June 22 (UPI) -- Tesla will begin its launch of robotic taxis in Austin, Texas, on Sunday afternoon, Elon Musk announced.
"The @Tesla_AI robotaxi launch begins in Austin this afternoon with customers paying a $4.20 flat fee!" Musk said in a post on social media.
Earlier this month, Musk had revealed Sunday as the tentative start date while cautioning that the company was "being super paranoid about safety" and that the date might shift.
The electric carmaker has provided few details about the plans for the robotaxi since it was announced last year, but some information on the service can be found on the company's website.
To get started using the robotaxis, users must download the Robotaxi app and use their Tesla account to log in, where it then functions like most ridesharing apps.
"Our fleet will initially consist of model year 2025 Model Y vehicles," the service's FAQ section reads. "Riders are prohibited from sitting in the front-left seat, which is typically a driver's customary seating position."
Tesla notes that children are not allowed to ride in the vehicles and only service animals are permitted to accompany disabled riders.
"Riders may not always be delivered to their intended destinations or may experience inconveniences, interruptions, or discomfort related to the Robotaxi," the company wrote in a disclaimer in its terms of service. "Tesla may modify or cancel rides in its discretion, including for example due to weather conditions."
The terms of service include a clause that Tesla will not be liable for "any indirect, consequential, incidental, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, including lost profits or revenues, lost data, lost time, the costs of procuring substitute transportation services, or other intangible losses" from the use of the robotaxis.
As reported by The Guardian, Musk previously told reporters that there may be less than a dozen cars available to the public in Austin during the Sunday launch. It was not immediately clear if human drivers would be in the cars during the rollout, which has become a standard practice during launches by rival companies.
Meanwhile, Tesla's robotaxis have already received some pushback from Democratic lawmakers in Texas, who penned a letter last week asking the company to delay the launch until at least September.
"Next week, Tesla plans to launch robotaxis in Austin -- before Texas' new AV safety law takes effect. We're urging a delay until those safety standards are in place," Texas Sen. Sarah Eckhardt said in a post to social media.
"Public trust comes from safety and transparency. We look forward to working with Tesla to achieve both."

Mayor Adams Loses Another Round in Bid to Receive Public Matching Funds

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City was again denied public matching funds for his re-election campaign after a panel said on Tuesday that he had once again failed to provide requested information regarding his campaign's interactions with Turkish business interests, among other things. The New York City Campaign Finance Board initially denied Mr. Adams's request for public funds following his indictment on corruption-related charges last year, blocking him from the city's generous program that gives qualifying candidates an eight-for-one match of small-dollar donations. In May, Mr. Adams sued the board in an effort to overturn the ruling, arguing that the decision to withhold $3.4 million was based on an indictment that had been dropped. The lawsuit was dismissed last week, with a federal judge in Brooklyn, Nicholas G. Garaufis, noting that Mr. Adams had been late to provide information regarding conflicts of interest and that more information was still outstanding. In its denial on Tuesday, the Campaign Finance Board said that the mayor's team still had not provided the necessary documents, some of which were requested in November. The board's chairman, Frederick P. Schaffer, said that Mr. Adams's campaign had requested an extension until Aug. 1. The board's denial comes as its investigation into the Adams campaign's financing practices appears to be expanding, with its lawyers indicating in court filings that the board had requested more information to explain potential improper behavior. Some of the requested correspondence is connected to an Uzbek businessman, according to court documents. The board's decision is yet another blow to the mayor's effort to defeat the Democratic nominee, Zohran Mamdani, who won a decisive victory in last month's primary, handily outpacing his closest rival, former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, by 12 points. Mr. Mamdani was awarded nearly $1.1 million in public matching funds.

Is the Stock Market About to Explode Higher Again? The V-Shaped Rally That Could Spark a Bull Run

The stock market's 20%+ rebound in 55 days matches two of the biggest bull markets in history. Here's what traders need to know — and how to track it using Barchart tools. In April 2009 and again in April 2020, the S&P 500 Index ($SPX) surged more than 20% in just 55 trading days, sparking two of the most powerful bull markets over the last 50 years. It's 'What happens next?' In both 2009 and 2020, a sharp bounce off bear market lows created what analysts call a 'V-shaped' recovery. Not only did the market rally hard — it continued to grind higher for years, setting new all-time highs and delivering outsized gains for early buyers. Now in 2025, the market has once again crossed that 20% recovery threshold, matching the structure and timing of those previous turning points. Could this be the start of the next great bull market? While history offers clues, it doesn't guarantee results. So how do you navigate what could be a massive opportunity — or a bull trap in disguise? Use indicators that track real momentum and sentiment, like: Golden Cross Signals – When the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day. A classic bullish trend confirmation. Relative Strength Index (RSI) – To confirm overbought/oversold levels and momentum strength. Put/Call Open Interest Ratios – To gauge bullish vs. bearish sentiment in the options market. Here's how to stay one step ahead using Barchart's suite of pro-grade tools: Grid Chart Tool → Compare SPY performance from 2009, 2020, and 2025 to spot the pattern for yourself. Golden Cross Signals (Moving Average Crossover) → Use Barchart's MA Crossover indicator to track 50/200-day crossovers. Put/Call Ratio Page → View sentiment shifts and options activity for volume and open interest. RSI Screeners → Quickly scan for stocks entering overbought or oversold territory. While momentum may be building, smart traders wait for confirmation. Keep your eyes on sentiment data, moving average slopes, and options flow to gauge whether bulls are in control — or if a reversal is brewing. The Put/Call Open Interest Ratio is still relatively low compared to historic levels — which could mean the market has more room to run before the bears start piling in. Cathie Wood Is Buying Tesla Stock Here. Should You?

Tesla (TSLA) is seeing a chronic sales decline this year amidst rising competition from the likes of BYD (BYDDY), but this has not deterred influential investor Cathie Wood. The founder and chief executive of Ark Invest loaded up on nearly 60,000 TSLA shares late last week across two of her flagship funds: the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) and the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW). Get exclusive insights with the FREE Barchart Brief newsletter. Subscribe now for quick, incisive midday market analysis you won't find anywhere else. At the time of writing, Tesla stock is down more than 13% down versus its three-month high. Cathie Wood investing more than $18 million in TSLA shares last week is notably positive for investors as it signals strong conviction in the company's long-term potential. Wood is bullish on the EV stock primarily because she sees transformative potential in its robotaxi and humanoid robot initiatives. According to her, autonomous services will drive up to 90% of the automaker's future value, with software-like margins exceeding 80%. Wood even has a long-term price target of $2,600 on Tesla stock, indicating relentless confidence in its innovation pipeline, including affordable EVs and artificial intelligence enabled mobility. Despite the company's launch of robotaxi services and progress on humanoid robots, UBS analyst Joseph Spak does not share Wood's optimism on Tesla stock. On Monday, Spak reiterated his 'Sell' rating on the EV stock, citing valuation concerns. TSLA has a forward price-earnings multiple of more than 230x currently – much higher than several top AI stocks, including Nvidia (NVDA), which trades at 41x forward earnings. Additionally, the investment firm cited the 'removal of 100% margin credit revenue, and a CEO who's arguably distracted from the business,' for its bearish view on Tesla stock. UBS currently has a $215 price target on Tesla that translates to potential downside of more than 30% from current levels. Other Wall Street analysts also remain dovish on TSLA shares – especially since the EV company reported a 14% year-over-year decline in quarterly deliveries in the first week of July. The consensus rating on Tesla stock currently sits at 'Hold' only with the mean target of $297 implying 5% downside from here.
