Peter Reid was Everton's great midfield general, the master of dictating tempo and the engine of the great mid-80s team in partnership with the vastly underrated (although not by anyone at Goodison Park) Paul Bracewell.

Reid was courage personified, not simply in the manner in which he battled back from career-threatening injuries, but in his fearless approach on the pitch. No battle was too intense for the hugely popular Huyton-born Reid, who revelled in an era when no quarter was given in midfield.
He would stand toe-to-toe with Graeme Souness at Liverpool, Norman Whiteside and Bryan Robson at Manchester United, who all had total respect for Reid, both as an opponent and a personality. There is no doubt at times he took on the role of Everton's enforcer.
A boyhood Red, Reid joyously tells the tale of how he was being verbally abused by a Liverpool fan at Anfield after fouling John Barnes - only to find the supporter in question was his Uncle Albert.
Reid was so much more than a hard man, as his success with Everton and England proves, but he also had that cutting edge required in what was hostile midfield territory in the 1980s.

Parish confirms Palace will appeal over Europa League demotion
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has confirmed his club will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being demoted from the Europa League. Palace qualified for the Europa League with a shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May. Advertisement But UEFA, European football's governing body, ruled Palace should drop down to the Conference League over a conflict of interest involving the club's former director John Textor, who also part-owns French side Lyon. Textor stepped away from Palace at the start of July, but the ownership issue relates to the end of last season when the south London team secured a maiden European appearance by winning the first major trophy in their history. UEFA's ruling would mean Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, take Palace's place in the Europa League, but Parish has signalled his intent to contest the decision. "We are still fighting," Parish told the The Rest is Football podcast. "There's an appeal process, so we go to CAS which is the court for arbitration and, you know, we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments. Advertisement "We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John didn't have decisive influence over the club. "We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt because it's a fact." UEFA rules say that no owner or co-owner can have a controlling interest in more than one club competing in the same European competition during the same season. Palace's position throughout has been that Textor did not have a sufficiently controlling role for the club to fall foul of the regulations. But the deadline for shareholders to divest their interest in a club, or in some other way to alter their ownership structure, in order to comply with the regulations was March 1. smg/ea

Petrovic completes Bournemouth move
New Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic says he wants to "play at the best level" after completing a £25m move to the club. The 25-year-old joins from Chelsea on a five-year-deal and will link up with the squad before their pre-season tour in the United States. Advertisement Petrovic has made 23 Premier League appearances but felt out of favour at the Blues and spent last season on loan at Strasbourg. The Serbia international had an impressive campaign with the Ligue 1 side, helping them to finish seventh and secure their place in the Uefa Conference League while also being named as the club's player of the season. "I'm really happy to be here. I came to Bournemouth because I want to grow and I want to play at the best level," he told club media. "Together with this club, with these facilities, I think we can achieve it. I want to help the team get the results, improve every day and be a better player." Advertisement Bournemouth's president of football operations Tiago Pinto added: "The opportunity to sign a player of his calibre in the market was one we had to take, particularly given how vital the position of a goalkeeper is. "We have been looking for the right talent to invest in within this area of the pitch and Djordje has very impressive qualities, as well as a lot of experience for someone who is still young." Petrovic replaces Kepa Arrizabalaga, who spent last season with the Cherries on loan from Chelsea, but switched to Arsenal at the start of July when his £5m release clause was triggered.
