Airbus inks $20 billion Malaysia jet deals on PM Anwar's Europe trade trip

Al Arabiyaa day ago
Malaysia's biggest airlines sealed Airbus SE deals worth $20 billion as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wrapped up his European tour.
AirAsia Bhd. reached a tentative agreement to purchase as many as 70 extended-range Airbus single-aisle jets that could reach $12.3 billion. Malaysia Airlines Bhd. ordered 20 more A330neo widebody planes, in a deal worth $7.5 billion, according to Bloomberg calculations before industry discounts are applied.
With aircraft diplomacy taking center stage, the Malaysian government also said it was planning to purchase two maritime patrol aircraft for the Royal Malaysian Navy, 28 Leonardo SpA AW149 helicopters, and naval vessels from Italy to bolster its security, Bernama reported Friday, citing the prime minister.
The buying spree, particularly for commercial jets, comes as both Airbus and its American rival Boeing Co. benefit from trade visits and bilateral tariff negotiations.
Boeing's bumper $96 billion deal for 210 aircraft for Qatar Airways was announced during US President Donald Trump's Middle East tour in May. An order for 32 Boeing 787 Dreamliners by British Airways parent IAG SA was the centerpiece of a new US-UK trade deal.
Jet expansion
AirAsia signed a memorandum of understanding covering 50 A321XLR jets with options for 20 more, according to a company statement on Friday. Under the provisional agreement, Airbus's longest-range narrowbody jet will begin arriving by 2028, Tony Fernandes, chief executive officer of AirAsia parent Capital A Bhd., told reporters.
'A narrowbody obviously gives us a lot less risk in terms of starting new routes,' he said on a video call. 'This order allows us to have a narrowbody fleet that can cover the world.'
AirAsia, one of Southeast Asia's largest budget carriers, plans to use the XLRs to open up routes in China, India and other parts of the Asia-Pacific that would be uneconomical for larger planes requiring more fuel, Fernandes said.
AirAsia plans to open a Gulf hub this year and extend its flight network to some European destinations. Capital A is also seeking a secondary listing in Hong Kong.
The airline is looking to order up to 150 more jets to complete its 15-year strategy, Fernandes said. He said the company is in talks with Airbus over the fate of an earlier order for A330 widebodies, an aircraft category he'd prefer to exit.
Malaysia Airlines, the country's national carrier, doubled its commitment of A330neos to renew its aging fleet and fuel its long-haul expansion. Once all delivered, that would take its fleet to 40 of the re-engined fuel-efficient widebody. Deliveries for the additional order are planned between 2029 and 2031.
'This additional order reinforces our long-term vision of building a future-ready fleet that supports sustainable growth, delivers consistent value to our passengers, and strengthens our competitiveness in key markets,' the airline's Group Managing Director Izham Ismail said in a statement on Saturday.
Anwar was in France for his inaugural visit as prime minister at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron. France is one of Malaysia's top five trading partners within the European Union and a key source of foreign direct investment in high-technology and strategic sectors, according to Malaysia's Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Saudi Aramco raises August Arab light crude OSP for Asia

RIYADH: Saudi Aramco has raised its official selling price for its flagship Arab Light crude oil destined for Asia in August, the company confirmed in an official statement on Sunday. The state-owned company raised the price of its benchmark oil to $2.20 per barrel above the average of Oman and Dubai crude prices. The August price for Arab Light crude oil has risen by $1 per barrel from July, reaching its highest level since April, when it was priced $3.50 above the Oman/Dubai average. Saudi Aramco prices its crude oil across five density-based grades: Super Light (greater than 40), Arab Extra Light (36-40), Arab Light (32-36), Arab Medium (29-32), and Arab Heavy (below 29). The company's monthly pricing decisions impact the cost of around 9 million barrels per day of crude exported to Asia and serve as a pricing benchmark for other major regional producers, including Iran, Kuwait, and Iraq. Aramco also raised August prices for Arab Extra Light by $1.30 per barrel and Arab Heavy by $0.90. The price hikes follow a decision by eight OPEC+ members to increase production by 548,000 barrels per day in August, further accelerating output growth. In the North American market, Aramco set the August OSP for Arab Light at $3.90 per barrel above the Argus Sour Crude Index. Aramco determines its OSPs based on market feedback from refiners and an evaluation of crude oil value changes over the past month, taking into account yields and product prices.

Saudi Arabia's Booming Tourism Fuels Hotel Bookings and Local Hiring

Saudi Arabia's tourism sector has continued its rapid growth, driving record demand for hotels and hospitality services and creating new jobs across the Kingdom. The Saudi General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) reported that hotel occupancy rose 2.1% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, reaching nearly 63%. In contrast, serviced apartments saw occupancy dip to about 50.7%, reflecting shifting visitor preferences and price dynamics. Talal Al-Muhaideb, General Manager of Al-Sarh Travel and Tourism, said his company recorded a 28% jump in bookings, including hotels, flights, and tours, compared with the same period last year. He attributed the surge to Saudi Arabia's rising profile as a destination, improved infrastructure, and more sophisticated tourism offerings. He noted that Gulf and Asian travelers drove much of the demand, with bookings concentrated in hotels rather than serviced apartments. 'Visitors are coming for leisure, cultural experiences, business, and major events,' he underlined. Al-Muhaideb added that Saudis now make up 48% of management roles at the company, with plans underway to increase local hiring in line with Vision 2030 targets. 'We have an ambitious strategy to expand recruitment and empower Saudi talent across all departments,' he explained. Tourism specialist Abdullah Al-Suqabi stressed the importance of training partnerships with institutes specializing in hospitality and hotel management to further develop Saudi staff. 'Skill development is essential to strengthening the sector and boosting local employment,' he said. Technology is also reshaping the industry. Faisal Al-Otaibi, an investor in the Jathir Inn rental platform, noted that the app has seen rising demand thanks to secure payment systems and transparent pricing. 'Bookings have climbed significantly, and the growth has directly increased my revenues,' he said, adding that travelers now arrive year-round from across the country. Average daily hotel rates slipped to 477 riyals ($127), down 3.4%, while serviced apartment rates rose 7.2% to 209 riyals ($55). The figures suggest changing demand patterns and possibly a more diverse customer base. Guest stays in hotels held steady at 4.1 nights, while serviced apartment stays declined to an average of 2.1 nights. Overall, the tourism sector recorded 4.1% employment growth in the first quarter, with Saudis representing nearly 25% of the workforce - totaling 234,000 Saudi employees working across nearly a thousand tourism businesses.

China Retaliates to EU Ban with Import Restrictions on Medical Devices

China's finance ministry said on Sunday it was restricting government purchases of medical devices from the European Union that exceed 45 million yuan ($6.3 million) in value, in retaliation to Brussels' own curbs last month. Tensions between Beijing and Brussels have been rising, with the European Union imposing tariffs on China-built electric vehicles and Beijing slapping duties on imported brandy from the bloc. The European Union said last month it was barring Chinese companies from participating in EU public tenders for medical devices worth 60 billion euros ($70 billion) or more per year after concluding that EU firms were not given fair access in China. The measure announced by the European Commission was the first under the EU's International Procurement Instrument, which entered into force in 2022 and is designed to ensure reciprocal market access. China's countermeasures were expected after its commerce ministry flagged "necessary steps" against the EU move late last month. "Regrettably, despite China's goodwill and sincerity, the EU has insisted on going its own way, taking restrictive measures and building new protectionist barriers," Reuters quoted the commerce ministry as saying in a separate statement on Sunday. "Therefore, China has no choice but to adopt reciprocal restrictive measures." The EU delegation office in Beijing did not immediately respond to a request for comment. China will also restrict imports of medical devices from other countries that contain EU-made components worth more than 50% of the contract value, the finance ministry said. The measures come into force on Sunday. The commerce ministry said products from European companies in China were not affected. The world's second- and third-largest economies are due to hold a leaders' summit in China later in July.
