M.G.R.'s aide Mahalingam dies at 73
K. Mahalingam, an aide of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and founder of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) M.G. Ramachandran, died on Friday (June 27, 2025) night at a private hospital in Chennai after a brief illness. He was 73, and is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
A native of Manamadurai in Sivaganga district, Mr. Mahalingam was the son of M.S. Gundu Karuppiah, a member of the Tamil theatre troupe led by T.K. Shanmugam. He became M.G.R.'s aide in 1972 and continued in the position till the latter's death in December 1987.
In 2019, Mr. Mahalingam authored a Tamil publication recounting his relationship with the former Chief Minister and key political events during the 15-year period when he served as his aide.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, ADMK Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee coordinator O. Panneerselvam, and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran condoled the death of Mr. Mahalingam.

The death of a 27-year-old temple security guard following police questioning in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district has triggered a political row, with opposition leaders demanding a judicial inquiry, the arrest of police personnel, and the resignation of Chief Minister M K Stalin. B Ajith Kumar, who worked as a temporary guard at the Madapuram Badrakaliamman Temple near Tiruppuvanam, was picked up on Saturday by a special police team investigating a complaint of gold jewellery theft. The complaint had been filed by a devotee from Madurai, who alleged that 9.5 sovereigns of gold kept in her car went missing during her visit to the temple. Ajith, who briefly had access to the car key since he was helping her with parking, was questioned and released, but later detained again for further questioning. During the second round of questioning, Ajith reportedly complained of discomfort. Police took him to a hospital, where he was declared 'brought dead'. His family has alleged that he was tortured in custody. His younger brother, B Naveenkumar, claimed both of them were tied up and beaten during transport in a police vehicle. The incident prompted the immediate suspension of six police personnel attached to the Manamadurai sub-division. Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat announced the suspensions on Sunday and promised a fair inquiry. Meanwhile, R Venkadesh Prasanth, the District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate of Tiruppuvanam, has begun an inquest into the death. Police officials said a case has been registered under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. As news of the death spread, residents of Madapuram, along with AIADMK workers led by local MLA Senthilnathan, staged a road blockade demanding justice and that Ajith's family be allowed to travel in a government vehicle to retrieve the body. Tensions subsided only after district officials arranged for government transportation and assured compensation. AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami demanded a judicial magistrate-led probe and compensation for Ajith's family. 'Even if police suspect someone of a crime, they must follow due legal process. Custodial torture is unacceptable,' he said in a statement, accusing the DMK government of failing to rein in police excesses. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran echoed similar concerns, alleging that Ajith was 'beaten over two days by seven policemen'. He referred to an earlier incident in which women, including a pregnant complainant, were allegedly assaulted at a police station. 'This points to a disturbing pattern of police brutality. The DMK government has failed to make police stations safe for the poor and the marginalised,' he said. PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss took direct aim at Chief Minister Stalin, citing 28 alleged custodial deaths in the past four years under the DMK regime. 'As opposition leader, Stalin had demanded the resignation of then-CM Palaniswami during the Sathankulam custodial deaths. If he has a conscience, he should now step down himself,' he said. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded the arrest of all officers involved, calling the death a 'custodial murder'. NTK leader Seeman said suspensions were insufficient and demanded that a murder case be registered. DMDK's Premalatha Vijayakant called for systemic reforms to prevent further such deaths.

Tamil Nadu Guard Dies Allegedly In Police Custody, Opposition Demands Probe
Chennai: A 28-year-old security guard of a temple in Sivaganga district allegedly died when he was being questioned by police in connection with a theft case, and the main opposition AIADMK has demanded a comprehensive probe and legal action against those responsible for his death. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami strongly condemned what he called "the doll chief minister" and alleged Mr Stalin could not even administer the police department that is under his direct control. In order to facilitate a comprehensive investigation, to bring out the whole truth, a committee headed by the district judge should be set up, and action must be taken against those responsible. Also, due compensation must be extended to the kin of the deceased, Mr Palaniswami said in a statement. CPI(M), an ally of the ruling DMK, demanded the dismissal of police personnel responsible and strongly condemned the death. A murder case must be registered, and the policemen who perpetrated the crime must be brought to book. The Marxist party also demanded a government job for a family member of the deceased and due compensation. Tamil Nadu BJP alleged that the DMK government has been transforming Tamil Nadu into "the motherland of lockup deaths," and that 24 custodial deaths have happened under the DMK regime. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary TTV Dhinakaran hit out at Chief Minister Stalin, alleging he had shed "fake tears" over custodial deaths after watching films on that subject. Now, what answer is he going to give for police violence under his rule against the common people, Dhinakaran asked. PMK top leader Anbumani Ramadoss alleged 28 custodial deaths in the past 4 years during the DMK regime and said there could be no worse violation of human rights. Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi chief Panruti T Velmurugan, an ally of the ruling DMK, said a murder case should be registered against the police personnel responsible for it, and action must be taken to legally secure appropriate punishment for them. Allegedly, 28-year-old Ajith Kumar, who worked as a security guard in a temple in Sivaganga district, died while he was in custody at the Tirubuvanam police station on June 28. He was taken to the police station as part of a probe over the disappearance of gold and some cash from inside the car of a devotee. Reportedly, the devotee had requested Ajith to park the vehicle, and since he did not know driving, he had requested another person to park the vehicle. Six police personnel have been suspended in this connection. According to the CPI(M), Ajith worked as a temporary guard.

DMK Criticises Centre State's finance minister Thangam Thennarasu who also holds the archaeology portfolio, said that the UK-based university has reconstructed facial features of ancient people who lived around 2,500 years ago highlighting the antiquity of Tamil culture and civilization to the world. The images were generated last year after the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) sent them digital files related to skull samples from Kondagai He further accused the BJP-led government of 'suppressing Tamil heritage" and said that the findings have defeated the Union government's unjust and denials. 'Though the Union BJP government has deceitfully tried to suppress the history and heritage of Tamils, constructive scientific findings and the historical evidence emerging from the Keeladi excavations continue to defeat the Union government's unjust and denials. I urge the Union government to at least now release the Keezhadi research report," Thennarasu said. Further, CM Stalin also took to social media and said, 'The way of life detailed in Sangam literature now stands scientifically validated through the findings at Keeladi." The controversy intensified after Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on June 10 said the reports submitted to the ASI not technically well supported. Further scientific studies are required to validate the findings, he said. Later, the ASI asked the archaeological officer to revise original Keeladi report to which officer refused, citing accurate dating of artefacts from 8th century BCE to 3rd century CE. CM Stalin also slammed the Centre for not validating the archaeological report. Later Ramakrishna was transferred. DMK MP P Wilson condemned the transfer of the archaeologist from his present position. Taking to X, he wrote that no one can suppress the truth. 'You cannot bury history with propaganda. You cannot purchase scientific truths with money or power."
