Op Pedo: University student caught with 5,000 files of child pornography material
Bukit Aman Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division's (D11) principal assistant director Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan
KUALA LUMPUR – The illegal activities of a university student came to light after he was arrested during a recent operation codenamed Op Pedo, which led to the discovery of 5,000 files containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and adult content on his devices.
Even more disturbing, the 20-year-old suspect was found to have produced some of the pornographic material himself, involving two local children as victims.
The man was arrested on April 29 in Pasir Gudang, Johor by a team from the Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children (Micac) unit, the Sexual Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department and the Johor Contingent Police, in collaboration with Google.
Bukit Aman Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division's (D11) principal assistant director Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan said checks on the suspect's devices uncovered 5,000 files containing CSAM along with adult content, believed to have been downloaded from the internet.
Some of the materials were also believed to have been produced by the suspect himself, involving two local children.
She said further investigations revealed that the suspect had taken advantage of two girls, aged four and nine, who were also his cousins.
"The suspect is believed to have recorded the acts using a mobile phone at several different locations — in Selangor, Pahang and Kelantan.
"Police have seized a mobile phone and a laptop for further action under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 292 of the Penal Code," she told Sinar.
Kamsiah said three separate investigation papers had been opened in the relevant states.
"For the offence of possessing CSAM and adult content, the suspect was charged in Johor on May 22, pleaded guilty and paid a fine of RM5,000.
"For the offence involving recordings with the children at the suspect's family home in Sungai Buloh between 2023 and 2025, the suspect was charged today (Thursday) in Klang," she added.
She said investigations into another incident involving the suspect bathing one of the victims in a bathroom at an oil palm plantation in Maran, Pahang were still under review by the Deputy Public Prosecutor.
"As for the incidents in Kelantan, which occurred last year and this year at the suspect's grandmother's house, investigations are also still being reviewed by the Attorney General's Chambers," she said.

Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old man was fined RM4,000 or seven months' jail by the Magistrate's Court, Thursday, for damaging public property. Alif Hussien, 29, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing mischief by cutting a 32ft electric cable belonging to the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, on Feb 26, this year, at 3am, along the pedestrian walkway near Jalan Coastal, close to Api-Api Centre, here. He committed the offence along with an accomplice. Advertisement Alif was charged under Section 431A of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Act, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or both, on conviction. The facts of the case presented by the prosecution stated that acting on a tip-off, police officers from the Kota Kinabalu Criminal Investigation Department and Task Force went to Jalan Coastal at around 3am on Feb 26. Upon arrival, they spotted two men behaving suspiciously. Both men attempted to flee but were caught. A search at the scene led to the discovery of several items believed to be linked to the theft, including a backpack, a 32ft-long cut electric cable, two types of pliers and a pair of shoes. Further investigation confirmed the cable belonged to City Hall. A representative from City Mall identified the seized cable and it was confirmed that a police report had been lodged earlier regarding the theft. Unrepresented, Alif pleaded for a fine instead of jail, saying he needed to be by his wife's side as she is heavily pregnant with their first child. He also told the court that he is the main carer for his elderly parents. In another case, a carpenter was fined RM3,000 or seven months' jail for trespassing into a shop in Karamunsing complex. CCTV footage showed Yap unlocking the door and entering the shop before leaving about five minutes later. The next day, at 5.50pm, police arrested Yap and also seized the key from him. Yap admitted it was the shop key, which he had kept since his time working for the complainant. Further investigation confirmed that Yap had unlawfully entered the shop using the key without the complainant's knowledge or consent. Inspector Yusdi Basri prosecuted. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
