India's crypto tax collections soar to Rs 437 cr, a 62% jump: Govt data
The Indian government has collected Rs 437.43 crores in income tax on cryptocurrencies and other virtual digital assets (VDAs) in the fiscal year 2023-2024, stated Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, in a written statement to the Lok Sabha on July 21.
In FY22-23, the income tax collected on cryptocurrency was approximately Rs 269.09 crores, up nearly 62.5 percent year on year as of FY24. However, the government does not have the most recent figures for FY24-25 because the tax filing deadline is still in effect.

This is the first time the government has revealed the specifics of cryptocurrency taxes collected since they were imposed in 2022. The government had imposed a 30% tax on gains from VDAs and a 1% TDS (tax deducted at source) on all transactions worth Rs 10,000 or more.
In answer to a query, Chaudhary stated, 'The Government is utilizing data analytics tools to trace and detect tax evasion from VDA related transactions. The analysis includes the use of Non-Filer Monitoring System (NMS), Project Insight and internal databases of the Income Tax Department, to correlate available information on VDA transactions with the transactions disclosed in the return of income by the taxpayer.'
Chaudhary also stated that the Central Board of Direct Taxes has launched NUDGE (Non-Intrusive Use of Data to Guide and Enable) campaign to discover such anomalies for further action.
He said, 'Under NUDGE campaign suitable communications, to review and update their income tax returns, were issued to all taxpayers who did not report VDA related transactions in their income tax returns, despite tax being deducted at source for such transactions by VASPs, where the quantum of such discrepancy was more than Rs 1 lakh.'

Moneycontrol exclusively reported in April 2025 that several crypto investors were starting to get income tax notices from the IT Department for failing to pay taxes on peer-to-peer (P2P) trading conducted through foreign exchange.
The government is also strengthening its staff through capacity-building measures that will provide officers with training programs, specialised seminars, Chintan Shivirs, and hands-on workshops to enable efficient compliance monitoring and investigation of VDA-related transactions.
Chaudhary said, 'At local level, field offices conduct training sessions and webinars on digital forensics, Blockchain analysis, legal frameworks, and handling of digital evidence. The officers and officials are also imparted short term training on digital forensics, in partnership with National Forensic Science University (NFSU), Goa, which empower them to identify and trace VDA related transactions from data captured during intrusive actions.'

Andhra liquor ‘scam': SIT finds Rs 11 crore cash at farmhouse near Hyderabad
A Special Investigation Team probing the alleged liquor scam in Andhra Pradesh claims to have seized Rs 11 crore in cash and boxes of alcohol bottles from a farmhouse in Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad. According to sources, the seizure was made during searches conducted following information from Varun Purshottam, a suspect in the case and a close aide of the prime accused, Kesireddy Rajashekar Reddy. The cash was allegedly stashed in 12 boxes of alcohol bottles. K Rajashekar Reddy is a former IT advisor to then chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. The seizures are connected to the alleged Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam under the former chief minister's government. Investigators claim that Andhra Pradesh's liquor policy was skewed in favour of a select group of companies in return for kickbacks. The CID filed a chargesheet in the case on July 20 after the arrest of three-time party MP P V Midhun Reddy. According to sources, the chargesheet mentions that the former chief minister had received kickbacks, although it does not name him as an accused. Sources claim that the new liquor policy was introduced to take absolute control of the supply and sale of liquor and that Rs 50-60 crore was generated in bribes every month between June 2019 and May 2024. Sources also allege that a major portion of the kickbacks were received in cash, gold bullion etc. On its part, the YSRCP has denied the allegations, calling it a 'political conspiracy designed to silence those who stand with the people'.

Microsoft restores services, Delhi HC closes Nayara Energy's plea
Nayara Energy informed the Delhi High Court on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) that Microsoft has restored cloud services to its cloud-based services, following which the court allowed the company to withdraw its petition. Nayara Energy — an Indo-Russian oil refining and marketing company — had approached the court after being suddenly locked out of its Microsoft account, disrupting critical business operations. At the outset of the hearing, counsel for Nayara Energy told the court that 'the matter is resolved because they (Microsoft) have restored all services.' The court then allowed Nayara to withdraw the petition, granting liberty to approach the court again should Microsoft take similar action in the future. Senior advocates Rajiv Nayyar and Dayan Krishnan, appearing for Nayara, argued that Microsoft had acted without notice and urged the court to record that any future termination of services should not be abrupt. 'At least they should give 3–4 days' notice before terminating. There can't be an abrupt shutting,' the lawyers said. Narrating the background, Mr. Krishnan said, 'Originally, there were servers. Then the Ukraine war started. They (Microsoft) came to us to move to cloud servers. We were apprehensive. They assured us: 'Don't worry, the Indian entity will not be affected by any of these (sanctions).' After that, this has happened.' Microsoft's counsel said the service has been restored but further clarified that no assurances could be given for the future. 'They (Nayara) are a sanctioned entity by the EU. We have restored today, but I can't make these statements for the future,' Microsoft's counsel submitted. Taking note of the developments, the court observed, 'Earlier, without notice, they had shut their services. You came to court. Now they have restored it. The grievance stands mitigated. In the future, we believe they would not do the same exercise, and as and when they intend to, they will perhaps give you notice. If they don't, you can come back to court.' In a recent press statement Nayara had said, 'While the sanctions originate exclusively from the EU, Microsoft—a U.S.-headquartered corporation—has chosen to withdraw services from Nayara Energy without any legal requirement to do so under U.S. or Indian law'. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, 'Microsoft is committed to supporting all its customers in India and worldwide, and has restored services for Nayara Energy. We are engaged in ongoing discussions with the European Union towards service continuity for the organization.' Nayara Energy said it is a vital contributor to India's energy security, accounting for approximately 8% of the country's total refining capacity, approx 7% of its retail petrol pump network.

It was launched in response to the attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in which terrorists killed 26 people on April 22. After Pakistan responded to Indian strikes with attacks on Indian civilian and military sites, India struck Pakistani military sites, including airbases and air defence units and, after four days of battering, Pakistan reached out to India with a request for a ceasefire on May 10. India granted Pakistan the request. India-US ties go beyond disagreements, say sources Sources in the Union government have said that the India-US relationship goes beyond ongoing differences, such as differences over the ceasefire in the India-Pakistan conflict and ongoing trade talks. Even as the August 1 deadline for a trade deal is just around the corner, India and the United States have not been able to reach any deal. It is believed that the Trump administration's refusal to respect Indian red lines about sensitive sectors of dairy and agriculture and genetically modified (GM) crops is the main barrier in the two sides reaching a deal. Sources said that the United States has so far stood with India in disputes with China, such as during the Doklam standoff of 2017, and such an important relationship cannot be compromised on one or two differences. Moreover, sources stressed that the prime minister has publicly declared that no leader asked India to stop the war. Similarly, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that Modi and Trump never had the discussion about stopping the war. Sources further said that the Congress party has been in power before and it should know how governments function, suggesting that the party should realise the kind of words that the government would use to assert disagreement with the United States.
