Yoga sessions to be held at over 4,000 locations in U.P. on Int'l Yoga Day
In the run up to the day, Yoga Week will commence from June 15 during which various programmes will be conducted at the district, tehsil, block, and village panchayat levels. These include mass yoga sessions, seminars, workshops, symposiums, speech competitions, rangoli contests, essay writing, and slogan competitions to raise awareness and encourage public participation.
As part of the nationwide celebration, mass yoga demonstrations will take place at 1,00,000 locations across the country, with 4,075 in Uttar Pradesh following the Common Yoga Protocol on June 21, said the press statement.
Principal secretary AYUSH, Ranjan Kumar, said 5,000 trained yoga instructors have been prepared to promote yoga across the state. These trainers will lead yoga sessions in different parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Principals and managers of AYUSH colleges have formed various committees to ensure the successful organisation of Yoga Week. Through these committees, yoga-related programmes will also be held in medical, vocational, and other educational institutions.
On the occasion, a large-scale yoga demonstration will be held simultaneously across the entire state. To commemorate the completion of 10 years of International Yoga Day, a special 'Yoga Sangam' programme will also be organised, covering every district of the country.
At least 1,000 yoga parks will be established across India through local bodies. Three parks have been identified in districts with divisional headquarters, and two each in other districts. These parks will be developed with the help of the Urban Development Department. Local municipalities and panchayats will also support the initiative so that more people can benefit from practicing yoga.
A new initiative is being started by connecting yoga with environmental protection.
Along with yoga practice at natural locations, tree plantation and cleanliness drives will be carried out. Under this plan, yoga sessions and plantation programmes will be held near 'Amrit Sarovars' (rejuvenated water bodies). Yoga sessions and cleanliness drives will also be organised at major rivers, lakes, and parks across the state.
On the final day of Yoga Week on June 21, a prize distribution and certificate ceremony will be organised.

Real bonds or reel friends? Youngsters reassess online friendships
Patna: In an increasingly interconnected world, the nature of friendship is being reshaped by social media and rapid technological advancement. From the first point of contact to how bonds are maintained across distances, digital platforms have redefined friendships, offering both convenience and complexity. This Friendship Day, young people are reflecting on what it truly means to be a "friend" in the digital era. While online platforms offer multiple avenues for communication, there is broad agreement that in-person interaction remains unmatched. Many young people acknowledge that packed schedules, geographical distance, and a lack of common free time often push them towards digital connections. Ayush Anand, a private sector employee in Patna, relies primarily on Instagram to keep in touch with friends. "I can connect there by sharing memes and reels. Without speaking, one can still feel connected," he he prefers meeting in person to create lasting memories, Ayush also maintains longstanding online friendships. "There are many online friends I've never met in person, but we've been connected for the past eight to nine years. We were all added to a cricket group on an instant messaging app. There were about 250 members, but a few of us became real friends," he said.A recurring concern among the youth is the uncertainty over the authenticity of online personas. Many question how one can truly know someone without meeting them face-to-face. Yet, paradoxically, some find comfort in online friendships, citing a lower risk of disappointment due to the limited emotional investment at the outset. Satyam Kumar, a resident of Nehru Nagar, prefers the same instant messaging platform for its group chat feature. "Friends share memes and reels and that starts conversations without needing to talk constantly," he said. Though he has numerous online acquaintances, he considers those connections relatively shallow. "Real closeness still needs real-world interaction," he added. Dr Niska Sinha, a senior psychiatrist at IGIMS, Patna, describes today's digital friendships as characterised by an "easy connect, easy disconnect" dynamic. "For younger children, what they see as friendship is often an addiction to online engagement," she Sinha acknowledged the positives of digital interaction, such as keeping in touch with distant friends, building communities for those who feel isolated, and connecting individuals with shared interests. However, she warned that these interactions can lack emotional depth. "The absence of non-verbal cues and emotional nuance online can hinder true understanding. Over-reliance on digital communication may paradoxically heighten feelings of loneliness," she advises young people to use digital platforms as a supplement — not a substitute — for real-life interactions. "Don't hesitate to take breaks and invest time in nurturing friendships offline," she added. Uttar Pradesh numero uno in Amrit Sarovars construction
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the state with the highest number of Amrit Sarovars in the country, having constructed and rejuvenated 16,630 ponds — three times the original target of 5,550 — since the launch of the programme in 2022. This project, along with others aimed at improving the state's groundwater situation received a fresh impetus this week as the state observes 'Groundwater Week'. Madhya Pradesh secured the second spot with 5,839 ponds, followed by Chhattisgarh (2,902), Bihar (2,613), Haryana (2,088), Jharkhand (2,048), and Punjab (1,450), said a govt spokesperson. The state govt has also launched several other water conservation initiatives. These include the Khet Talab Yojana, efforts to revive extinct rivers through the 'One District-One River' scheme, promotion of irrigation techniques such as sprinkler and drip systems, incorporation of groundwater harvesting structures in building construction, and development of multipurpose ponds along riverbanks. Under the Khet Talab Yojana, the govt has helped construct 37,403 farm ponds since 2017–18, providing up to 50% subsidy on construction costs to farmers. Under the river revival programme, all district magistrates have been instructed to revive at least one river in their respective districts. In areas where groundwater levels have remained low for the past 10 years, at least one-fourth of farmers are being encouraged to adopt water-saving technologies. "These initiatives have shown positive results, with 29 districts reporting improvements in groundwater levels. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath introduced water conservation practices at Gorakhnath Temple around 10 years ago. He identified four spots prone to waterlogging and had rainwater harvesting pits installed there," said the spokesperson.
