This Hidden Gem Is Called Georgia's 'Little Amazon' With 120+ Endangered Species—and It's Just 1.5 Hours From Savannah

The river rolled beneath us as sheets of rain lashed down. I sat in the stern of our canoe with my friend Madeline in the bow. My dad, Joel, followed in his long red sea kayak. We sped past drooping branches that bobbed as the current tried to tug them downstream.
I couldn't help but laugh. I had traveled to Georgia to see how wild the Altamaha River still was. Now, on day four of our six-day source-to-sea paddle, the river was showing its might.
About an hour and a half south of Savannah, paddlers can find a forgotten gem. Nicknamed Georgia's "Little Amazon," the 137-mile Altamaha River meanders through hardwood forests and old-growth cypress swamps, past river-cut cliffs, and along cordgrass marshlands before emptying into the Atlantic. Undammed, crossed by roads just five times, and home to more than 120 endangered species, The Nature Conservancy calls this river one of the 75 'Last Great Places' in the world. The best way to enjoy the Altamaha is by boat. In 2010, the Georgia River Network launched the Altamaha River Canoe Trail. Today, this trail stretches the length of the river and offers 29 access points.
We started our trip with a night at a primitive campsite at Towns Bluff Park. A guide at Three Rivers Outdoors helped us shuttle our car down to the takeout in Darien before seeing us on our way at the put-in at Hinson's Landing. I'd spent a year researching the Altamaha, reading tales of winding, difficult-to-navigate tributaries, dense swamplands, strong currents and tides, big catfish, and enormous alligators.
The trip didn't disappoint. On our first night, we set up camp on a wide beach at one of the river's many dispersed camping areas. I picked dewberries while Madeline fished the shoreline, pulling a large redbreast sunfish and smallmouth bass from the water.
For dinner, we feasted on fried fish, pasta, and berries. We lounged on the soft sand, watching the sun sink as snow-white egrets strolled through the shallow waters, their long strides offering flashes of their bright yellow feet. A snowy Egret along the river bank.

During the next few days, we fell into a pattern. We rose early and paddled hard, watching solitary sandpipers run along the misty shores as ospreys eyed us from their nests atop dead trees.
We spent our lunches relaxing on the Altamaha's sandbars, casting lines and darting into the water for a quick swim, watchful for the outline of an alligator moving through the depths.
In the afternoons, silvery mullet leapt out of the dark water next to our boats. On one memorable occasion, one bounced off my dad's kayak deck with a loud thump. A Barred Owl seen in the trees surrounding the river.

Each night, we listened to barred owls echoing their familiar song, 'who, who, who cooks for you,' as they soared between Spanish moss-covered branches.
Our largest alligator sighting came on the afternoon of our third day. 'Madeline, Madeline, Madeline!' I nervously chanted as what I had taken to be a log began charging down the bank beside us. It broke through the tangled willows and plunged into the water, its massive form making waves that lapped against the canoe. Madeline grinned back at me. 'What did you expect me to do?' she said.
We spent our last night on the river at Altamaha Regional Park. After another round of torrential thunderstorms, a hot shower and a cup of coffee never felt so good.
The next morning found us in the park's store, which hosts a tasty diner tucked into the back corner behind shelves of fishing tackle and camo shirts. Over a breakfast of waffles with local sorghum syrup, fried eggs, crisp hash browns, grits, and sausage, local anglers told us we had to check out Rifle Cut.
This narrow, mile-long canal offers relief from the currents and tides at the mouth of the river. It's adorned with bright wildflowers, tiny scuttling crabs, and shorebirds. Though beautiful, it has a dark history. The canal was hand-dug by enslaved people in the 1820s to shorten the route to the timber mill in Darien.
After coasting through the cut, the river pulled us back out into a ferocious mix of wind, current, and tide as we entered Darien.
We'd caught our first glimpse of another group of paddlers on the river before making the last bend. Now, straight ahead of us, they were in trouble. Caught in the strange mix of current and tide, they had flipped their canoe. Without life jackets on, they clung to the capsized canoe, and we hurried to help.
My dad swooped in to tow one on the back of his kayak. With the help of another kayaker, we were able to get the other man and their canoe to a nearby muddy bank opposite and just upstream of the takeout.
The trip ended with Madeline and me in separate boats. I took one man in their canoe, while Madeline and my dad coaxed a nervous, exhausted man into the bow of ours. He perched on the balls of his feet and clung to the gunwales, making the gear-laden canoe shudder in the swirling water. Somehow, Madeline made it across with him.
The Altamaha was an adventure to the very end.

A fall or winter getaway just got cheaper. Starting Oct. 7, low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is expanding its network with 15 different routes, according to the airline. Best of all, Frontier is celebrating with introductory fares as low as $29. 'With new destinations in Texas and Virginia, our return to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and new routes between several of our top cities, now is a better time than ever for consumers to give Frontier a try and experience the comfort, convenience and savings we are known for," Frontier Airlines Vice President of Network and Operations Design Josh Flyr said in a statement, adding "consumers will have even more affordable flight options to choose from as they plan their travel through 2025 and into the new year." For travelers on the East Coast, Frontier will begin a new service connecting New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to both Denver International Airport (DEN) and Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) on Oct. 8. The airline will also begin a new route between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) on Oct. 7. On the West Coast, the airline will begin new service between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and San Antonio International Airport (SAT) on Oct. 10, and between Tucson International Airport (TUS) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Oct. 9. Other new routes include service between Denver and Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP), and service from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Omaha's Eppley Airfield (OMA) and Virginia's Richmond International Airport (RIC). Travelers looking to explore one of the top cities in the United States are in luck since Frontier will begin new service twice per week from Dallas to Charleston on Oct. 9. The South Carolina city was recently ranked as a favorite in the 2025 World's Best Awards by Travel + Leisure readers. To take advantage of Frontier's $29 introductory fares, travelers must book by 11:59 p.m. ET on July 28 and travel on select days of the week between Oct. 7 and Dec. 18. The discounted travel is not valid during blackout dates from Nov. 21 to 26, Nov. 28 to 30, or Dec. 1 to 2, according to the airline. Frontier is not alone in its expansion efforts. From coast to coast, major carriers have been on the move. Fellow low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines, for example, recently announced a new flight to Key West, FL, from Fort Lauderdale, and American Airlines is expanding in time for the winter holiday season with new routes planned throughout Mexico and the Caribbean.

U.S. entry requirements vary by country and can be confusing. We break it down for you. The two most important things to remember when bringing international attendees into the U.S. for an event are: 1. to start early and 2. to carefully explain the process to avoid any confusion. B-1/B-2 Visas A B-1/B-2 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows foreign nationals to travel to the United States temporarily for business (B-1), tourism (B-2), or a mix of both (B-1/B-2). Many meeting attendees coming from afar choose to spend some time traveling on their own before or after the meeting, so the B-1/B-2 visa is common, while attendees who are planning only to attend the meeting would choose a B-1 visa. This can be confusing because a B-2 visa is adequate for those attending a conference, but only if it is related to a personal interest, such as events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations, or enrollment in a short recreational course of study that's not for credit toward a degree. More information is available on the U.S. Department of State website. The visa process involves submitting documents that show the purpose of the trip and financial proof that the attendee can return to his or her home country. Visa applications and step-by-step instructions are available on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website. Attendees will need to fill out the online visa application, Form DS-160, which requires uploading a photo, then print the application form confirmation page to bring to the interview. An in-person interview is the next step required for visa applicants; attendees should generally schedule an appointment for their visa interviews at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where they live. Appointment wait times are based on workload and staffing and can vary. A list of wait times by country can be found on the U.S. Department of State website. The cost for a visa is $185, and B visas are typically valid for up to 10 years from the issue date. Letter of Invitation Planners are required to create a letter of invitation for international attendees to bring with them to their visa appointment as proof that they have been invited to the conference. It's important that the letter includes: conference details — name, date, and location organizer information — name, affiliation, and contact details invited participant information — name, affiliation, and contact details. One way to learn more about invitation letters is to research those written by other organizations for their international conferences, which are often available right on their websites for attendees to download. Visa Waiver Program The Visa Waiver Programm, administered by the Department of Homeland Security, enables citizens or nationals of 40 countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without first obtaining a visa. Attendees should submit their ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications, which include biographical information and eligibility questions, as soon as they start planning their travel. They must have an e-Passport with an embedded electronic chip to apply for the Visa Waiver Program. It's important to note that the final determination of whether a traveler is allowed into the country is ultimately made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers upon arrival. What is the New Visa Integrity Fee? A new $250 'integrity fee' (adjusted annually for inflation) will start in fiscal year 2026, which begins October 1. The fee will apply to all non-immigrant visa holders, including meeting-goers. People from the more than 40 Visa Waiver Program countries and Canada are not subject to the visa integrity fee. Travelers are eligible for reimbursement after the visa expires, as long as they don't overstay the visa expiration date by more than five days or engage in unauthorized work.
