Punjab govt eases family pension rules for NPS employees
Terming it a move to support the families of state govt employees, he said this decision comes after the govt recognised the undue hardship caused to the families of employees who died in harness, as most did not formally exercise this option.
In a press statement, Cheema said the govt previously extended additional relief in the form of a family or invalid pension to NPS employees who became disabled or died while in service through finance department instructions dated Oct 8, 2021.
However, Clause 6 of these instructions required both existing and newly recruited employees to choose within a specific timeframe whether they wanted to receive the family or invalid pension or the benefits of the NPS scheme.
He said that this condition created significant difficulties for families who were unaware of the requirement or were unable to complete the process.
Cheema said the finance department has now deleted Clause 6 of the instructions on June 27, 2025, to rectify the issue. He said this change, which was initially implemented for Punjab govt NPS employees, has now been extended to include NPS employees of boards, corporations, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and state autonomous bodies (SABs). "This ensures that all employees under the NPS are now eligible for the additional relief without having to formally exercise the option," he added.

Punjab to set up special fraud detection unit to check GST violations
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chandigarh, Aug 4 (PTI) Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday said a state-level special fraud detection unit will be set up in Patiala to uncover and probe high-value Goods and Services Tax violations. This dedicated unit will detect and investigate GST frauds, with particular focus on breaking down circular trading operations, unearthing benami transactions, and eliminating the practice of fake invoicing. 'The Special Fraud Detection Unit (SFDU) will be empowered to initiate stringent enforcement actions, including cancellation of suspicious GST Identification Numbers (GSTIN), blocking wrongful Input Tax Credit claims, and recommending prosecution against offenders to uphold legal accountability," he added. Cheema said the SFDU will leverage advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, data analytics and centralised back-end operations to enhance its detection capabilities. The unit will conduct comprehensive data mining and pattern recognition across the state to identify anomalies in tax returns, transaction networks, and goods movement, he said. The finance minister added that the unit will use data-driven red flags to selectively verify only dubious taxpayers, protecting honest taxpayers from unnecessary scrutiny. Detailing the composition of the SFDU, Cheema stated that the unit will comprise a multidisciplinary team consisting of experienced tax officers, skilled IT professionals, a chartered accountant, and a legal officer. He said this team will be equipped with real-time access to critical data sets such as GSTN information, e-way bill tracking, toll records, and RFID (radio frequency identification) trail analytics, enabling prompt and precise action against tax evasion. Cheema informed that the SFDU will be empowered by robust legal provisions under relevant sections of the CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) and Punjab GST Acts. He said this will enable the SFDU to function as a technologically advanced, intelligence-driven enforcement agency. 'This initiative marks a decisive step toward safeguarding the state's revenue and dismantling elaborate tax fraud networks that threaten economic integrity," said Cheema. The minister said the SFDU will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the state's revenue and promoting a culture of compliance by taking proactive measures to detect and prevent tax evasion, ultimately contributing to the state's economic stability and growth. Kerala slams Centre's move to permit offshore atomic minerals mining
Offshore mining rules are threat to coastal livelihoods Kerala's coastline, along with parts of Odisha and Tamil Nadu, is known for its rich deposits of beach sand minerals that contain thorium—crucial for India's nuclear energy ambitions. Rajeeve said the rules would disproportionately impact Kerala, home to public sector undertakings involved in beach sand mineral processing. 'This will jeopardise not just the operations of these PSUs but also the thousands employed by them,' he said. Equally alarming, according to the state, is the environmental damage that deep-sea mining can cause. 'Offshore atomic minerals mining will severely disrupt fragile marine habitats, destroy fish stocks, and collapse food chains,' the minister warned. 'It will directly affect the livelihoods of lakhs of traditional fishers who depend on these waters.' He accused the Centre of ignoring Kerala's repeated objections while moving forward with plans to permit exploration and mining in areas adjacent to the state's maritime boundaries. 'The sudden notification of these rules, without dialogue or transparency, is unacceptable,' he said. Calling the move an 'injustice to coastal states,' Rajeeve demanded the complete withdrawal of the Offshore Areas Atomic Minerals Rules, 2025. 'The Centre must understand that this is not merely a matter of resource exploitation — it is a question of environmental protection, constitutional rights, and human survival,' he said.
