Convicted fraudster Billy McFarland (under)sells Fyre Festival on eBay

Billy McFarland, the scam artist and convicted fellon who gained notoriety for the disastrous 2017 Fyre Festival, has officially sold the rights to the event's brand on eBay for $245,300 (approx. €211,135).
The auction, which reportedly drew a 175 bids, included intellectual property, trademarks, and social media accounts tied to the Fyre name.
The identity of the buyer remains unknown.
In a livestream during the eBay auction, McFarland appeared disappointed with the result, commenting: 'Damn. This sucks, it's so low.'
According to Rolling Stone, the sale will barely make a dent in his outstanding $26 million (approx. €22.3m) restitution order tied to his criminal conviction.
Nonetheless, the disgraced founder took to social media after the sale, saying: 'Fyre Festival is just one chapter of my story, and I'm excited to move onto my next one.'
He continued: 'The auction became the most-watched non-charity listing on eBay during its run, proving once again that attention is currency, and views are the root of attention. That belief is at the core of what I'm building next.'
McFarland then shared that he's working on a 'tech platform designed to capture and power the value behind every view online.'
Cue: death by a thousand eyerolls.

McFarland was given a six-year prison sentence in 2018 for wire fraud related to the original Fyre Festival. He was released early in 2022 and attempted to relaunch the event multiple times - without success.
What happened at Fyre Festival?
McFarland founded Fyre Festival with rapper Ja Rule. As part of their advertising scheme for the supposed luxury music festival, they employed influencers including Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski to post on Instagram about the festival.
The influencers didn't clearly disclose that it was a paid advert.
McFarland also falsely claimed that the festival's location was on Pablo Escobar's private island.
In reality, it was located on a beach in the Bahamas, and when the glamorous (and wannabe glamorous) flocked to McFarland's promised luxury event in 2017, all was not as it seemed.
When the punters arrived, they were confronted with unfinished stages, tents instead of fancy accommodation, and a notoriously rubbish welcome meal of some pre-sliced cheese and a depressing-looking salad on dry bread.
As for the star-studded line-up of acts including Pusha T, Tyger, Blink-182, Disclosure, Migos, and Skepta... They all pulled out.
To make matters worse, the 500+ guests were stranded on the island, as flights were cancelled by the Bahamian government.
The ordeal was captured in the Netflix documentary FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, as well as the Hulu doc Fyre Fraud.
McFarland and Ja Rule were hit with multiple lawsuits for fraud and other charges seeking damages.
McFarland was investigated by the FBI for mail fraud, wire fraud and securities fraud. After pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud, he was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to hand over $26 million.
Since his release from prison, McFarland reportedly arranged meetings with rappers for Donald Trump's most recent election campaign – in a bid to reach and appeal to more Black voters.

And because once a scammer, always a hardened scammer, McFarland has tried to revive the festival – adventurously named Fyre Fest II.
It was announced that the second edition of the festival would be taking place on a tropical island off Cancún, Mexico. However, it was soon revealed that the permit McFarland had obtained only allowed for a 12-hour listening party that only could have fewer than 300 people.
McFarland set the tickets for between $1,400 (€1,200) and $25,000 (€21,500) – with 'premium packages' priced as high as $1.1 million (€947,000).
As you can guess, the Fyre Fest II never took place.
Now that the rights to the Fyre brand have been sold, anyone else fearing the outcome of McFarland's new tech platform 'designed to capture and power the value behind every view online'?

"Surgeon linked to Brigitte Macron transgender speculation found dead," says a July 3, 2025 post on X. "Solidifies suspicion that Macron is married to an XY Groomer." The video opens by showing first responders parked below a Parisian building, with a voiceover and subtitles claiming it is the site where the surgeon, François Faivre, fell to his death. The clip goes on to depict what purports to be an interview with the dead man's sister, Anne Dupont. Then it claims to show a portion of an initial interview the surgeon gave about Brigitte Macron to the magazine Closer before his death. "According to Ms. Dupont, her brother is a colleague of the famous doctor Patrick Bui," the subtitles say. "François Faivre had promised journalists he would shed light on the controversial surgical operations of Mrs. Brigitte Macron." The rumor that a surgeon died before releasing further information on Brigitte Macron spread in articles and in posts across Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok and YouTube. The claims were widespread in French and also appeared in Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese and Russian. Many posts reference the "Enquête du jour" website, where the video and an accompanying article appear to have originated. In January, Owens released the "Becoming Brigitte" series, which claimed without substantive evidence that Brigitte Macron was not only formerly a man, but also Emmanuel Macron's blood relative. It also alleged Emmanuel Macron became France's president as part of CIA mind-control program, reigniting longstanding French conspiracy theories. On July 23, the Macrons filed a defamation suit against Owens in the US state of Delaware. More iterations of the dead-doctor narrative followed. "Of course they waited until now the file this lawsuit," says one July 24 Facebook post. "The doctor who did Brigitte's surgeries conveniently died last month." But like Owens's allegations about Brigitte Macron's gender history, the online claims that her surgeon died under suspicious circumstances are unfounded. The doctor referenced in the claims does not appear to exist, and the purported news reports cite evidence that is manipulated or entirely invented. The fabricated "François Faivre" The video claims François Faivre worked at the American Hospital of Paris alongside Patrick Bui, who supposedly spoke to him about Brigitte Macron undergoing a transgender surgery operation. While Bui does appear on the hospital's website, the medical center told AFP July 8 it had "no record of a cosmetic surgeon named François Faivre being able to practice there" (archived here). Searches of the French health insurance directory surfaced no matching results for a doctor named "François Faivre." The rail moulding on the wall disappears abruptly, and one of the hanging certificates trails off into illegible gibberish -- both common indicators of images generated be artificial intelligence. Brazil' s Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that former president Jair Bolsonaro would not be taken into detention -- for now -- during his trial for allegedly plotting a coup. But the court warned the 70-year-old would be imprisoned immediately if he violated restrictions, including a ban on using social media that was imposed last week. The far-right politician is on trial for allegedly plotting a coup to cling to power after losing the 2022 election to leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. On Friday the court slapped restrictions on Bolsonaro amid suspicion he was trying to disrupt the trial. He is now forced to wear an electronic ankle bracelet and cannot use social media. And third parties are not allowed to retransmit his public remarks. But Judge Alexandre de Moraes considered it an "isolated irregularity" that social media accounts of one of Bolsonaro's sons, Eduardo Bolsonaro, "were used in his favor." Bolsonaro made a speech Monday that went viral on social media, but he did not post the speech from his own account -- his sons and allies did. Moraes -- with whom Bolsonaro has clashed often -- cited posts from accounts on X, Instagram and Facebook with videos, images and text from Bolsonaro's speech. According to Moraes, the former president "delivered a speech to be shown on digital platforms." The former president appeared before the cameras this week to show the ankle monitor on his left foot. "This is a symbol of the utmost humiliation," he said. "What matters to me is God's law," he added, rejecting the court's rulings. The Trump factor US President Donald Trump, who counts Bolsonaro among his allies, has waded into the trial, accusing the Brazilian authorities of conducting a witch hunt.
