Khaled: Defence procurements to be finalised after 13th Malaysia Plan

New Straits Times20 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: New defence asset procurement will only be confirmed after the government presents the 13th Malaysia Plan, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He said the ministry is waiting for the government to approve the procurement proposals submitted.
"All new procurements will be finalised only after the government tables the 13th Malaysia Plan.
"First, we have to wait for the government's decision by July 31 on proposals submitted for approval (on the procurement of assets).
"These assets are crucial in our effort to build a future force aligned with the modernisation of the armed forces," he said in response to questions about the possibility of Malaysia acquiring littoral mission ship batch 3 and multi role support ship assets from Italy following the prime minister's recent visit to the country.
He said discussions during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit to Italy and France focused on offers from those countries should Malaysia proceed with acquisitions involving their defence products.
"They are prepared to extend credit facilities, meaning they are willing to provide financial arrangements so that budget constraints will not hinder us from carrying out military modernisation or asset procurement."
Khaled added that any acquisition agreements would be based on government-to-government arrangements to ensure better pricing.
"What matters to us is that the prices offered are based on government-to-government deals, which means the prices are more favourable. If it were through open tender, it is unlikely any country could offer the same terms," he said.
Earlier, it was reported that Anwar, in his visit to Italy, held an engagement session with major Italian firms, including Fincantieri, Leonardo and ENI, toboost cooperation in the defence and energy sectors.

5 initiatives for armed forces personnel

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry, through Yayasan Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (Yayasan LTAT), has introduced five educational initiatives for armed forces personnel, their children and family members. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said these initiatives were introduced to ensure their wellbeing by focusing on education and skills development. "The first initiative is the e-Perkasa Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 Programme, a collaboration between Yayasan LTAT and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris involving 652 students who are children of armed forces personnel attending schools outside military camps. "Through this programme, each student has been provided with a laptop for free, sponsored by BHIC AeroServices Sdn Bhd, Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd and the Malaysian Armed Forces Trading Corporation," he said at the launch of Yayasan LTAT's 2025 Educational Initiatives here yesterday. Khaled said the second initiative was the SPM Elite Touch Programme, where 658 students from six in-camp schools would benefit from tuition classes, workshops and career guidance programmes. "The third initiative is the Armed Forces Family Skills Programme, which extends education and skills development for armed forces personnel, including members of the Armed Forces Family Welfare Association and their children. "Those pursuing studies in Mara institutions in the field of technical and vocational education and training or equivalent will receive tuition sponsorship of up to RM3,000 per person." The fourth initiative, Khaled said, was the Madani Education Savings Programme, a collaboration between Yayasan LTAT and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation. The fifth initiative is the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programme, where Yayasan LTAT has formed a strategic partnership with Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) and Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Paragon Globe eyes strong growth from industrial, residential segments

PETALING JAYA: Johor-based property developer Paragon Globe Bhd is positioning itself for sustained growth in the industrial and residential sectors, supported by strategic projects and the state's buoyant economic prospects, following a record-breaking financial performance in its recently concluded financial year. For the financial year ended March 31, 2025, Paragon Globe achieved a net profit of RM105.6 million, reversing the previous year's net loss of RM1.2 million. Revenue surged to RM306.3 million from RM51 million the year before, primarily driven by strategic land disposals and robust industrial property sales. Paragon Globe executive chairman Datuk Seri Edwin Tan Pei Seng said the strong performance was largely attributable to a RM337.3 million disposal of 67.6 acres of industrial land at Desa Cemerlang to Bridge Data Centres. 'Apart from strategic land sales, we experienced high demand for industrial developments at Pekan Nenas, significantly contributing to our earnings,' he added. 'Looking ahead, our growth will be underpinned by residential launches such as Calia Residences and The Iconic at Stulang Laut, along with continued industrial projects.' Paragon Globe recently opened its flagship RM10 million PGB Experience Gallery in Johor Bahru, aimed at enhancing customer engagement and centralising sales activities across its diverse project portfolio. Tan highlighted the strategic advantage of Paragon Globe's industrial projects – Desa 27 and Desa 100 – which are ideally located to leverage the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). These projects have attracted prominent multinational tenants, including Hunter Amenities International and Meiban Technologies. Despite global economic uncertainties, Tan expressed optimism about Johor's property sector, buoyed by initiatives such as the JS-SEZ and the Johor-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link. 'PGB remains committed to resilience, diversification, and sustainability, positioning ourselves to adapt swiftly and effectively to market changes,' Tan said. On shareholder returns, he said the company was actively reviewing its capital allocation strategy, including the possible introduction of a structured dividend policy, balancing prudent reinvestments with shareholder rewards. 'Despite global economic uncertainties, we remain optimistic about Johor's property market outlook, driven by sustained regional growth initiatives. PGB remains committed to resilience, diversification, and sustainability, positioning ourselves to adapt swiftly and effectively to market changes,' concluded Tan.

He acknowledged delays and public unease over certain appointments but assured that all processes have been carried out fairly and transparently. "This morning, I had a lengthy discussion with the Conference of Rulers. "I think let them decide and tomorrow, hopefully, there will be an announcement that would clearly dispel the so-called negative perceptions,' he said in his speech at Malaysia's International Conference on Integrity and Governance here today. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, stressed that the Madani government fully upholds judicial independence and has not interfered in any court proceedings or decisions during his tenure. "…so I rest my case, and I hope when the announcement is made, things will prove that this government is committed to reform, including the principle of judicial independence,' he added. Anwar stressed that he has never submitted any 'compromise' candidates for top judicial positions to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, or to the Conference of Rulers. "Azalina (Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said) knows that, the Chief Secretary (Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar) also knows that there has never been a case where the names submitted were questioned or appeared to be compromised. Such names were never presented to the King or the Rulers "May I assure you now that in my two and a half years in office, I have not discussed with any judge (even) one case, not with the Chief Judge, not with any (of the) judges. I adhere to the principles of judicial independence,' he added. Anwar acknowledged ongoing concerns about the issue and the perception that several key judicial appointments may be compromised. "I can assure you that is not the case. I am sure my colleagues in the legal profession respect the fact that we must work based on the law and facts, not perceptions,' he said. The position of Chief Justice became vacant following the mandatory retirement of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who both turned 66 on July 2 and 3, respectively.
