Bodycam footage from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary revealed a chase unfolding in Ocean Way, Southampton.
Officers run after suspected shoplifter, Mohamed Diallo, who is attempting to flee the scene by bike.
He falls off a few times before being knocked over by the police.
Policemen pin him to the floor, with the help of Jeff, who sits on his legs.
The former Bill legend, casually wearing sunglasses and shorts, is thanked and replies: "No, sure, man. Well, I was in The Bill for 24 years, in the TV show. Yeah, I played Reg."
The star later posed with the force for a group photo.
They posted: "Long since retired from Sun Hill station - but he's still got it!"
Mohamed Diallo, 29, admitted stealing alcohol and food in five separate incidents.
He will be sentenced by Southampton magistrates in August.
Jeff was one of the longest lasting actors on The Bill, appearing from 1984 to 2008.
He appeared alongside Graham Cole's PC Tony Stamp and Mark Wingett's character DC Jim Carver.
Following his departure from the show, Jeff starred in 2009's Dead Man Running, 2010's Tomorrow and Under Jakob's Ladder in 2011 - where he managed to bag himself Best Actor at the Manhattan Film Festival.
Speaking about leaving the drama, he previously said: "I didn't see a counsellor, it was evident I was OK and I never worried how it would affect my career.
'I thought, 'I have a choice, you can either stagnate or blossom.'

The Bill launched on ITV in 1983 but was axed in 2010, after running for an incredible 26 series.
The show, set in the fictional Sun Hill in London, became the longest-running police procedural drama in Britain.
It helped launch the careers of Keira Knightley, David Tennant, James Mcavoy, Sean Bean and David Walliams.
This comes after more shocking arrests have been caught on camera up and down the country.
In one incident, cops were punched and kicked by a baying mob before one officer body slammed a yob against car.
Last month dramatic footage revealed the moment cops arrested a 92-year-old man for a murder carried out nearly 60 years before.
Video caught on police bodycam saw Ryland Headley being detained at his home for the murder of Louisa Dunne in what was Britain's oldest cold case review.
Elsewhere, a dashcam recording captured the moment a biker yob dragged a hero cop down the road as he tried to arrest him for anti-social riding.
Sergeant Tom Brookes asked Scott Ryall, 21, to pull over after he spotted him doing dangerous wheelies in Bargoed, Wales, on April 8.
Plus, cops released a video showing a sacked police officer tackling a teenage suspect and screaming in his face.
The shocking footage was made public after a campaign was launched to reverse the decision to dismiss PC Lorne Castle for the 'aggressive' and 'intimidating' arrest.

ITV accused of ‘cutting key Love Island scenes' as viewers ask ‘what are they hiding?'

Eagle-eyed viewers have accused show producers of editing the long running ITV2 dating show to allegedly hide the actions of some of the contestants. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 3 Love Island fans were suspicious of the show's editing Credit: Eroteme 3 They say the women seemed to be over the top when slamming Harry Credit: Eroteme 3 It comes after the Grafties showed Harry pursuing Shakira while still with Helena Credit: Eroteme The accusations came after the notorious Grafties Awards episode aired, as fans clocked how the women in the villa started to realise footballer Harry had been the one pursuing Shakira all along. Harry had long been coupled up with Helena, but they decided to split up on Sunday's episode, and he ended up recoupling up with Shakira, after it was revealed during the Grafties that he still had feelings for her. But now Love Island fans have grown suspicious of what they are being shown, especially when it comes to what the Islander women were saying about Shakira. Some speculated that the women seemed to overcompensate by blaming Harry after the Grafties, because they had bad-mouthed Shakira before the truth was revealed. One fan wrote on Reddit: "The Grafties showed multiple times that it was Harry that was pursuing Shakira while she kept shutting it down (or trying to)... I immediately had a feeling they've [the other women] been putting all the blame on Shakira even more than what we saw. "But my guess is they were even more trash talking Shakira on how she is trying to steal Harry, and it's 'all her doing'.. otherwise there was no reason to say this so strongly so many times. "What do you guys think? I like to try and 'outsmart' the producers by guessing what they edit out." One person replied: "I imagine they all kept thinking Shakira was the one initiating these conversations - when it was all Harry. But agree OP there could have been even more side chats on this for this to fully make sense." Another added: "You're so right! Why else say that if they didn't all blame her or had some misgivings about Shakira. "What people don't understand, sometimes very small things that aren't active bullying can make people feel bad and it's not something you can sum up in a clip like a mean comment... Love Island star Harry kisses Shakira's neck and goes in for a snog in very intimate snuggling moment "These are all really small things you can't really put into a short clip but you actively feel it when it happens to you." After the Grafties, Harry admitted that he still had feelings for Shakira, despite being exclusive with Helena. Then Shakira ended her couple partnership with Conor, saying she had suppressed her feelings towards Harry. Harry and Helena ended up going their separate ways in emotional scenes. Helena was then picked by Blu to recouple with after the bombshell was brought back in to the villa in a surprise move. Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Teenager, 18, has ‘three-quarters of scalp ripped off' on funfair ride in Hampshire

An 18-year-old woman has been left with potentially life-changing injuries after her hair reportedly became caught in a funfair ride in Hampshire at the weekend. Emergency services were called to Netley Marsh Steam and Craft show shortly before 11pm on Saturday after the teenager's hair was said to have been trapped in the rollers of a swinging floor. Emma Perry, a nurse from Southampton General Hospital, told the Southern Daily Echo: 'Her friend came off the ride and said she was bleeding, so I offered my services as a first aider. 'When I got up there, I saw that three-quarters of the girl's scalp had been ripped off in what we call a degloving incident.' One woman told the BBC that she had helped provide first aid to the teenager, and that there had been 'shock and panic' at the scene. "One of the girl's friends came down and said how serious it was and some of us offered assistance,' she said. "It's very shocking it could happen on a fairground ride that young children go on. This must never happen again.' In a post on Facebook, the show's organisers said: 'The unfortunate incident that happened at the show last evening is being investigated by the relevant authorities. 'Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show Ltd are cooperating with all parties involved. No further comment will be made until such time as appropriate and more information is available. 'Any comments made at present on social media are NOT the views of the show organisers and we will continue to support all parties involved. A Hampshire Police spokesperson said: 'We were called at 10.53pm on 26 July with reports that an 18-year-old woman had sustained potentially life-changing injuries to her head while on a ride at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show. 'She was taken to hospital for treatment. 'Police attended and have liaised with the Health and Safety Executive.'
