First Australian-Made Rocket Crashes 14 Seconds After Launch Of Flight
Australia's first locally made orbital rocket, Eris, launched by Gilmour Space Technologies, crashed 14 seconds after liftoff during a test flight in Queensland.
The first Australian-made rocket crashed after 14 seconds of flight on Wednesday as it attempted to reach orbit from the country's soil.
The rocket Eris, launched by Gilmour Space Technologies, was the first Australian-designed and manufactured orbital launch vehicle to lift off from the country and was designed to carry small satellites to orbit.
It launched Wednesday morning local time in a test flight from a spaceport near the small town of Bowen in the north of Queensland state.
In a video of the launch, the rocket appeared to clear the launch tower and hovered in the air before falling out of sight.
Plumes of smoke were seen rising above the site.
No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, the company hailed the launch as a success in a statement posted to Facebook.
According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson said all four hybrid-propelled engines ignited and the maiden flight included 23 seconds of engine burn time and 14 seconds of flight.
Gilmour Space Technologies had planned previous launches of the rocket, in May and earlier this month, but called off those operations because of technical issues and bad weather.
CEO Adam Gilmour said in a statement he was pleased the rocket got off the launchpad.
'Of course I would have liked more flight time but happy with this," he wrote on LinkedIn.
In February, Gilmour had said that it was 'almost unheard of" for a private rocket company to successfully launch to orbit on its first attempt.
The firm had earlier said it would consider the launch a success if the rocket left the ground. The launch site infrastructure 'remained intact," the statement read.
Gilmour Space Technologies has private funders and was awarded a 5 million Australian dollar ($3.2 million) grant this month from the country's federal government for the development of the Eris rocket.
It followed the firm's 52 million Australian dollar grant agreement with the government in 2023 to advance the development and commercialisation of new space technologies in Australia.

India-US partnership weathered many challenges
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) India on Friday brushed aside US President Donald Trump's diatribe against it, saying the partnership between the two countries 'weathered" several transitions and challenges. The comments by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) came a day after Trump imposed 25 per cent tariff on India and described the Indian economy as 'dead". 'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. 'This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges," he said at his weekly media briefing. 'We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward," Jaiswal said. To questions on India-US defence ties, Jaiswal said the two countries have a strong defence partnership which has been strengthened over the last several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further, he said. On India's energy procurement, Jaiswal said it is driven by national interest. 'In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances," he said. NAREDCO seeks faster approval for real estate projects to boost supply
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Realtors' body NAREDCO on Friday demanded that the government streamline the approval process for development of real estate projects to boost supply of housing and commercial properties. National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) also announced the 17th edition of its flagship National Convention, which will be held during August 29-30 in the national capital. The convention's official logo was unveiled by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In a press conference held here, NAREDCO Chairman Niranjan Hiranandani expressed concern over fall in sales of affordable housing because of several factors, including high land cost that makes development of low-cost homes very difficult for private builders. He also spoke about huge shortage of skilled workforce for construction of real estate projects and suggested need for collaboration between the government and industry associations to train unskilled workers. 'At one end we have a problem of unemployment and at the other end we have shortage of skilled workers," Hiranandani added. NAREDCO President G Hari Babu demanded that the central and state governments streamline the approval process for real estate projects as this would result in faster development with reduced input costs. He also pointed about delays in getting registration certificates from real estate regulatory authorities to launch projects. On the affordable housing, Hari Babu stressed on the need to focus on slum redevelopment across all states to free land parcels for development of real estate projects. 'Land is a problem for private real estate developers, not for the government," he quipped. On the upcoming convention, Hari Babu said more than 1,000 people are expected to participate in the two-day event. 'The sector's ability to attract global capital, improve last-mile project delivery, and serve end-users depends on how quickly we resolve policy friction points like delays in approvals, inadequate rental frameworks, and high construction input costs," the NAREDCO President said.
