The former King of Puri, Gajapati Dibyasingh Deb, has objected to ISKCON devotees celebrating Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra "throughout the year" outside India, calling it "inappropriate", thus against tradition and scriptures. He said talks are ongoing with ISKCON's head office in West Bengal to stop such practices."There is a specified date for that in our Sanatan Vedic culture, and it is celebrated only on Jyeshtha Purnima. We are seeing that the ISKCON is celebrating the birthday on different days abroad... This is inappropriate, against the scriptures and tradition. Shri Jagannath Mandir Puri is making efforts for this," he told ANI."Whether it is the Rath Yatra or Snan Yatra of Lord Jagannath, the dates are decided by the Lord himself in Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana and different holy scriptures. The Snan Yatra is the day of his appearance," he added.Earlier, Dibyasingh Deb said ISKCON had agreed to follow scripture-based traditions in India, and no violations were seen in recent years."After criticism, the Indian ISKCON agreed to celebrate the Snan Yatra and Rath Yatra as per the scriptures, and there has been no violation for two to three years. But outside India, ISKCON is celebrating Snan Yatra and Rath Yatra throughout the year. This is inappropriate, against the scriptures and tradition. Shri Jagannath Mandir Puri is making efforts for this," he said.He added that discussions are underway with ISKCON's Mayapur head office to stop these practices abroad. "Discussions are ongoing with the ISKCON head office in Mayapur, West Bengal, as to how to stop this. We hope that they get information and scriptural evidence from the Jagannath Puri temple and they stop this violation outside India, because this hurts the religious and spiritual sentiments of all the devotees of Lord Jagannath in the world," the erstwhile king of Puri added.Asked about the long-standing restriction on non-Hindus entering the Jagannath Puri temple, he said any change must come from the Shankaracharya."Currently, there is no discussion regarding it. One needs to go to the Shankaracharya regarding this. This is a religious matter, and only a Dharmaguru can make any decision on it; only then can there be any changes. I cannot say anything about it. The established tradition is that only Hindus have the right to enter," he said. The former Puri King also spoke about the increasing footfall at the annual festival and called on the government to provide better facilities."The number of devotees is increasing each year. This year, the no. of devotees during the Rath Yatra was nearly 15 lakhs. The government should make the required arrangements for accommodation, security and facilities. The no. of devotees this year was much more than expected. Lakhs of people attended the rituals during the nine days of the Rath Yatra. I am sure the state government will provide good facilities," he said. His comments come after a stampede during the Rath Yatra on June 29, which left three people dead and several injured. On the decision to pull the chariots at night, he said there is no official restriction, but safety must be considered."As per the government directions, if the chariots reach near the temple, then they can be pulled during the night. According to the Skanda Puran, even in the night, the chariots should be pulled using thousands of torches, if needed and make the Rath reach the temple anyhow. There is no restriction on pulling the chariots at night. But for the safety of the devotees and to avoid mishaps, it is not appropriate to pull the chariots at night," he said.On July 7, large numbers of devotees gathered in Puri for the sacred 'Adhara Panna' ritual, where Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, was offered a special drink on the chariot. The ritual is one of the most significant events of the Rath Yatra celebrations.

EU extends pause on tariff retaliation day after Trump threatens fresh trade measures

The European Union will hold off on taking retaliatory steps against new US tariffs until early August, as it continues its efforts to resolve trade tensions with the US through dialogue, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters on Sunday. Announcing the extension, von der Leyen told reporters, 'We have always been clear that we prefer a negotiated solution.' If they cannot reach a deal, she said, 'We will continue to prepare further countermeasures so we are fully prepared,' as per news agency Reuters. US President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to impose a 30 per cent tariff on all goods imported from the European Union and Mexico starting August 1. This would be separate from existing duties on specific sectors, despite months of talks between the two sides. The EU had earlier agreed to suspend an initial package of retaliatory tariffs worth €21 billion ($24.6 billion) on US goods. These measures, in response to US tariffs on steel and aluminium, were put on hold in April for 90 days to allow time for talks. That suspension is due to end on Monday. A second, larger package of potential countermeasures, which has been in preparation since May, would target US goods worth €72 billion, however, the full list has not yet been made public and would still need approval from EU member states. When asked whether the EU's Anti-Coercion Instrument might be used, von der Leyen said, 'The instrument is created for extraordinary situations. We are not there yet,' Reuters reported. The Anti-Coercion Instrument allows the EU to respond when non-EU countries try to pressure member states into changing their policies. Possible actions under the instrument could include trade restrictions, investment limits, and export controls, Reuters highlighted.

Case Filed After Broken Glass Pieces Found On Kanwar Route In Delhi, Probe Underway

Meanwhile, CCTV footage was being examined to ascertain whether the glass came from a damaged vehicle or was deliberately thrown by miscreants. The police, however, in a statement said that the glasses were accidently broken when they were being carried to the destination via an e-rickshaw, as reported by news agency ANI. It said that the e-rickshaw, which was carrying a total of 19 glasses from Shalimar Garden to Seelampur has been identified and vehicle's driver has been detained for further questioning. 'The e-rickshaw, which was carrying a total of 19 glasses from Shalimar Garden to Seelampur, has been identified. The glasses were broken during the journey to the destination. The driver has been identified as Kusum Pal. He has been detained for further questioning," it said in a statement. The incident came to light after Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra raised the matter on social media on Saturday, expressing concern over the safety of the pilgrims and assuring that action would be taken. He had alleged that it was an act by some anti-social elements and that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had taken note. 'In Delhi's Shahdara, some mischievous elements scattered glass shards along the Kanwar Yatra route for nearly a kilometre. PWD and municipal workers are cleaning the route. Local MLA Sanjay Goyal ji is present there. CM@gupta_rekha ji has personally taken cognisance of the incident. An FIR will be filed by PWD against the mischievous elements," Mishra said in a post on X. Earlier today, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had posted on X, 'It came to notice yesternight that a large amount of shards of broken glass had been strewn on a stretch of about 1 km road in Dilshad Garden, on the route of Kanwar Yatris, who walk barefoot." He said the police came to the spot and the public works department (PWD) cleaned the road within two hours. The police have also filed a first information report (FIR). '… Crime branch is investigating the matter," the Lt Governor said. BJP leader and Shahadara MLA Sanjay Goyal, who reached the spot to oversee the cleaning work on Sunday, said it was not the first time pieces of glass have been found on the same route. Following the incident, police personnel were deployed in the area and they patrolled roads near the flyover and surrounding Kanwar camps to ensure safety. Raman, a Kanwar yatri resting in one of the camps, told news agency PTI that the journey had been peaceful so far. "All arrangements are good and we have no issues. We saw a few glass pieces on the flyover, but many workers were cleaning the roads even at night," he said.

Kurnool gears up for Ganesh celebrations with clay idols only mandate

Sri Ganesh Mahotsavams (Ganesh Chaturthi) will be celebrated from August 27 to September 4 for nine days in Kurnool town and for five days in other places including Adoni, Yemmiganur, Pattikonda, and Gudur. The Kurnool district Ganesh Utsav Samithi has urged the pandal organisers to conduct the festivities in a traditional manner and install only clay idols of Lord Ganesh. Leaders of the Utsava Samithi from across the district and Kurnool town held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the modalities for conducting the festivities. Addressing the media at the Samithi office at Vinayaka Ghat in Kurnool, Samithi district president Venugopal called upon pandal organisers to install only clay idols of Lord Ganesha. 'Pandal organisers should desist from installing Ganesh idols depicting film actors and non-traditional forms. The idols should be in traditional forms,' Mr Venugopal said. Mr Venugopal said the festivities should reflect Hindu unity, traditions and culture and should be organised in a peaceful manner. He said the the celebrations should honour the memory of Hindus who lost their lives in the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and commend the victory of the Indian Armed Forces in Operation Sindoor against terror operatives and their hideouts in Pakistan.
