Uber is piloting a new option for its US app that will allow female passengers to request women drivers, coming after the company has long grappled with preventing sexual assault on its platform.
The feature, called Women Preferences, will launch in a pilot stage in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Detroit in the next few weeks, Uber said in a blog post on Wednesday. It marks the first time the popular ride share app is bringing this option to its service in the United States after launching it in 40 other countries.
Uber joins Lyft and other taxi hailing apps, like HERide and Just Her Rideshare, that connect female passengers with women drivers.
'Across the US, women riders and drivers have told us they want the option to be matched with other women on trips,' Camiel Irving, vice president of operations in the US and Canada, said in a press release.
Women riders in cities where the feature is available will see a new option called Women Drivers. They'll also be able to pre-book rides with women drivers and set a preference in the app to be matched with a female driver.
The feature works both ways; women drivers will be able to request female passengers too with a new 'Women Rider Preference' option in the settings menu. Riders and drivers will still be able to connect more broadly with non-female passengers and drivers if they wish, even with these preferences set.
The company conducted testing and collected feedback from other markets like Germany and France to make sure the feature would work reliably considering most Uber drivers are men, Irving wrote in Uber's blog post.
Sexual assault has been a problem for Uber for years; nearly 6,000 sexual assault reports were made from 2017-2018, according to Uber's safety report. That number has dropped significantly to 2,717 by 2022, the report says, although five passengers sued Uber in 2022 over sexual assault incidents that occurred between August 2021 and February 2022.
The California Public Utilities Commission fined Uber $59 million in 2020 for not handing over sexual assault data, but that fine was slashed to $150,000 after the company cut a deal requiring it to provide anonymized data on sexual assault incidents.
Uber has launched other features to promote safety in recent years, such as a hub in the app for managing safety preferences.

Canadian dollar steadies as trade data meets expectations

By Fergal Smith (Reuters) -The Canadian dollar was barely changed against its U.S. counterpart on Tuesday as oil prices fell and data showed a widening of the Canadian trade deficit that was close to expectations. The loonie was trading nearly unchanged at 1.3775 per U.S. dollar, or 72.60 U.S. cents, after moving in a range of 1.3764 to 1.3810. Canada's merchandise trade deficit widened in June to C$5.9 billion ($4.24 billion) as imports grew faster than exports due to a one-time high-value oil equipment import. Analysts had predicted the deficit would increase to C$6.3 billion from a downwardly revised C$5.5 billion in May. "Despite the usual volatility, Canada's trade figures came in line with expectations for June," Shelly Kaushik, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, said in a note. "While trade flows have recovered a touch from the spring, normalization is unlikely until the Canada-U.S. relationship stabilizes." The U.S. has increased tariffs on Canadian goods to 35% from 25%, but products covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement are exempt from duties. About 90% of Canadian exports to the U.S. in May were exempt under that trade deal. The price of oil, one of Canada's major exports, fell 1.4% to $65.35 a barrel on rising OPEC+ supply and worries of weaker global demand, while the U.S. dollar steadied against a basket of major currencies. Canada's employment report for July, due on Friday, could offer further clues on the state of the domestic economy. A Reuters poll of economists expects a gain of 13,500 jobs. The Canadian 10-year yield was little changed at 3.382% after earlier touching its lowest level since July 7 at 3.360%. Streaming pioneer Roku, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROKU) introduced Howdy on Tuesday, a new subscription video-on-demand service priced at just $2.99 per month. The addition underscores Roku's strategy to diversify revenue by expanding both third-party and first-party subscription offerings. The ad-free platform goes live nationwide in the U.S. on Tuesday, aiming to fill a gap for viewers seeking uninterrupted, high-quality reporting its second-quarter results on July 31, the firm said, 'We see a significant opportunity to serve digital-first, performance advertisers, and capture incremental ad dollars beyond traditional TV in digital budgets.' Howdy will be accessible on Roku devices beginning August 5, with a rollout to mobile and additional platforms planned soon. Lionsgate's Jim Packer applauded Roku's scale, reaching over 125 million U.S. viewers daily, as ideal for monetizing a broader audience. FilmRise parent Radial Entertainment's Johnny Holden added that Howdy opens new avenues to maximize content value and audience reach. McKesson Corporation (MCK): A Bull Case Theory

We came across a bullish thesis on McKesson Corporation on The Buyside Guy's Substack. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on MCK. McKesson Corporation's share was trading at $710.94 as of August 4th. MCK's trailing and forward P/E were 27.17 and 18.69, respectively according to Yahoo Finance. A successful pharmacist in front of shelves of drugs in a community-based oncology pharmacy. McKesson (MCK) is one of the largest pharmaceutical distributors in the U.S., moving nearly a third of all prescription drugs across North America and controlling 38.1% of the U.S. distribution market alongside AmerisourceBergen and Cardinal Health. Acting as the infrastructure layer of the healthcare system, McKesson provides logistics, inventory management, credit risk handling, and compliance, operating on razor-thin margins that make the business highly defensible and nearly impossible for new entrants. Even retail giants like CVS and Walgreens depend on its efficiency, with most pharmacy orders fulfilled within 24 hours. Its moat lies in compliance—McKesson must meet stringent DEA and DSCSA requirements, tracking every pill through the supply chain, which creates significant barriers to entry and customer stickiness. The business model is stable: branded drugs generate fixed fees per unit, insulating earnings from price swings, while generics—though lower revenue—deliver higher margins and account for about 29% of operating profit. Customer concentration is notable, with CVS and Walmart together contributing roughly 14% of operating income. While McKesson trades defensively during market volatility, short-term earnings misses can pressure the stock. A key catalyst is the planned spin-off of its Medical-Surgical segment, which has higher margins (8–10%) but adds volatility; separation could unlock valuation clarity and upside. Currently, McKesson trades at 17.8x FY'26 EPS, above its 10-year average of ~14.5x, reflecting strong fundamentals like a 17% five-year EPS CAGR and 7% buyback CAGR. Though not cheap today, a pullback to $550–$600 could offer an attractive entry point into this essential, scale-driven business. Previously, we covered a bullish thesis on Quipt Home Medical Corp. (QIPT) by Inflexio Research in March 2025, which highlighted its recurring revenue base, activist involvement, and buyout potential. The stock has appreciated about 4.78% since then as recovery signs emerged. The thesis still stands with strategic catalysts intact. The Buyside Guy shares a similar view on defensiveness but emphasizes McKesson's scale, compliance moat, and Med-Surg spin-off catalyst. McKesson Corporation is not on our list of the 30 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 70 hedge fund portfolios held MCK at the end of the first quarter which was 78 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of MCK as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
