Billy Joel sets the record straight on whether he's had multiple DUIs
Billy Joel has had a few car accidents, but not for the reason many people have believed. In his HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' the 76-year-old seeks to clear up consistent speculation that he has been arrested multiple times for driving under the influence. (HBO is owned by CNN's parent company.) In 2002, Joel crashed a car in East Hampton, New York and less than a year later, he drove into a tree in Sag Harbor which resulted in him having to be airlifted to the hospital. Two years later he crashed into a house in Long Island. The car accidents have been attributed to road conditions and Joel's depressive mental state, and while he has been in rehab before, the singer maintains that he has never gotten a DUI. 'You know, along with fame comes a lot of gossip, rumors. I didn't like the tabloid kind of press,' he said in the documentary. 'For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating the myth: 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.'' Joel went into rehab at the Betty Ford Center in 2005 after he said he was given an 'ultimatum' by his then-wife, Katie Lee. He discussed it in 2013 with the New York Times Magazine, but at that time he again denied ever having a DUI. 'I went to rehab in '05 because, when I was with Katie, she said, 'You're drinking way too much.' I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. Look at the police records.'

Joel's mum gets in touch in EastEnders as Ross pales in shock over her big news
Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) receives some big news about his ex-partner in EastEnders next week. Alongside son Joel (Max Murray) and partner Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), the trio came to Walford for her uncle Martin's (James Bye) funeral. It soon transpired that they couldn't return to their home in Australia, as Joel had upskirted a pupil in his class, and Ross had paid her family $50,000 in exchange for their silence. He's since enacted havoc on the residents of Albert Square, impregnating Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) and introducing new mate Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to dangerous adult content online. Later, Joel showed Tommy videos made by a disgusting influencer, who degrades women. Joel thought this was an appropriate way to talk about the opposite sex, branding his own mum a 'slapper', talking about how she abandoned him as a child. Fans of the BBC One soap then began to question whether his estranged mum was none other than returnee Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), which was only fuelled further when he told Vicki that she 'ain't his mother', echoing Zoe's words two decades earlier. Unfortunately, judging by upcoming scenes, that theory seems to be dead in the water. Next week, Ross takes Joel and Tommy to work at the timber yard on Turpin Road, hoping it will keep them out of bother during the school holidays. However, he soon becomes concerned for their welfare when he overhears some of the language used by his colleagues. Returning home at the end of the day, he's shocked to receive a call from his ex – Joel's mum – who has revealed she's getting remarried. The incident seems to cause Joel's behaviour to spiral, as he heads over to The Vic to hang out with Tommy and to steal some booze from the barrel store. More Trending The lads are quickly caught in the act, and as Ross and Tommy's adoptive dad Alfie (Shane Richie) rile at them for their behaviour, Joel kicks off and dishes out some disgusting comments to landlady Kat (Jessie Wallace). It seems he's back to square one with his shocking behaviour, with Ross and Vicki at a loose end with how to control him. The situation only worsens when something is discovered on the teen's laptop. Ross, full of anger and confusion, destroys the device. Vicki is gobsmacked when she discovers the reason why it was smashed, and orders her boyfriend to be firm with his son before he makes his next move. View More » Later, in the pub, Joel delivers an apology to Kat and she allows him to hang out with Tommy again. However, as Vicki and Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) discuss parenting and their love lives, Joel becomes infuriated and shows his true colours. Christie Brinkley Says This 1 Factor Doomed Her Relationship With Billy Joel
Christie Brinkley opened up about her rocky marriage to Billy Joel in a new documentary about the iconic musician's life. The model married Joel in 1985, and the two welcomed their only child, Alexa, later that year. Brinkley said that she tried to make her relationship with Joel work, but there was one thing that got in the way. 'I don't think it's a secret that his drinking got pretty bad,' Brinkley said in Part 2 of the musician's new HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes. She said that the singer 'couldn't really remember what he did when he was drinking, and so he didn't really know how he could hurt people.' During a particularly stressful period of financial turmoil and touring for Joel, Brinkley said that 'there was too much unraveling in his life.' She would call bars to find out where Joel was, and would pretend to be sleeping when he would come in some nights, so she could avoid seeing him 'in that condition.' 'Our relationship went from lots of fun and really, totally enjoying each other and everything, to his work consuming him,' the model shared. Brinkley said she didn't know what to do, but she decided she couldn't 'be lonely.' It was just her 'and Alexa in this big old house that was supposed to be so full of life and love and music and laughter and all of that,' Brinkley said as she started to tear up. The model said that 'things were starting to deteriorate' and then one fight sealed the deal. 'One night, we had an argument and I said, 'I really can't take this anymore, and I'm just gonna take Alexa back up to New York and leave,'' she recalled. 'And he said, 'Yeah, fine ― go.'' The two divorced in 1994, and Joel revealed what he took away from the end of their marriage. 'I realized love is not concrete,' the musician said. 'You know, you feel like it is, but there are things eating away at it. And, in the end, it all catches up. And it's hard. And I was so devastated.' Brinkley has spoken about Joel's drinking before in her recently published memoir, Uptown Girl. 'The drinking was bigger than the both of us. Booze was the other woman and it was beginning to seem that he preferred to be with her rather than me,' she said. The 71-year-old told Page Six in April that 'leaving Billy wasn't easy for me to do.' 'He's the father of my firstborn and we spent such great formative years together. And I'll love him forever,' Brinkley shared. 'Things just reached a point where I knew I couldn't live with him.' Ron Galella, Ltd. / Getty Images

Billy Joel insists DUIs 'never happened'
Billy Joel is adamant he's never faced a drink driving charge. The veteran musician, 76, has addressed long-standing rumours about his past in his new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes and he has insisted he's never been prosecuted for a DUI (driving under the influence charge) despite previous reports suggesting he got in trouble with the law after a series of motoring mishaps. He explained: "There's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened. But people keep repeating the myth. 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.' "I never had a DUI. So f*** you. The press can be mean. So having that much attention paid to you is not easy." Joel was involved in a number of car accidents over the years - including a 1999 accident, a 2003 crash when he drove his Mercedes-Benz into a tree in Sag Harbor, New York and another smash in 2004 when he crashed his car into a house in Bayville, New York. However, Joel has since insisted the car accidents had nothing to do with alcohol and were actually linked to the "deep depression" he was suffering at the time. In a 2013 interview with the New York Times, he explained: "{The accidents had] nothing to do with the booze ... I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. "Look at the police records. My mind wasn't right. I wasn't focused. I went into a deep, deep depression after 9/11. 9/11 just knocked the wind out of me, and "I don't know even now if I've recovered from it. "It really, really hurt that man could do that to man. And then there was a break-up with somebody, and it took me a while to get me back on my feet again." In the documentary, Joel also opened up about becoming embroiled in a feud with Sir Elton John after the pop icon encouraged him to go to rehab. Joel explained: "Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab. He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me. "I said wait a minute? Don't you know me better than that? And there was bad blood for a little while. There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time." Billy recalled feeling at "rock bottom" when he read Elton's comments. He said: "I was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean. It was like all the signs were pointing to me: enough. And I wrote this letter to the band. 'I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna stop.'" Elton made the comments to Rolling Stone magazine back in 2011, shortly after they toured together. The singer explained at the time that they had "so many cancelled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism". Elton - who also struggled with addiction in the 70s and 80s - added: "He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they've been light ... I love you Billy, and this is tough love." Billy did actually spend time in rehab in 2005, and he previously acknowledged that addiction created "problems" in his life. The singer stopped drinking altogether in 2021.
