Punjab govt eases family pension rules for NPS employees

Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Saturday announced that the finance department had withdrawn a key option clause for new pension scheme (NPS) employees to receive family or invalid pension. Terming it a move to support the families of state govt employees, he said this decision comes after the govt recognised the undue hardship caused to the families of employees who died in harness, as most did not formally exercise this option. In a press statement, Cheema said the govt previously extended additional relief in the form of a family or invalid pension to NPS employees who became disabled or died while in service through finance department instructions dated Oct 8, 2021. However, Clause 6 of these instructions required both existing and newly recruited employees to choose within a specific timeframe whether they wanted to receive the family or invalid pension or the benefits of the NPS scheme. He said that this condition created significant difficulties for families who were unaware of the requirement or were unable to complete the process. Cheema said the finance department has now deleted Clause 6 of the instructions on June 27, 2025, to rectify the issue. He said this change, which was initially implemented for Punjab govt NPS employees, has now been extended to include NPS employees of boards, corporations, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and state autonomous bodies (SABs). "This ensures that all employees under the NPS are now eligible for the additional relief without having to formally exercise the option," he added. Country's youth being beaten with lathis simply for asking questions about their future: Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has criticised Delhi Police for unleashing a lathicharge on students and teachers protesting at Jantar Mantar against the alleged irregularities in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examination. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said the BJP-led Modi government has once again exposed its dictatorial mindset by mercilessly beating those who dared to raise questions about their future. Arvind Kejriwal on Friday called it a direct assault on the dreams and aspirations of India's youth. Sharing a video of the police's brutal action on social media platform X, he stated: "The country's youth are out on the streets, facing police batons, simply for asking questions about their future. SSC exams have the power to change the lives of lakhs of youth, but when the entire process itself comes under suspicion, how can trust remain? These lathis haven't just struck young bodies--they've struck at the hopes and dreams of an entire generation. The youth are now asking: how long will the system continue to mock our hard work? The government will have to answer." AAP has expressed full support for the students and teachers demanding accountability and transparency in the SSC recruitment process. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Premium 1 BHK at Mahindra Citadel – Coming Soon! Students are demanding a transparent and fair examination system. The company that received the tender failed to conduct examinations properly at several centres. It had previously been blacklisted after its involvement in the Indore Patwari exam scam. Yet, the same company was entrusted with conducting one of the most significant exams in the country, second only to the UPSC. The AAP has asserted that the anger of the students is entirely justified. The government's repeated failures have led to a situation where even highly educated students cannot sit for their exams without facing irregularities. The students' demands were legitimate--they were only trying to present their case before the SSC Commission.

Cancellations, glitches, wrong exam centre: Here's why SSC aspirants are protesting in Delhi

Massive disruptions during the Staff Selection Commission's (SSC) Selection Post Phase 13 examination have triggered a wave of protests across Delhi this week, bringing thousands of aspirants to the streets and also resulting in a strong backlash on social media. The aspirants protested at Jantar Mantar and the CGO Complex, demanding accountability from one of India's largest recruitment bodies, following complaints of technical glitches and exam-day confusion. They have sought a complete review of the examination process, a rollback or reassessment of the vendor contract, and an independent investigation into the failures. Held between July 24 and August 1, the computer-based Phase 13 examination process was allegedly marred by abrupt cancellations, software crashes, biometric verification failures, and incorrect exam centre allotments. Many candidates who had travelled long distances at their own expense to their examination centres were disappointed to note that their exams had been cancelled without prior notice. The alleged mismanagement is largely attributed to a recent change in the Commission's exam vendor. The protesters alleged that the new vendor lacked the experience and technical capacity to manage large-scale recruitment drives. 'The vendor's failure to smoothly conduct even an examination like Phase 13 has intensified concerns,' said Ronak Khatri, president of Delhi University Students Union, who was among the agitators on Saturday. Khatri told The Indian Express, 'I was there at the protest to raise issues of the students. The exam centres were away, several students missed their exams and there were several technical glitches which did not allow students to perform to their best.' Anger has spilled onto social media, with hashtags like #SSCMisManagement, #SSCSystemSudharo, and #JusticeForAspirants trending nationally. Students have shared images and videos from test centres and protest sites, highlighting instances of mismanagement and alleged mistreatment by security staff. The crisis escalated with the emergence of viral clips showing clashes between students and officials at some centres. In several locations, aspirants claimed they were manhandled or removed from premises for questioning procedural lapses. Aspirants and educators gathered this week in large numbers in New Delhi under the banner of a 'Delhi Chalo' campaign, raising a call for systemic reform. The protests took a more serious turn after reports emerged of police action at the demonstration sites. Students alleged that security personnel resorted to lathi charges to disperse crowds, leading to further outrage and condemnation online. The present crisis has also raised concerns among the aspirants of SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam scheduled to begin on August 13.
