Varanasi: Security tightened ahead of first Monday of Sawan; 2,000 police personnel deployed in Kashi
Speaking to ANI, Kashi Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Saravanan Thangamani said, 'Adequate police force has been deployed, seeing the possibility of a large number of devotees who arrive in Kashi (during sawan). Nearly 2000 police personnel, 6 companies of CRPF, 10 companies of PAC, one flood relief company, and 1 team of ATS have been deployed.'
'For security and traffic arrangements, regular anti-encroachment drives were being carried out in the Varanasi district and also in the Kashi Zone around the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Aerial surveillance via drones is also being carried out,' he added.
The ADCP also noted the rising water level of the Ganga River due to continuous rainfall. 'Before the first Monday of Sawan, the water level of the river has risen, so we have put a stop to the use of boats. The water level is above 65 metres and the flow is also strong... Social media cells have been activated so that no fake news or rumours are spread on social media. Orders have been given to take immediate action in case of any fake news spread on social media,' he said.
Earlier, due to incessant rainfall, several ghats and temples in Varanasi were submerged as the Ganga crossed the danger mark. Locals said that the water level is rising by one step daily at the ghats.
A resident, Sonu Sahani, told ANI, 'Water level is rising by one step each day. There were 84 ghats here, and after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the Namo Ghat, there are now 85 ghats here. We are in contact with all the ghats, while some roads are blocked. This happens annually, whenever it rains, it causes difficulty for the public as they get stuck.'
Another local, Lakhan Kumar Sahani, said, 'The water is rising one or two steps daily. There is difficulty in watching Ganga Aarti and operating boats.' (ANI)

But for the safety of the devotees and to avoid mishaps, it is not appropriate to pull the chariots at night," he July 7, large numbers of devotees gathered in Puri for the sacred 'Adhara Panna' ritual, where Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, was offered a special drink on the chariot. The ritual is one of the most significant events of the Rath Yatra celebrations.

₹1,543 crore transferred under Ladli Behna Yojana scheme: MP CM Yadav
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said ₹1,543.16 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 1.27 crore women under the Ladli Behna Yojana scheme. His remarks came while addressing a programme organised for Ladli Behna Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Social Security Pension Scheme on Saturday. "₹1,543.16 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 1.27 crore women under the Ladli Behna Yojana scheme... We are also providing help through the PM Ujjawala Yojana scheme and have provided Rs 46 crore and 36 lakhs of the subsidy..." he said. Meanwhile, CM Yadav took a holy dip in the Shipra river at Narsingh Ghat located in Ujjain district and offered prayers. "I try to take a dip in the Shipra River every year here. It is an old spot and Narsingh Temple is located here, devotees come here to take a holy dip throughout the year, especially during the holy month of Sawan and earn virtue," CM Yadav told reporters. Earlier, CM Yadav participated in the Kanwar Yatra in Ujjain and also showered flowers to welcome the Kanwar Yatris. Yadav also highlighted that the state government would ensure tight security arrangements for all Kanwar Yatris, along with appropriate facilities. He further added that instructions in this regard were already issued. The Chief Minister welcomed Kanwar Yatris with a shower of flowers. He also performed worship of Kanwar, lifted it, and along with Mahamandaleshwar of Agni Akhada, Uttam Swami, began Kanwar Yatra by walking on foot. The Chief Minister said that the tradition of celebrating all festivals with enthusiasm has been initiated by the state government. 'Sawan' holds a special place in Hindu mythology. Devotees undertake fasts and offer prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva during this period. The chanting of Shiva mantras, singing bhajans (devotional songs), and performing Rudrabhishek (ceremonial bathing of Shiva Lingam with holy substances) are common practices observed with fervour across households and temples during 'Sawan' month.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has strongly condemned Israel's aid distribution system in Gaza and called it "a cheap form of genocide", ANI reported, quoting Al Jazeera. In a post on X, Khamenei said that Israel has presented a grim choice to Palestinians in Gaza: "Either die in the rubble from hunger, or get shot while trying to get a food packet." He stressed, "This is a cheap form of genocide carried out with Western precision. A nation that once died under bombs worth millions of dollars is now dying from bullets in queues for a few dollars' worth of food." The United Nations has indicated that nearly 800 Palestinians have been killed in the last six weeks while trying to get aid from the Global Humanitarian Fund (GHF)'s aid distribution centers, ANI reported, quoting Al Jazeera. Earlier, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) chief Philippe Lazzarini had reacted to the situation, saying that Gaza has become a "graveyard of children and starving people." He further said that Israel is hatching a "cruel and cunning plan of murder" in Gaza, as reported by ANI, citing Al Jazeera. "Inaction and silence are complicity. Under our watch, #Gaza has become a graveyard of children and starving people," Lazzarini wrote on X. The UNRWA chief warned that Palestinians in Gaza face a cruel choice between starving or being shot, and urged immediate action to prevent further chaos. "Absolutely not. They have a choice between two deaths: dying of hunger or being shot. The most cruel and cunning plan to murder with total impunity. Our norms and values are being buried. Inaction will lead to more chaos. It's time to act," he added. Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, said that from May to July 7, the UN has documented 798 deaths near aid centres in Gaza, as reported by ANI, citing Al Jazeera. Israeli publication Haaretz reported that Israeli soldiers and US contractors linked to the GHF have admitted to firing on unarmed Palestinians who had gathered for food.
