
BBC targets adults in the latest adventure for its top dog Bluey
Grateful executives are open about Bluey's status as the golden goose driving a record £2.16bn in sales from commercial operations last year, spawning branding deals for everything from headphones to baked beans.
They are now clear on the next target: turning Bluey from one of the world's top preschool favourites to an all-encompassing 'lifestyle brand' for all ages.
'Bluey's role is quite enormous,' said Suzy Raia, who heads global consumer products at BBC Studios, the corporation's commercial arm. 'We're just at the beginning of something that I hope will be a generation-defining brand for children and then families today. From a retail sales standpoint, we are generating about $3.6bn (£2.7bn) in global retail sales across our entire portfolio and Bluey is a really, really big chunk of that.'
The popularity of the cartoon heeler – an Australian dog bred to herd cattle – is a phenomenon. Bluey was the most watched show in the US across all genres in 2024 and kept that spot in the first half of this year.
Its music is also a hit and has been streamed 1bn times, as of last week.
The show has spawned a dizzying array of product deals. Fans can buy Bluey-inspired paddling pools, bumper cars, tents, hot-water bottles, board games and nappies – on top of the usual merchandise staples of lunch boxes, pyjamas, books and toys.
There is already a Bluey theatre production and Bluey's World – a 'one-of-a-kind guided immersive experience' – has opened in Queensland. Meanwhile, Bluey has an unprecedented deal with Lego covering regular Lego sets and Duplo, which is designed for preschool children.
Despite the BBC's background in traditional broadcasting, it has been the ability of BBC Studios to exploit digital channels such as YouTube and TikTok that has led executives to conclude Bluey can appeal to parents and young adults.
Bluey's official channels now have more than 21 million subscribers, amassing 13bn lifetime views. The show has almost 5 million TikTok followers.
Evan Shapiro, a Hollywood producer turned media analyst, said BBC Studios was leading the way in its understanding that digital platforms were now the drivers of brands and popular culture.
'The case study is Bluey,' he said. 'It isn't just a hit on TV. It is the size of [YouTube's biggest creator] MrBeast. Fandom is the engine of economics and growth. You follow the audience wherever they are.'
Raia said Bluey was on the way to becoming 'a true lifestyle brand' across the generations.
'Within seven months, we had a million TikTok subscribers,' said Raia. 'That was a moment where we were really able to find the fans that are not purely preschool – young adult audiences and teens really started to get this exposure.
'We want to be No 1 in preschool, which we're well on our way to achieving. We have so much more to do in terms of growing in the adult space and thinking about what those adult purchasers are open to.'
Bluey, produced by Ludo Studio in Australia, was originally co-commissioned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the BBC. However, BBC Studios owns Bluey's global distribution and merchandising rights. The BBC's annual report revealed its record commercial revenues were driven by 'the licensing of the Bluey brand in particular'.
Bluey's rise is to continue with the arrival of a movie in 2027. Disney has already announced it will be the first non-Disney children's brand to feature in its parks.
Hardened fans may worry about overexposure. However, Raia said her team remained cautious in its acceptance of product tie-ups. 'We say no, quite honestly, a lot more than we say yes,' she said.
Kathryn VanArendonk, a critic who is writing a book about the Bluey phenomenon, said its success as a brand came down to the evocative nature of the storytelling.
'Almost no children's television in the history of that genre has managed to do the thing that Bluey does,' she said. 'It is just as entertaining, accessible and emotionally meaningful for adults as it is for kids.
'Multiple audiences see their own desires, interests, concerns and challenges reflected back at them. That's just so hard to do and it's so incredibly appealing when something can pull it off.'

For many avid TV watchers, this writer included, it's been a while since we've had a gripping gameshow to sink our teeth into in the absence of The Traitors. Granted, we do have the celebrity version of the series launching very soon, but there's still an excruciating wait until that day comes. Fortunately for us, there's now a new competition on the horizon that'll hopefully scratch the itch in the best way possible – Destination X. Hosted by Gavin and Stacey star Rob, the show will see 13 competitors ride on a bus with blacked-out windows as they try to figure out where on Earth they are… literally. At the end of each episode, the contestants must place an X on a map to guess where in the world they are, and whoever's furthest away from the actual destination is eliminated, missing out on reaching the end and bagging the coveted £100,000 prize. On the new BBC programme Destination X, 13 contestants are going up against each other to win a £100,000 prize. All they need to do? Guess where in the world they are. However, it's not that simple. They're travelling around on a bus with blacked-out windows, and have to also occasionally wear special goggles to prevent them from seeing their surroundings. They do have clues that they can use to suss their location, but some of these clues could be red herrings. This is the first time that Destination X has aired in the UK, but this isn't the first iteration of the competition. The American version of the show launched earlier this year in May over in the US, helmed by The Walking Dead actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The series was originally based on the Belgian TV series Bestemming X, which premiered in February 2023. Destination X launches on Wednesday July 30 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. There will be two episodes a week, airing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In each episode, the participants must try to decipher all sorts of clues to figure out their location – but on one occasion, Rob came extraordinarily close to giving the game away. 'All the time when we are out and about on our travels, they are trying to keep players in the dark, so they aren't allowed to see anything, but more importantly to hear anything,' the 60-year-old said. 'For example, if a crew member went off to buy a coffee, they had to be careful not to come back with a branded coffee cup that might give away the name of where they were.' Then one time, the Would I Lie To You? host made a huge slip-up… which thankfully went unnoticed. 'I remember once we were at a particular location and I knew that in a few days' time we would be at another location and I said to somebody in the production team: 'Oh I can't wait until we get to X,' and then I suddenly realised one of the players was close and I thought 'Oh no what have you done?' – Luckily, they didn't hear me!' Rob lucked out there, that's for sure! While the actor and comedian has extensive experience on TV and in entertainment in general, Destination X is unlike any project he's ever done before. 'I've never done a TV show on this scale before. I loved the idea of it, the combination of having to work out clues as to where you are and having to get on with each other. It struck me as the best bits of The Traitors with the best bits of Race Across the World,' he shared. Fans slam 'atrocious' immersive Elvis Presley show with tickets up to £300
A newly opened high-tech Elvis Presley show in London that initially promised an AI hologram of the star on stage has been blasted by punters as 'a shambles from start to finish'. Elvis Evolution was announced in January 2024 with a life-sized, digital Elvis as its golden ticket item which would perform 'iconic moments in musical history on a UK stage for the first time'. The show also claimed it would use the smells and weather of Memphis to fully 'immerse' guests in the experience. Creator Andrew McGuinness of Layered Reality promised at the time that 'intricate sets' would help make ticketholders 'feel like you've time travelled' – but punters now beg to differ. Elvis Evolution officially opened on July 18, with tickets priced from £75 to £300 for the super VIP experience, including booking fees. However, some who have already attended the event have felt let down as there is no Elvis hologram after all. They instead described the show as 'absolutely atrocious', with Tracey Baldwin telling the BBC that 'you could have seen this at the local theatre for £30'. 'It was a shambles from start to finish, there was no Elvis, it was just a video of him that you could watch on YouTube,' she added, claiming that disappointed ticketholders left the show early. She also said she felt that Layered Reality had been unfair to older fans and 'taken us for a fool by scamming us with technology that we won't understand'. 'A small number of people have pointed out that they were expecting a hologram concert, due to the initial announcement made in January 2024. As with many complex productions that are two years in the making, the concept developed from those early stages, and this was made clear when tickets went on sale in October 2024,' a spokesperson for Layered Reality told the outlet. A Metro piece discussing Elvis Evolution with its creators ahead of tickets going on sale did not mention the Elvis hologram teased months earlier, with the team instead focusing on discussing its 'deeply personal and interactive format' and promising it would be 'a memory-making experience'. The spokesperson continued: 'We ultimately took the creative decision not to mimic Elvis's performances. Those moments proved to be too iconic and irreplaceable. Instead, we use AI to upscale archive footage and in moments we know happened but where no footage existed, offering a new lens into his world.' They also said the show has been praised by fans and they had been 'overwhelmed by the feedback, with many describing it as fun, immersive and unlike anything they've seen before', according to the publication. There is no mention of any Elvis hologram on the experience's website. Rather it mentions that Elvis Evolution 'will use generative AI to deliver intimate moments, giving you exclusive glimpses behind the scenes, at never seen before moments in Elvis' history'. It also claims the show uses 'groundbreaking digital techniques to bring the musical icon to life' and points to a partnership with the custodians of the Presley estate, which allowed access to personal photos and home-videos. According to those who have seen Elvis Evolution, live actors playing different characters guide guests through the King's childhood and friendship with Sam Bell, as well as his career, in various themed locations, including a train carriage and a diner. After an interval in a Hawaii-themed bar – complete with an Elvis cardboard cut-out for photo opportunities – ticketholders are then taken through to experience the King's 1968 comeback special concert broadcast on NBC as audience members. Superfans Linzi Naldrett and Zoe Finch described the show as 'bizarre' and said that there was 'nothing in it that you've not seen before' if you're an Elvis fan. Linzi also questioned where the 'AI immersive aspect came into it', saying of the grand final recreation: 'All it is is a projection on the back wall of the 1968 show, which you can buy on DVD or watch on iPlayer.' Musicians also play live alongside the concert footage, according to photos from the event, as well as another separate band during the experience. Skipping out on the included afterparty, she added to The Daily Star: 'At one point, I just had second hand embarrassment for the actors dancing and there was [sic.] a few young girls in tears of laughter at how awkward it all was.' Elvis Evolution has also been met with mixed professional reviews, with The Telegraph awarding it just one star and slamming its 'limp and indifferent offerings' and 'underwhelming' partial recreation of the 1968 special, saying it is 'not worth a tenth of the price'. However, TimeOut gave it three stars and called it 'a slick affair, heartfelt in its admiration for The King' even if comes with 'a difficult-to-defend ticket price'. Critic Andrzej Łukowski revealed in a tweet alongside his review that people in his show's audience were 'actively booing it' although he felt it was 'actually basically fine, but still it probably needs a rethink'. CityAM went one step further, awarding the show four stars and calling the experience 'incredibly touching'. More Trending The breadth of reaction continued on social media too, with @bigboyb on X tweeting: 'Awful from start to finish. Felt like a GCSE performance on a shoestring budget.' But according to the BBC some ticketholders on Facebook praised the experience as 'well-acted, innovative, exciting and a whole lot of fun', and another added that 'the majority of people were having fun'. Nick Cave shares poignant reflection a decade on from son's death
Musician Nick Cave has shared a poignant reflection on the loss of his son, Arthur, 10 years after his death. Arthur was just 15 when he died on 15 July 2015 after falling from a cliff in Brighton. Responding to a fan question on his Red Hand Files website, Cave, 67, discussed how grief evolves, becoming 'less a personal affront' and 'more a poetic quality of being'. He explained that he learned he is 'part of a common human story' and that sorrow can grow 'richer, deeper, and more textured'.
