera, The Mikado. This limited run, part of a special anniversary celebration, will take place from 25 to 27 July 2025, culminating in a matinee performance on Sunday, 27 July. As the opera marks its 140th anniversary, audiences can expect a fresh and exhilarating rendition of this timeless classic.
Premiering at London's Savoy Theatre in March 1885, The Mikado quickly became a cultural phenomenon, its clever satire of bureaucracy and British institutions cleverly cloaked in a fictional Japanese setting. The production enjoyed an unprecedented run of 672 performances, establishing itself as the most performed and beloved of all Gilbert and Sullivan's works. The upcoming concert staging aims to honour this legacy with a bold, musically immersive presentation reminiscent of the grandeur of the BBC Proms.
In a unique approach to the opera, the performance will feature the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra playing live on stage, alongside the cast and chorus, providing an all-encompassing, symphonic concert experience for the audience. Remarkably, the opera's spoken dialogue will not be included; instead, a trio of charismatic hosts will guide viewers through the narrative with witty commentary, engaging historical insights, and fascinating trivia about Gilbert and Sullivan.
Fashion will also play a significant role in this celebratory event. The six leading ladies will adorn the Artscape stage in exquisite original designs by acclaimed South African fashion designer Stephen Van Eeden. Known for his stunning red-carpet gowns and bridal couture, Van Eeden's creations have graced numerous public figures, adding an extra layer of glamour to this illustrious production.
The talented ensemble cast will bring to life memorable characters, including Henco Hunter as the authoritative Mikado, Wilhelm Lichtenberg as the lovesick Nanki-Poo, and Barend van der Westhuizen as the comically distressed Ko-Ko. They will be joined by Stephan le Roux as Pooh-Bah, Daniel von Hoesslin as Pish-Tush, and Regina Malan as the formidable Katisha. The roles of the trio of schoolgirls enhance the show's charm, performed by Sian Atterbury (Yum-Yum), Kerryn Warren (Pitti-Sing), and TeNeale Maeker (Peep-Bo), whose vocal grace will undoubtedly captivate audiences during some of the opera's most beloved numbers.
Guiding the evening's festivities will be hosts Nick Plummer, Melissa Sanderson, and Megan Armstrong-Davies, who promise to inject humour and heart throughout the concert. Under the adept direction of Kyla Thorburn, with Alastair Cockburn serving as Musical Director and Barend van der Westhuizen as Chorus Master, this concert staging of The Mikado is sure to be a richly musically engaging, visually stunning, and thoroughly entertaining homage to a theatrical masterpiece.
From iconic hits such as "A Wand'ring Minstrel I," "Three Little Maids from School Are We," and "I've Got a Little List," to exhilarating choral harmonies and razor-sharp satire, The Mikado - In Concert promises to be a feast for lovers of music, opera, and classic comedy. Don't miss this unique opportunity to celebrate a storied legacy and experience an unforgettable theatrical event.

The Queen presides over AI glitches & human glory
In as much as evergreen British hopes, riding high on former British No 1, Cameron Norrie, their last player standing in the Wimbledon Quarters, were dashed 6-2, 6-3,6-3 on the rock that is two-time defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz, the Brits can walk away with something to celebrate this week. For the first time in decades, they have a reigning monarch, Queen Camilla, as a regular in the Royal Box, genuinely applauding the King of Grass, Novak Djokovic, fighting off young pretenders to his 7x throne. Lest we forget Queen Elizabeth 11, was no tennis fan and only attended SW7 on her Silver Jubilee & the Championship's centenary. Moreover in tandem with the modernization of the monarchy, Wimbledon, the last bastion of traditionalism has loosened up like veteran Djokovic stretching his weary limbs to accommodate the onslaught of a new generation of aggressors and embraced not only A1 technology, but thrown caution to the wind regarding dress codes: Bare backs, mini skirts and pink hair were all on display in those plush seats behind the elegantly attired Queen. Fortunately Her Majesty was too intrigued by Djokovic's dramatic exhortations to the Gods above and his own box, at a set down against Italian, Flavio Cobolli to notice. Unfortunately whilst one can turn a blind eye to human errors of judgement, incessant computer glitches, that delay matches at critical moments are a little harder to ignore: Following a farcical episode, in which the umpire halted a match between Britain's Sonny Kartal and Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, because the electronic line calling device was accidentally switched off, costing the latter a point, Quarter Finalists, Taylor Swift and Karen Khachanov, were rudely interrupted mid rally, when the same machine incorrectly called 'fault' again. Be this an embarrassment to the All England Club, given British No 1s, Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper are among the protagonists asking for linesmen to be reinstated, Chief Executive, Sally Bolton displayed stiff upper lip, in refusing to be swayed in this giant leap towards A1. Djokovic proved as unwavering in guarding his own piece of Centre Court turf: It was painful to watch the Serbian icon struggling to fend off this new breed, proving a handful with their serve volleying skills, something he admitted to his nemesis, Roger Federer, also watching from the Royal Box, was still missing from his otherwise immaculate repertoire. However one can only admire the sheer depth of mental superiority from which Djokovic draws to escape defeat, when the chips were down against first Alex De Minaur and then Cobolli. World No 1, Jannik Sinner- Djokovic's Semis opponent- represented the ultimate test in mental fortitude. Frankly the Italian by his own admittance, should've been on a plane home. Instead Sinner has enjoyed more than a devils luck in this event; he evidently has the new Popes powerful blessing, because a tragedy dealt him his pass to the Semis: Brilliant 'Baby Federer' aka Grigor Dimitrov, employed the perfect aggressive volleying tactics to break Sinner's baseline rhythm, until at two sets up and two all in the third, the Bulgarian damaged a pectoral muscle, after serving an ace and was forced to retire from his third consecutive Slam, from a position of ascendency. If ever there were a veteran deserving of a Major win, it is Dimitrov. Instead the Gods rewarded 15th seed, American, Amanda Anisimova with a riveting Semis 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over World No 1, Aryna Sabalenka, to become the first American Wimbledon Finalist since Serena Williams. Meanwhile Alcaraz looks rock solid to break another record on his best surface.

The main moments of Paris Couture Week
Paris Haute Couture Week has wrapped up after four days of shows that featured the end of an era at Balenciaga, the start of a new one at Maison Margiela, and some surprise appearances and absences. AFP looks back on the key moments of the Autumn-Winter 2025-2026 season: - New eras - Demna bowed out at Balenciaga after a decade in charge with a show on Wednesday that drew the usual smattering of celebrities to the front rows but had some surprise models on the runway. Kim Kardashian channelled Elizabeth Taylor as she walked the room in a sultry slip dress, while veteran French actress Isabelle Huppert appeared in a turtleneck pulled up to her ears. Belgian Glenn Martens debuted at Maison Margiela the same day. Critics praised his bold first steps as a replacement for British design legend John Galliano, who stepped down in January. The New York Times called Martens' "Artisanal" collection, which included thrifted clothing, a "brilliant no-holds-barred debut" while Women's Wear Daily said it "tilted the Paris house in a dark, daring and DIY direction". - Armani's absence - One notably absentee was Giorgio Armani, 91, who had already cancelled his menswear show in Milan due to health reasons. AFP | Thomas SAMSON He also missed the Paris Armani Prive show on doctors' orders. "In 20 years of Armani Prive, it's the first time I'm not in Paris," he said in a statement sent to AFP. "My doctors advised more rest, even though I felt ready." He added that he had "followed and overseen every aspect of the show remotely", stressing: "I approved and signed off on everything you will see." - Cardi B's couture - New York rapper Cardi B had a busy week in Paris and seemed intent on out-couturing many of the models. AFP | Thomas SAMSON She appeared at the opening show of the week on Monday at Schiaparelli in a traf fic-stopping tasselled neckpiece and posed with a crow perched on her hand outside the Petit Palais exhibition space. The next day, she turned heads at Stephane Rolland, with a sculptural black headpiece that surrounded her like a religious shroud. On Wednesday she was front row at Balenciaga. - The rose trend - Floral patterns were everywhere, with the rose especially dominant. Giambattista Valli adorned airy gowns with oversized fabric roses, Elie Saab featured them on princess-style dresses, while Armani Prive used pearl-embroidered roses. Balenciaga incorporated rose sequin prints into a skirt suit and Robert Wun showcased black-and-white roses on a structured strapless crinoline dress. - Best of the rest - AFP | STEPHANE DE SAKUTIN Syrian designer Rami Al Ali made history as the first couturier from his country to take part in the official Paris calendar, choking back tears at the end of his show of exquisitely tailored pieces. Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf delivered a typically playful and sculptural spectacle, while Hong Kong's Robert Wun burnished his reputation further with some striking looks inspired by cinema and theatre.
