Harris English's caddie is denied a UK visa over his past drug conviction
His caddie, Eric Larson, is stuck at home without being able to obtain a new Electronic Travel Authority visa for travel to the U.K., a regulation that now applies to Americans.
Grounds for refusal include an applicant who has been convicted of a criminal offense in the U.K. or overseas for which they served 12 months or more in prison.
Thirty years ago, Larson pleaded guilty to sending cocaine to friends in the Midwest. Though he wasn't a user or big-time dealer, he spent 10 years and three months in prison and was released from a halfway house in June 2006.
Mark Calcavecchia hired him back and got him on his feet. Since then, Larson worked for three players at the Ryder Cup — Anthony Kim in 2008, Jeff Overton in 2010 and most recently English, with whom he has worked the last eight years.
'I guess the United Kingdom doesn't look highly on his past,' English said Tuesday at The Renaissance Club before his pro-am round. 'And apparently it's a work in progress.'
English, who is No. 19 in the world and 10th in the U.S. standings for the Ryder Cup, said he didn't become aware of Larson's plight until right after he tied for fourth at the Travelers Championship three weeks ago.
English said he reached out to Warren Stephens, the ambassador to the U.K. who put him in touch with his chief of staff.
'They wrote a letter. The R&A wrote a letter. The PGA Tour wrote a letter. A charity event Eric works for in the States wrote a letter. It's not for a lack of effort,' English said. 'I think it could be sitting on someone's desk at the government somewhere.'
Joe Etter is filling in — for now — as his caddie. Etter, who started out working for English more than a decade ago, currently works for Davis Thompson, who is not playing the Scottish Open.
Thompson, however, received the final spot in the
field for the British Open next week at Royal Portrush
in Northern Ireland (part of the U.K.).
'Joe was my Plan B,' English said. 'Now we're going to have to get a new Plan B.'
English is holding out hope that someone will pave the way for Larson to get the ETA visa he needs for U.K. entry. Larson has worked the last four years at the British Open for English and previously for Overton and Kim.
'It's just a matter of the right people seeing it,' he said. 'I didn't understand how complicated the process was. Someone could see this guy had something in his past 30 years ago, he's been fine the last 20. How long does this stay with him?'
End of a streak
Hale Irwin is the only player to win a PGA Tour Champions event four consecutive years, a record that will remain intact because of scheduling.
The Dick's Sporting Goods Open was held in August last year. The previous two years it had been held in late June. It moved this year to July 11-13, which ultimately put an end to Padraig Harrington's bid to win the same tournament four years in a row.
The Irishman is sticking to his plan of three straight weeks in the U.K.
He'll be at the Scottish Open this week, eligible through the European tour from its 'Legends Category.' Harrington then will go over to Royal Portrush for the British Open as a past champion, and then Royal Porthcawl in Wales for the Senior British Open.
Irwin actually won the Turtle Back Championship in Hawaii five times in a row — 2000 through 2003, and then in 2005. The tournament was not held in 2004.
Glover's outlook
Former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, outspoken as ever, sounds to be a bit conflicted when it comes to any form of unification with the PGA Tour and the defectors to Saudi-funded LIV Golf.
There is Glover the player who doesn't want to see them return. And there is Glover the PGA Tour member who wants to see the tour grow and realizes a small number of big names on LIV can help that cause.
'We have to clarify 'we' at some point,' he said last week on his his SiriusXM PGA Tour radio show.
Glover said he doesn't blame anyone for deciding to cash in on the Saudi money and join LIV. But speaking for himself: 'I don't think they should be back there. I don't want them here.'
'As a PGA Tour player and somebody that dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour, and have poured my heart and soul into this tour and game for 21 seasons, I don't want somebody that chose another path, and a path of less resistance,' he said. 'I don't want them back here competing and taking part of my pie and these kids' pie that are trying to make it now.'
And then he shifted to the broader term of 'we,' meaning the tour and the fans everything else.
'The top four, five, six players over there, if they were playing on the PGA Tour, would benefit all of us because our TV deal in 2030 would be great, would be bigger,' he said. 'That's the big question right now in my opinion. Does it behoove all of us as tour members, who have equity now, to grow our sport by bringing some of those guys back? I'm having a hard time with it.'
Winners and stars
Winning on the PGA Tour moves a player into the top category when it comes to tee times, although it's clear there is a distinction between a PGA Tour winner and a needle mover.
Brian Campbell is the latest example.
He won the Mexico Open in late February for his first PGA Tour title. Over the next five months at PGA Tour events, Campbell was never in the same weekday group as anyone from the top 30 in the world ranking. Only three of them were among the top 50 — Davis Thompson (No. 48) and Byeong Hun An (No. 32) at the Cognizant Classic, and Sam Burns (No. 39) at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Campbell now is one of five players with at least two individual titles this year after
winning the John Deere Classic
.
Divots
The PGA Tour's newest tournament has a title sponsor. The Bank of Utah Championship will be at Black Desert Resort the last week in October in southern Utah. It made its debut last year as the Black Desert Championship. ... Michael Kim was added to the British Open field from the world ranking. This marks the first time in his career he plays all four majors in the same season. ... The LPGA is expanding the pathway to the Epson Tour for top college players with the LPGA Collegiate Advancement Pathway (LCAP). Starting next summer, it will award 10 graduating seniors with some form of Epson Tour status and Q-school exemptions.
Stat of the week
Americans hold seven of the top 10 spots in the world ranking.
Final word
'I remember talking about some sort of mountain and climbing up it. This is a steep, steep mountain now.' — Xander Schauffele on reaching No. 1 in the world.

Cubs Predicted To Part Ways With Young Pitcher Amid Injury Woes
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are loaded with talent, but their starting rotation has lacked a bit. Whether it be by injuries or lack of talent, the Cubs have struggled to consistently put five competitive pitchers in their rotation. With the trade deadline coming up, it should be expected that the Cubs will look to land an arm or two to replace some of the pitchers on the roster. FanSided's Zachary Rotman predicted the Cubs would part ways with pitcher Jordan Wicks, seemingly suggesting a demotion to Triple-A, in the coming weeks. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 6: Jordan Wicks #36 of the Chicago Cubs pitches in a game against the St Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field on July 6, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 6: Jordan Wicks #36 of the Chicago Cubs pitches in a game against the St Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field on July 6, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. Matt Dirksen/"Wicks did pitch well his last time out, and he might make a start or two this month with Jameson Taillon sidelined with an injury, but even with Taillon out, the odds of Wicks remaining in the majors past the trade deadline feel pretty slim," Rotman wrote. "The Cubs needed a starting pitcher even with Taillon healthy. "Taillon's injury will only add to their urgency to add a starter. They can do so and keep whomever they were going to remove from the rotation, presumably Colin Rea, as a starter until Taillon comes back healthy. This would ensure Wicks, a pitcher who has not established himself as MLB-caliber and one who has options, would get sent down to Triple-A." Sending Wicks to Triple-A seems like the best move for the Cubs, especially if they add a starting pitcher or two at the trade deadline. Chicago has been connected to starting pitchers like Sandy Alcántara, Seth Lugo, and Zac Gallen ahead of the deadline. If Chicago lands one of these guys, it's likely Wicks is sent down. If the Cubs happen to land two pitchers, Wicks' time in the Windy City is likely over for the season. But it's all going to hinge on what the Cubs add in the coming weeks. Keep getting texts about unpaid tolls? Here's what to know about the new E-ZPass scam
Keep getting texts about unpaid tolls? Here's what to know about the new E-ZPass scam According to Robokiller, Americans received 19.2 billion spam and scam texts in April 2025 alone - that comes out to about 63 spam texts for every person. There's only one group of people who don't think that's too much, and they're called scammers. Enter their latest racket, the E-ZPass scam, a toll scam that first rose to popularity in the spring this year. Because E-ZPass is so widely used, it's an effective gift, but stick around, and Spokeo will explain how to pass through without paying the scam toll. What Is E-ZPass? E-ZPass is an automatic electronic toll system that's widely used through the Southern, Eastern, and Northern United States. Rather than depositing money, swiping a debit card, or scanning a ticket, E-ZPass members - who are given a small transponder to stick on their windshield after signing up via a local agency or partner - can proceed through designated toll lanes without having to stop, and their E-ZPass account will be charged automatically. So that's E-ZPass, but what about the E-ZPass scam? It's a smishing scam. First, there's phishing, or scams that involve bad actors posing as other people, organizations, or companies "fishing" for your private information, which they can use to commit financial fraud. Phishing happens via emails, phone calls, direct messages, and more, but when it happens via text messages - which were popularized by the SMS platform (emphasis on the "S" here) - it's called smishing. And that's exactly how E-ZPass toll scams work. How E-ZPass Toll Scams Work Toll scams are nothing new, but the E-ZPass scam makes it more effective by sticking official-looking branding on it. In this scam, you'll get a text that claims to be from E-ZPass, usually claiming (often in panic-inducing language) that you have unpaid tolls that you must pay immediately, or that your account has expired and you must pay a renewal fee. In order to pay this impostor E-ZPass, you'll be prompted to click a link. At that link, you'll either be prompted to make a payment (to a scammer who is definitely not the real E-ZPass, who'll now conveniently have access to your payment info), or to enter private information, which will most likely be used to extract funds from you fraudulently. In most cases, the amount demanded is relatively small, a deliberate tactic that encourages victims to go ahead and pay and get it over with. Legit vs. Scam: How to Stay Safe Here's the easiest way to tell the difference between legit E-ZPass communication and a scam: E-ZPass doesn't text you for payment. Likewise, if you know you're not an E-ZPass customer in the first place, that's your sign to block, report, and delete. Otherwise, here's how to navigate the scammer freeway with a little extra peace of mind. Consider these tips your easy pass to a scam-free future. Run a reverse phone lookup on the phone number that sent the text message. This can tell you who the owner is and potentially provide their location - or use a people search tool to see if the name and contact info match anyone not click on strange links. Unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can trust the sender, it's better safe than sorry. That goes doubly for making payments or disclosing any sort of private an eye out for misspelling, poor grammar, or wonky links that resemble the official E-ZPass site, but aren't quite right (for instance, one example of the E-ZPass scam includes a link to an "ezdribe" website).Stick to your official E-ZPass account or app, both of which are usually state-specific, for addressing your balance and tackling any issues that might pop upBe wary of texts that use intimidating language - they're trying to scare you into taking immediate action on purpose. Some common keywords include "violation notice," "immediate payment required," "final warning," and the the number and delete any phony E-ZPass scam texts you in mind that sneaky scammers will sometimes pose as similar services, like state-specific toll collection services. No matter which toll company contacts you, log in to your official account and see if you actually owe a balance, rather than clicking on an unsolicited the E-ZPass Group's customer service directly if you have even the slightest suspicion that you're receiving unofficial engage with the sketchy texter. If you're motivated to help, you can report the scam to E-ZPass or file a complaint with the FCC. Unfortunately, the E-ZPass scam really blew up in 2025, prompting tons of local and online news stories, and even public warnings from the FBI, FCC, and dozens of local DMVs and DOTs. It's only natural for such a common scam to spark a lot of discussion and questions - here are a few of the most commonly searched queries, and their answers: Is the E-ZPass text a scam? If it's asking you to make a payment, it absolutely is. Does E-ZPass send emails to customers? According to E-ZPass services in states ranging from New York to Minnesota, and others, while the E-ZPass scam might hit your email inbox in much the same way it hits your texts, the real E-ZPass will never email you asking for payment or private information. What if I clicked the E-ZPass scam link? If you click the E-ZPass toll scam link but didn't make a payment or enter any personal information (oftentimes, your browser or your eyeballs will warn you that the site behind the link is super dubious), you're likely OK, but it won't hurt to use trusted anti-malware apps or software to scan your device. If you did proceed with payment or entered information, contact your bank or payment service ASAP to secure your account, reverse charges, and take the next steps for safety. How do I know if I have an E-ZPass violation? Log in to your account via your state's official E-ZPass website, or look for the toll violation page on that site. You'll be able to search for violations using your toll invoice number and license plate number. Paying tolls is enough of a pain - you don't need to pay scammers, too.
