Rothdene pump station upgrades to be completed soon
The Midvaal Local Municipality(MLM) is making significant progress on the upgrade of the Rothdene Pump Station, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving sewage management and eliminating unpleasant odours affecting nearby communities.
Recently, Municipal officials conducted an oversight visit to the site to monitor construction progress and ensure quality standards are being met.
According to MLM, the pump station plays a critical role in processing sewage from several areas, including Sicelo, Henley on Klip, Daleside, and parts of the Midvaal industrial zones. For years, residents living near the station have expressed concern over persistent foul odours emanating from the facility.
In response, the municipality has appointed a contractor to install a state-of-the-art Odour Control System designed to neutralize offensive smells and significantly improve air quality for surrounding neighbourhoods.
'The upgrade project remains on schedule, with full completion anticipated by the end of June. Several key components of the upgrades, such as servicing the 5-ton Demag cranes, repairing and installing Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), and refurbishing the unit breaker, were completed earlier this year.'

Lilly cleanups at the completed Emmarentia Upper Dam Rehabilitation project

After months of delays and anticipation, the rehabilitation of the Emmarentia Upper Dam has finally been completed, marking a major step forward in flood protection and public accessibility. The long-awaited upgrade concluded late last year, restoring one of the city's cherished green spaces for residents and their four-legged companions. Parkgoers can now return to enjoy the dam's natural beauty, a welcome development after more than eight months of limited access. Regular visitors, especially dog walkers, have been quick to reclaim the tranquil walking paths and open spaces along the water. While the primary rehabilitation work has concluded, some efforts are still ongoing, particularly in managing the water lilies that have taken over parts of the dam. Also read: Emmarentia Upper Dam rehabilitation project finally complete Justice Khoza, site supervisor for Rooriv Construction, explained that although the dam itself is complete, the team is still in the process of removing the lilies from the water. 'We are still removing the water lilies,' Khoza said. 'They thrive in water, and because of that, the lower part of the dam is getting less water.' According to Khoza, teams have already spent five days clearing the lilies, but dense clusters on the opposite end of the dam remain. The removal work is vital to maintaining the dam's water balance and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Riviera on Vaal parkrun set to reopen after sewage woes

VEREENIGING – After nearly two months of closure due to raw sewage flooding parts of its route, the Riviera on Vaal parkrun is finally making a comeback. Earlier this week, organisers announced on Facebook: 'Dear parkrunners, we are SUPER excited to announce that the Riviera on Vaal parkrun will be open on Saturday, 28 June!! See you at 08:00, for a long overdue parkrun reunion!!' The weekly Saturday event, a favourite among local runners and walkers, was first suspended in May when sewage spills made sections of the trail unsafe. Despite some improvement noted in June, organisers had opted to keep the event on hold to ensure participants' safety, with raw sewage still visible along parts of the footpath as recently as last week. In a statement posted earlier this month, the team said: 'Even though the situation of the sewage water on our route is looking much better, it is still not safe to open the parkrun. We really hope to return with better news next week.' Their latest update signals that conditions have finally improved enough for a safe return. Parkrunners are urged to check the event's Facebook page for any last-minute updates and to arrive early for the 08:00 start. The Riviera on Vaal parkrun is held weekly at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel grounds and typically attracts a lively crowd eager for fitness, fresh air and community spirit.
